• Wasp/Yellowjacket Kill...
In the beginning the wasps flew directly to the wire without hesitation. Now there seems to be a change in the behaviour in the remaining population. Instead of flying directly into the wire, they are now more hesitant. Many of them seem to be attempting to avoid the wire. How can this change in behaviour in the remaining population be explained? Most likely a wasp can see the wire better than humans can. But how is the association with the wire and danger established?

Ridanos Protectors We don't even have to go to behavior such as flying behavior or that they are cavity dwellers my friend. We can simply compare the striped body and coloration of the remains at the end of the video. Wasps don't look like that at all. After two decades of working with honey bees it seems that the only challenging insect of prey to mention I've found is the Japanese hornet.
@BengalsOfRidanos

@@danceswithbeesllc6717 It was you who recommended I should do “some research on honey bee behaviour”. Now you write about “the striped body and coloration”. Both honey bees and these wasps “Dolichovespula norwegica” have yellow stripes. After two decades of working with honey bees astounded that you do not know the difference! Nice video. I'm impressed. No chemicals at all, efficient, effective, incredibly simple setup. Pure genius. As far as why they stopped flying into the wire is probably due to the fact that the hive segments society into workers, nurses, soldiers, etc. The soldiers detect the noise, and perhaps the wire, and swarm it to protect the hive. They view it as an invading creature, so they attack it despite the fruitlessness of the exercise. By the next day, the majority of the soldiers are splattered on the soffit or swimming in the "dead pool" below, so there's just not enough left to continue to "feed the machine", and the other's are workers or members of other groups who have no interest in the invader (as they expect soldiers to handle that), so they more or less avoid it as they do sense it's dangerous, they didn't get drafted into the army, so they simply avoid it. So while it's certainly effective to a point, the remaining wasps are going to avoid it, and additional extermination is going to be needed to completely wipe out the hive. Over time, the soldier population will rebound (and quickly I'd fear).

The sound of them getting smacked is pretty cool though. LOL And yes I was mesmerized by the fire cat in the corner. I also agree on "where are the slow mow guys ". Slow mow on this world be stellar. And to close this off the reason they stopped going toward the (smacker) is because they no longer saw it as a threat. A bee/hornet will only attack if they see something as a threat. They learned to live with it, avoid it. Notice at first they were flying directly at it. I bet if you move it to a different location they might go at it again.

Not all of the member of a hive do the same thing. They have jobs. Some go seek food, others defend the nest. Some take care of the baby, others build the nest. The change in the behavior is most likelly because you killed most of one type: those who go seek food. The remaining mostly stay inside. Due to the carnage, the defenders went out to investigate and try to find the attacker. All they found was guts. This is why they changed.

According to you, in a couple of years the wasps will be able to avoid even the bullets?

Maybe he killed off the "scouts" and what you see are the "guards". They look alike, but are genetically dispositioned to handle a different task. So it's not that they have learned a different behavior. Staying behind is just what they do.

It's also possible that they don't need to fly, because a new food source is within crawling distance. (See how they're sucking up the gut juice of their dead? Nature is gross.)

They sure left a mess on the house. Great idea. You dont have anything against wasps but I do. They suck and can make a day get real bad just doing yard work. Thanks. And the trolls saying those are bees. Must not have ever seen wasps.

Perhaps just one minor modification, sir: two or three equidistant wires instead of just the one. Either way, your contraption is ingenious.

i would guess the wasps can hear the machine, as opposed to being able to see it. And experiment - shut the machine off for a day or so, then restart - see if they've forgotten.

I'm blown away by the amount of pride and arrogance provided by some so-called bee/wasp/hornet gurus! Even in the low quality 480p resolution you can clearly see the long pointy narrow wings these have that are distinctly found on most wasps. There maybe even some smaller hornets that have these types of wings, but they are clearly far from honeybees or any type of bee! Just by the sound of the wire striking the thorax on some, you can surmise that they are robust and dense. Honeybees being small would make a much different sound when hit with a wire like this. We used to whack the male cicada killers (similar size to young bald-face hornets) swarming in our yard guarding the nest (until the female returned from hunting) with tennis racquets because they were chasing the little kids. They make a solid thumping noise when struck and a bee would probably sound higher pitched due to the softer thorax! I just went in and typed "yellow-jacket" and hundreds of pictures appeared in front of me that look like a wasp very clearly and it irks me that many have mentioned that they are honeybees due to the coloring on the thorax of yellow and black! I have no idea how our species has made it as far as we have when so many constantly disagree with each other on the simplest of subjects!

I can’t believe I spent 8 minutes watching this. Like waiting for water to boil. I’m officially going on a RU-vid timeout.
