After a slow lifting process that lasted nearly three hours, the ship laden with porcelain gradually emerged early Monday morning through the moon pool in the middle of a workboat named Fenli"奋力" that was tailor-made for the salvage operation.
The ship was scooped from the riverbed with a large watertight chamber known as a caisson, which was made from 22 giant arched steel beams. The caisson measures 48 meters long, 19 meters wide, 9 meters tall and weighs 8,800 tons. It was specifically built for this salvage operation to preserve the ship and contents within it as much as possible.
