In this video, we're tackling the roof of an abandoned cabin from the 1780s. It's a major and risky job, with plenty of work ahead. Our plan is to strip down the roof and rebuild the walls, making this a critical step in our restoration journey. We invite you to join us on this exciting adventure.

Takes guts to get up on that roof. Looks easy from the ground or on screen but when you are up there it's a different story. My hat's off to you Russ!

Good job getting that side stripped Russ. I agree the entire roof needs addressing. A new ridge beam will definitely help you on the path of a straight roof. Stay safe my friend.

oh yeah , cant wait to take it down and rebuild it the way it should be. thank you

Hi Russ, once you have removed the roof keep in mind that the beams and bearers are also adding strength to the walls. I would leave them in place and re brace any weak spots, then start the pulling process with cable ratchets towards the chimney. On the far oppisite wall were the vertical timbers you installed put a horizontal timber across the top of them about 2Ft down from the top which will distribute the pulling power over a larger area (not on the cabins logs walls). This is just another opinion meant to help.

Hi there! Thanks for the helpful tips! I’ll definitely keep in mind the strength the beams and bearers add to the walls. Your suggestion about the horizontal timber and distributing the pulling power makes a lot of sense. I appreciate the advice and will consider it as we move forward. Thanks for watching and for your support!

In Alberta Drumheller Canada yesterday, we reached 100.4 Fahrenheit. I thought I was going to melt. One good thing here is our weather is very dry air. We are very land locked here. If I had the humidity you have omg I wouldn't know what to do. Stay cool. Don't work too hard in the heat of the day.❤

Wow, 100.4°F in Alberta! That’s intense. Dry heat can be tough, but you're right, the humidity adds a whole new challenge. We're doing our best to stay cool and pace ourselves during the hottest parts of the day. Thanks for the advice and support! Stay cool up there, too!

When you found the jar with the label reading Mt. Olive Pickles. Well that pickle plant is in Mt. Olive North Carolina. Mt. Olive is approximately 10 miles from my location in Goldsboro, NC. Mt. Olive sells pickles all over the world.

Russ, You made us all nervous on the roof!!. Your intense background music didn't help either!. I am 62 years old and I have walked on my roof ( two story home ) to do some light repairs and I was scared shitless. You have the courage of Hercules! Be safe my friend.

Thanks for the concern! I might have to switch the intense background music to some smooth jazz next time lol Kudos to you for tackling roof repairs on a two-story home-sounds like you’ve got the courage of Hercules too! Stay safe, and thanks for watching!

Take it down to the foundation and start over kinda like a old truck rebuild from the frame up for a good rebuild .
@thezaytsevs

I was thinking, since the chimney is in bad shape. It might be easier to move the cabin onto the foundation and rebuild the walls with chimney out the way. A safer chimney can be built after.

Just my opinion. Your black dog that goes by the pine or evergreen tree. She acts like a cat does with catnip, so I'm wondering if that's why she walks so slow by the tree. Just a thought. Love your videos, will watch. May God Richly Bless your family with HIS LOVE and keeps you all safe too.

I have always lived in the South. Humidity has been a part of it! Tell us the difference in your native Russian weather. What part of that huge country are y'all from? Great video. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for your comment! Yes, the humidity here is definitely something to get used to. In Russia, we're from the northern part where the weather is quite different-much colder and less humid. The summers are short but beautiful. I'm glad you enjoyed the video! We'll keep working hard.

Russ once you remove the roof you will have the 4 unstable side hanging by 4x4s?? Really think this is agood idea? Very unsafe for you on top and the construction?
