The narrative quest game supported by Garage Museum of Contemporary Art Moscow and produced by Love And Other Outdoor Games was created by Afrah Shafiq. It uses stories from the Russian children’s books that were once so popular in India, to explore how stories are used to influence minds, especially young ones. In a narrative of her own creation, Shafiq has iconic characters meet new ones who are misfits and non-conformists. There’s a tsarina who has forgotten how to laugh; a cat without a tail. From the originals, a half-woman-half-bird named Sirin; and the witch-like Baba Yaga, who famously lives deep in the forest, in a hut that stands on chicken legs. Players can also access original titles, and marvel at intricate Soviet-era art and new illustrations and comic panels by Shafiq. Watch the video for a taste of how the quest unfolds.
