@@rarleyposting5546Many people think the goal horn came off the MV Tacoma, due to early plans that never came true. Early on before the arena was finished, the sound of the Kraken’s goal horn was supposed to be a recording off the ferry MV Tacoma. As a result, most people believe that the horn installed in the arena is from the Tacoma. However, the team saw an opportunity to get an actual horn off a retired ferry. When MV Hyak was pulled from service in 2017, most of the components such as the radars, horns, and other equipment were pulled from the boat for reuse. Because of this, the horn off the Hyak ended up in the hands of the Kraken. It is confirmed in multiple places (including the Wikipedia page for the Hyak, I think) that the Hyak is, indeed, the boat that the Kraken’s goal horn came from. The Tacoma retains its original horns: in the current state of emergency of the ferry system, there is absolutely no way they would take a boat (especially one as large as the Tacoma) out of service to replace the horn, just to give one to a sports team. Also, more evidence that the Kraken’s horn is NOT from the Tacoma: listen to the Tacoma’s horns, then listen to the Hyak. They’re very obviously playing two notes at once. The Hyak’s horn is an old-school traditional single tone fog horn, which is what the Kraken’s horn sounds like.
It’s actually the M.V. Hyak’s horn that was installed in the arena for the Kraken’s horn after all, due to the boat being retired. It sounds most like the no.1 end horn in these recordings to me, the way it sort of doesn’t sound right away. Apparently, they’re running it off of an air compressor reused from the arena’s construction.
I live in Seattle and can often hear these ferry horns off in the distance. My favorite horn sounds are most definitely the Walla Walla, Wenatchee, and the Olympic class as a whole. However, my least favorite, if it isn’t the Kwa-Di Tabil class, is probably the #2 end of the MV Puyallup and #1 end of the Tacoma. They just sound broken to me. (The other ends of those are just as good as the Wenatchee, however.) I neither love nor hate the Spokane or any of the single tone horns on the Evergreens, Issaquahs, and Supers, though I tend to like the deep tone on some of them. I think Hyak was the perfect choice for Kraken’s goal horn.

Random, but as a kid, I preferred the ferries that had 2 smokestacks instead of just one, like the Elwha or Hyak...just seemed more "even" or balanced to my kids mind, LOL! ⛴⛴❤❤😂🤣
What type of horns are installed on the Jumbo II and Olympic Class ferries? Also, how far away from the ship does the ear slitting loudness carry? How far away from the ship do you have to be before the sound no longer hurts your ears?
@@patrickbrooks3794Yeah, since they Retired the M.V. Hyak, they ended up using an actual horn from the boat for the Kraken’s goal horn. So, it is confirmed the Hyak’s horn in the rafters at the arena. I actually found it’s exact location. It’s on a platform atop the steel rafters, between the center (where the large speaker stack is hung) and the sky bridge thing above the west sections. The silhouette of the horn can be seen. It’s pointed at the ceiling, which I confirmed with my own eyes, and it’s also run at a lower pressure (allegedly from an air compressor used in construction of the arena). Both of these things are to tame the power of the horn and avoid hearing damage. It’s not overly loud, or startlingly so, in the venue. It’s just a deep powerful noise, which I prefer over a harsh sound.
WSF what a joke - three years and still a horrid mess. I can give a squirrel's nut about the damn ferry horns I wish they learned to show up and leave on time. Well we're getting rid of Jay Inslee so that should get the process of cleaning up Washington moving forward!! And hopefully the entire staff that runs these ferrys gets fired and replaced with competent people.
