Waste Vegetable Oil (WVO) Diesel Conversion - How to and how it works!

This week’s video is all about waste vegetable oil (WVO) or, more accurately, how to install a duel fuel system that will allow a diesel engine to burn french-fry grease! About 7 years ago I installed an alternative fuel system in my 5.9 cummins and since that time I’ve saved thousands of dollars not having to buy diesel. I’ve run this truck in sub zero temps with no problems at all.
We’re going to walk through the fuel system and describe how it works. There’s no need to produce biodiesel. With this system you simply burn straight veg oil. The system has a lot of plumbing and can get a little confusing but it’s simple in the way it works.
We use the hot coolant to heat and thin the veg oil before it goes into the diesel injector pump. This is where all the plumbing comes in. I’ll show how to build a counter current heat exchange hose and an aluminum coil to heat the WVO filter.
As you can probably tell I've got a serious aversion to debt! Burning waste vegetable oil I can get for free is just one way we save money. We're also doing a major remodel of our farm house using salvaged lumber and rough cut timber we milled on our little homestead. Subscribe to follow along!
Don't forget to subscribe to the channel. We're uploading a new video each week that features one of the following topics: archery, bowhunting, bow building, survival skills, bushcraft, self reliance, primitive skills, primitive bows, hunting, camping, fishing, and a lot more!
Big thanks to our partners who help support these videos!

This build is absolutely incredible. The fact that you could get the parts for $500 and instead of using electric solenoids etc you just did it with regular valves is so simple and sensible. Bulletproof and saving a dime. If only more people thought this way. Do with less. Best of luck from your neighbor in Montana!

I know I’m a bit late but I would like to endorse this video. There ARE slightly easier ways to do this but everything this guy says is basically valid and correct. I’ve Been doing this for 12 years at around 40-50,000 a year with ZERO problems. Diesel in Australia averages at around $1.50 a litre. You do the math(s). 1.If you store clean veg oil, try to store it in plastic. 2. Don’t use it just for short runs around town.
@danylman7
@danylman7 4 года назад
Please resume the easier ways you name to do this...thanks
@todaywefly4370
@todaywefly4370 4 года назад
@@danylman7 I use electric changeover valves on my trucks. I loop the fuel returns for both diesel and oil back to the inlet side of the filters(this keeps the oil filter warm with the returning oil and saves the diesel tank from being contaminated with oil at the changeover lag). I clean a thousand litres at a time and the 2-3 months it takes to burn that oil gives the oil I have collected time to settle out and saves my plant filters from being blocked too quickly, it also settles out most of the water. I actually have two stages of settling which takes 4-6 months for the oil, once collected, to get to the point of being filtered. I only have to change my vehicle filters at time of oil changes as a precaution, they never block as my fuel is clean. Warning! Cutting corners on oil cleaning will end in tears. Be diligent.
@danylman7
@danylman7 4 года назад
@@todaywefly4370 thanks, so you made 40-50k km a year X 12 years on biodiesel?.... You have any video footage of the process you describe for loop filters, etc?
@todaywefly4370
@todaywefly4370 4 года назад
@@danylman7 Sorry no video. I probably should because I think most of the videos on utube are bogus or are new plants that the posters are excited about making and post too early because almost all of them would result in a damaged engine and the rest would be so much work or so expensive they would stop doing it. Looping the returning fuels back to the inlet side of their respective filters is a simple enough process if you are mechanically minded. If you’re not, or you aren’t patient then stop now. There are huge pitfalls if you don’t know what you’re doing and diesel injection systems are expensive to repair if you can’t do it yourself. Also this is not suitable for electronic common rail diesels. Good luck. And no I won’t be doing a video, I’m a mechanic but I am old and have no patience for that.

Watched this video about 40 times over a month. Takes a while to get my head around this stuff. I made a similar heat exchanger instead and went with a 1-inch steel pipe instead of a rubber hose and 1/2-inch copper through it and used that as a Heat Exchange just near the Injection Pump. I didn't get as far as doing a "mobility moment" but i think might have spent a record amount of time in the hardware store peacing together fittings. And back again about 30 times. Thank you for explaining the system well.

That's a great idea. The problem is, here in Europe that would get you fined: food products are taxed way lower since they are first necessity stuff, if you use them as car fuel you are "evading" taxes, and you may have to pay quite a bit of money for that.

By all that is Holy, THIS IS GREAT! How could I not know about this delightfully affordable answer to the much touted ( to me, anyway ) electric option?!? Our "bad crowd" acquired a 2006 flex fuel Silverado and, ironically enough, we moved to to Oregon later and found that there is no Ethanol AT ALL for retail sale in the state. We actually lost brownie points by not flexing our fuel properly! Thanks for the excellent tutorial, I'll make sure to share this video with the guy who makes this magic happen to the sweet little red 1980-ish German Coupe I have both my eyes on. Cheers, Dudes! You can look into AN fittings like a bulkhead for in a tank etc. Drill hole insert the bulkhead fitting and attach desired AN fitting as needed on each side. In the tank heater one can just use a flare nut and flare the line then bolts right up. On outside there's any number of fittings available to adapt to pipe threads, 90's or hose barbs etc I believe 1/2" would be AN 10

Rudolph diesel is probably smiling from heaven! Lol. This is the way diesels should be fueled. Not with petroleum. His intention was for the end user to grow vegetables, make oil out of them, and use that oil as fuel. Unfortunately common rail, and high pressure systems has made this almost impossible with newer diesels, nevermind the def crap
@BGWenterprises
@BGWenterprises 3 года назад
My friend came up with heating the oil to about 230F before the centrifuge, and adding a light vacuum to the centrifuge chamber. Takes a lot of the water out that just sitting static dosen't get out. Passes the hot frying pan test for water with only one pass through it.

Thanks for the video. Awesome truck and project! I think I understand everything except for the injector cooling and return. How do you keep from contaminating the diesel tank with the change-over from veg to diesel? Especially since the injector return feeds back to the diesel tank. Would there not be some latent veggie oil in the system that would get pumped back to the diesel tank? Also, with the veggie oil being heated, are the injectors able to stay cool enough? Seems like they would run hot since the veggie oil is heated. Last question: what degree thermostat do you use? Thanks again for the great video. I really hope to do this to my 93 W250 1st gen!

I was on one of the first few run-in trips a few days ago Australia on 100% veg running really good, newly rebuilt engine and new VE Injector Pump 1HZ, I wondered why it broke down on side of the road. Just ran 130 kays on a full veg tank ( this is my first long drive) all very good and a full tank of veg with 20 ltr topping it up after the drive, the next day after 10 kays broke down on the highway would only then run if switched to diesel. After sitting roadside eventually deciding that it might be a blocked veg filter I got under and changed it to brand new but the old seemed still good the veg flowed out through it. Then tried to suck the veg up to fill the new filter, none nothing zero zilch, I tapped the tank and it sounded hollow, what, when how where? It is EMPTY?? the veg tank was empty. Can I conclude that when the dogs jumped up onto the driver's side of the bus the return line ONLY got moved over and all the veg went into the diesel tank while it was running go for 10 kays more and filled chock a block and must have went out onto the road through the tiny air breather hole in the diesel tank top, I could see the overflow diesel down the side bus? I opened the diesel cap and it was so full and pressurized diesel pushed out though it is a mix of diesel/veg. I intend to join the two manual three-way valves to one steel joiner so it can't happen again.

Few questions. I'm lookin into getting another first gen, had one when i was in college but was too broke to maintain it. Damn thing was a ranch truck with prolly 450k on it and everything besides the engine was just wore out First question, how are you getting your veg oil? Are you just cruisin to restaurants and they give it to you, are you payin? Second, is it going straight into your tank or do you fill up a separate tank, take it home and filter it? I've heard of a guy who has his own crank operated pump that has a series of filters in it, if I remember right he was able to suck it all into his tank and it would be clean by the time it got there and ready to go. FIrst gens aint as cheap as they used to be, but I live close to Los Angeles and with the amount of restaurants around I figure I could get away with murder and fill up on the cheap regularly. This is a rad conversion, I like how aesthetically it looks way old school with all the plumbing fittings, super cool man!

Mythbusters only showed -10% Fuel economy loss. Probably a little bit more irl situations.

What’s the tow capacity on something like this? Super cool project though. Dipping my feet into the diesel world with a tdi engine swap on my 4runner

Very cool thanks for the info. Wondering if you’d be interested in converting my RV for me? Also do you recommend having a bio converter on the truck so you could pour Unfiltered oil directly in a holding tank and making your own bio desiel?

I might suggest you have a small shed or something to do the conversion for bio fuel separate from the truck. As far as filtering vegetable oil…I mean I suppose you could do that on board, but I would suggest the same, filter the oil down to 5 micron with plastic (or metal) 55gallon drums, de-watering filter, then put it in the aux tank on the truck. BAM!

So you live in northern Idaho as well? I live near Moscow, on the Washington side. I want to get a Cummins so I can do this too

This might be one of my favorite videos! I’ve got a 1987 Ford diesel that I’ve been wanting to do this to that was my Grandads

I tried a drop or 2 of cooking oil on my hair clippers, yes it got thick. I then used baby oil which is mineral oil.that doesn't get thick. Could someone use mineral oil instead of the veggie oil so it doesn't get thick?

Did you do a video on your WVO filtering system?

How do you prepare the veg oil? Or do you pour it straight into the tank?
@qmyers367
@qmyers367 2 года назад
Let it sit for a couple weeks…..Filter down with filters ending with a 5 micron filter as the last one, de-watering filter after that, then it’s about ready.
