Watch-and hear-the impact human noises have on marine life

Ocean sounds may help people sleep at night, but marine animals depend on them for survival. Take dolphins, which rely on echolocation to hunt and “clicks” to communicate with their pod. Such species are in trouble, because human-generated ocean noise, or anthrophony, has increased significantly since the Industrial Revolution.
Shipping vessels alone have cranked the low-frequency volume along shipping routes by an estimated 32 times. That along with harsh tones from sonar, seismic surveys, pile driving, and even motorboats (all of which can be heard in the video above) can strand whales and trap narwhals in ice by delaying their migration, according to a review published last week in Science.
The paper notes that climate change also threatens the soundtrack of the sea. The Great Barrier Reef has quieted over the years as it has shrunk in size and become less habitable. Animals that rely on the sounds of coral reefs to locate food and breeding settlements may struggle to adapt.
The authors argue that tamping down the human-made audio in the ocean should be a core component of environmental policy. And they say it can be done: a study conducted at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, for example, found that a reduction in shipping traffic coincided with an average decrease of 1.5 decibels in waters along shipping routes near the Port of Vancouver.

This is extremely interesting. One form of pollution that we certainty don't hear about is sound! Thank you for the information, this is so sad and we need to do a better job of protecting these animals. Ad it to the list of things we need to do to help the world's oceans and marine life!

Barely heard, thus, for most of us such things are hardly recognisable. Curious & inspiring!

I can't find the audio to the sounds when the sonar weapons testing was released.. doesn't anyone remember? Dolphin were heard communicating with another unknow marine animal.. like what ?

Why? Because WE ARE OUT-OF-CONTROL? "What's the difference between God granting [man] dominion over every living thing and the U.S. military seeking full-spectrum dominance?" We are an unfit species that doesn't deserve to share the planet with other beings.

NO, they die !!! We just had a Beluga whale who (due to noise pollution) got so disoriented that she found herself swimming in the Seine in France They spent millions to save her & bring her back to the ocean but she died yesterday after having been transported to the ocean..So sad !:( She was totally stressed & skinny from lack of food!

@@naomideguyane yes, that is sad. However animals dying is how nature adapts. It's called evolution through natural selection.

@@Tyronejizz This Ocean pollution ( NOISES) has NOTHING to do with natural selection Sir..It has to do with an arrogant, invasive, auto-destructive species called Man"kind" ( we should take the word kind out because most humans are everything but kind :'( not even towards each other they are :'( ) We are on the list of extinction too, as we pollute so much that Earth can't breathe anymore, literally! If we survive 2050 as a species I would be very surprised...Soon there will be no more elephants, no more giraffes, no more mammals left but the ones we unnaturally INSEMINATE to EAT THEM! This is also a big issue! Carnism! How can Earth keep providing meat dairy & eggs to 8 billion people who keep 80 billion animals alive ( to feed & give water to) only to kill them for their food! Why use an animal's flesh for proteins? It's absurd! Why not go straight to the source : plants!!! It would save us land, water, food resources & end this INSANE VILE CRUELTY towards defenseless farm animals who live in HELL because of us! Animal Farming is the biggest pollutor on Earth now (yes, it also pouutes the Ocean & creates dead zones that are extremely toxic) more than all public transport combined...I am an ethical Vegan for the animals..That it helps the ecology restore itself a little from our invasive, agressive behaviour is just the cherry on the "cake"..I am so sorry I write you such a long answer, but I feel ASHAMED that we are doing this to Mother Earth, not even thinking of the children who will live in hell because of us in 30 years from now...Have a peaceful weekend Sir...This is not a personal attack ..It is just an honest answer to your statement about "natural selection"..Nothing "natural" about noise pollution...Take care... *~*

@@Tyronejizz Humans don't adapt, they "rule" and will die and go extinct due to their misdeeds. That's how Nature cleanses itself of an unfit to live species.

@@Tyronejizz Have you not heard we are currently in a mass extinction caused by human activity? Evolution only works when animals that are more fit for survival survive and reproduce. How do you expect this to happen to whales that have a lifetime of over 60years? Whales from the 70s, where ship traffic was much lower, are still alive today. There is not enough time for evolution and natural selection because our input of disturbance is increasing at a fast rate. So no, they won't adapt due to natural selection.

Submarine only ping with active sonar in rare cases as it does give the pinging submarines location away. Surface destroyers and their sub hunting helicopters use their sonars actively more often as they assume the submarines know they are in the area. Active sonar pinging is only there to assist in pinpointing a submarine that is trying to evade or to assist a torpedo in it's terminal attack phase. Nothing is more stressful to a submariner than hearing a sonar ping bouncing off their hull.
