I’ve never owned a laptop, and I’ve been 100% lost in knowing what to look for. Can’t thank you enough for this video mate brilliant, absolutely brilliant. You’ve simplified so many confusing things, in the coolest of ways. I’ve already watched this video three times. 😂 From start to finish. And I’ll be checking it out again. I’m dead broke at the moment, but I’ll be signing up for that 14 day course also, as soon as I possibly can. Cheers dude.
Former Apple user. Only left because cost to build a computer and edit video made more sense the PC route. Upgrading to keep up is far cheaper too. My phone is the last hook Apple has in me.
OK, so you got a computer dummy here I learned so much from your videos. Thank you. I do have a question in your video. You mention the Samsung external hard drive. I am going to buy the recommended. Asus computer that you featured. I need it for minimal things, but the main thing is so that I can facilitate saving my videos from the cloud and onto external hard drives for storage, freeing up all the space on my iPad for my actual video editing and recording work. It’s the perfect solution for me anyway I tend to make five and six hour workshop videos and their monsters to load up to RU-vid but I hate having multiple part videos because people drop off when I have it as an entire workshop presentation for my artwork they tend to follow through the whole class and watch it sections. So my big question is on the Samsung external storage. The SSD I plan on buying a 1T cartridge. And looking at them, I see something about Read Speed . Some have a read speed of about 480. Others have a read speed of up to 2000. I am never going to be gaming on my computer. But is the 2000 speed that much better for uploading your videos to the SSD. Sorry for asking these basic questions. I just don’t have the right words or education to ask for the answers . So when you connect the SSD to your computer that has your videos stored in it and you want to work on one do you have to be able to upload it back to the computer or does it work right from the SSD when connected
Haha - cute. If your a serious video film making human this user is totally correct. If you need mobility then a full computer isn’t an option. I’m buying a laptop for my daughter, I have the extra money available to do this and for her level of up coming use a good laptop is what will fulfill her needs. If she starts making full length movies with loads of added layers then she will need to move to a powerful home computer with a large screen or three. We are moving away from Apple now also :) - Be well - you can get more power and better cost effective with a full computer and non Apple products. But if mobility is your need there are a lot of laptops that will do most work. He’ll I edit most of my social content on my phone 😂
Just watched one of your videos. Very informative and easy to understand. I’m 51 with little computer knowledge but love to travel and inspired too make RU-vid videos. Easier said than done. Pretty overwhelming
I believe you missing the most important part it is Media Engine Hardware accelerated. For MacBook it only support H.264, Hevc, ProRes and ProRes raw, when it playback av1 video the cpu using more cpu and more energy. If you looks into latest intel cpu it support encode and decode av1. Another new type is vvc. Media Engine is more important in video editing
Is a 16` macbook pro 1tb m2 max 38 gpu cores and 32gb ram worth it for 2850€ i need a powerfull macbook for the next +5years and i think it would be the best option to work with 4k footage and a lot animations with premiere and after effects, what do you think?
@@Yiro. Yo thanks for the tipp but it is still worth it to buy 2021 macbook in 2024 and for the vision to work arround +5years before upgrade? I Have build a custommade PC for 1000 Euros in 2021 and now in 2024 it is really bad for editing big videos in premiere or aftereffects. It Crashs and its terrible to work with this. I already used a m3 pro for 1 month in 2024 and i was still happy about that but i needed more more performance because it was not perfect for rendering in blender 3d animations, it get really hot and it render slow.
I’m a victim to purchasing a Mac book pro m3 128Gb 4Tb storage I found it in the refurb section though so I did save some money and my brother works at apple so I got an extra 15% off. But still stung hard and now I realize I don’t even need all that power doing my light editing and design. Oh well better to have it and not need it plus it’s future proof in a way I guess. I’m enrolled in your course and am enjoying it! Thank you for sharing all your knowledge.
Totally future-proof. M3 has AV1 compatibility, in a pair of years it might be the streaming standard and you’ll be able to edit at 4K without memory issues
I went in for 128gb Ram on the m3. I'm editing a full length feature film in 5K. But the caches being generated are horrendous. And then the computer glitches out till I delete all the caches manually which are upto 100 GB ram. Crazy as fcpx is not able to efficiently manage it. But as long as you know how to delete the generated files I'm finding 128 GB is helping me out big time.
I have a macbook 2013, great condition..... Eventually, the battery dies so quickly, can't upgrade, everything went to High-def video editing, rendering, my computer useless... most programs and apps, starts to not work and compatible........A replacement cost 1000k..... Note that I take care of my Macbook.....then I switch over to PC in 2020..... Parts are so easiliy and cheaply replaced and upgraded..... costing maybe $100.. that alone is amazing... So team PC now!!!! Long lasting!!!
Can I call it a coincidence or something. Last week, I was thinking about upgrading my LENOVO laptop that has served me for the last 4 years but I was confused which one go for between MacBook Pro and and the usual windows laptop that have been using for years. Then out of nowhere this awesome tutorial guide video just popped on my RU-vid channel. Thanks a lot mate, I am now going for MacBook Pro M2
From a professional standpoint, it really boils down to 3 laptops. A) Apple MacBook Pro 14-inch or 16-inch. B) Asus ProArt 16-inch. C) Lenovo Yoga Pro 16-inch.
Yoga pro was on my list to, amd 8845hs and rtx 3050, going quite cheap nowadays, but with all the new ai talk and the elite Snapdragon coming out next month, I might hold off for a few weeks. Ideally I'd like a m4 but that's another year or so away
Upvoting this for the excellent explanation of what makes a good mobile editing rig for the non-techie. The choices shown are far from Comprehensive, I usually point people toward gaming laptops (PC obviously) as they tend to have the same needs: Lots of CPU, lot's of GPU, Lots of Memory, Lots of storage. I currently edit on multiple ASUS 15" gaming laptops coming in at less then $600. They run DaVinci with relative ease and have been quite solid. I am looking for a main rig now, using the others to run renders while I continue to work. All this lets me stay supremely mobile as well.
We are comparing different arquitectures here Arm vs X86, Apple uses Arm and windows pcs use X86, just wait for the new Arm laptops with Snapdragon X elite inside and then you can compare apple laptops... but the problem here is that majority of windows software is based on x86 aquitecture and they have to change that to arm too, or emulation on top of it.
Maybe a stupid question but I'm learning.. Adobe Premier runs on ARM correct? Are there video editing softwares that require the x86? I only use Google docs/slides/sheets so unless there is something like photoshop or an editing software that needs x86, I wouldn't need something that runs x86 right?
We don’t really care about x86 vs Arm. Do you care about the motor in your car or truck? What about the engine in the airplane you’re on? No. As long as it works. Cool. Now, Win vs Mac: if you run Final Cut, Mac is your only option. If you run Adobe, Premiere Pro works on both. There are some apps that are Mac only. Many apps run Mac and PC. Few are PC only.
I know this is not what the video is about, but one other thing I would consider is that a lot of the PC laptops with a dedicated GPU can also be used for gaming. Although the M3 can handle it, not too many games are compatible with Apple.
MacBook Air m1 with 16gb RAM and 512SSD minimum. Great travel workhorse. 15 inch MBA seems to be a great option too but haven't used it yet. Also for LONG TERM USE..without plugging... you can't beat a Mac.
What MacBook do you recommend for editing 4k slog-3 sony footage with colour grading? I have an rtx 2060 super with ryzen 5 3600x and its good. But want to get a laptop for traveling thats why asking?
We all have to make sure these people that make these videos that there not paid to say the garbage they do.... Make sure they are genuine. This guy knows what he is talking about yippy
Wow am excited to have found you!! I am looking for a YT video course so will look at yours....I have to buy a new Mac soon but cannot afford all the specs and has to be portable so am looking at the Air with FNC software. I will also invest in an MBP later....so my question is if I get the MBA M2, do I need 24GB with 512GB SSD or 1TB or can get away with 16GB/512 temporarily? I will have Chrome opened for Google tabs for research, Drive/Docs, Notion, YT playlist and video conferencing. Learnig tech specs is a tough learnign curve for a nwbie, thank you for some pointers :) - ps: subscribed!!
So well-explained and put together not just for video editing but buying computers in general, I think. I would recommend your video to any of my friends who don't know much about laptops or are deciding between PC and Mac. Nice work!
Great video! I am a surface pattern designer/digital artist. For the Macbook M3pro I understood you to say 16gb or better 32gb of Ram which is great but when I look on the Apple site it says standard is 16 but I can optimize the Ram to 36gb...I dont understand why it isnt 32?? thanks for your help!

Mine is DELL inspiron 16 2-in-1, FIngerprinrt, 16:10-inch with FHD(1920X1200) Touch display, Ram=16GB storage = 512GBSSD, GPU of 7GB, with CPU of 12th-Geninter corei7 -1260P with 12 cores and speed of 2.10GHz, what recommendation or comment you give me bro
Funny - I do all my videos on the GoPro 12 with the Max Lens 2 superview and my editing is all done on my Samsung 24 plus with 12 gigs of ram and 512 gigs of storage.
I love my ASUS Vivobook with the AMD Ryzen 9 processor, GeForce RTX video card, 1 TB drive and 32 GB Ram. It will handle anything I throw at it. I use CapCut for editing.
@@timothyishyc It is an ASUS VivoBook Pro 15. Its about $1200. Sorry, I accidentally put Acer in the original post but I corrected it. :) It is an ASUS.
But how is the M-Chip thing new? AMD first released CPU and GPU on the same chip in 2011 (Fusion Family). What is the new thing about the M that makes them better?
If you are a gamer who does RU-vid videos what is a decent one I have a pc directly into the sunlight and I mostly never get the chance to go on it so what do I do
For video editing needs, do laptops with i9 generation 12 HX and RTX 3080 TI have better performance compared to i9 generation 13 HX and RTX 4060 laptops? What do you think?
I need something for family video editing, pretty basic and I’m still learning Adobe so I’m not personally fast. I do have a LOOOOOOT of video to use and I don’t prefer Apple (entrenched PC user, my foray into a Mac 20 years ago was maddeningly frustrating, though I do use iPhone products.) I also have an insane number of digital photos. Currently DIY’d 2TB storage into my v old laptop and it’s a minimum. Any recommendations on which way to lean for an impatient but beginner family video editor who keeps laptops for YEARS. Please and thank you!
Hello are these good specs? Apple 2023 MacBook Pro Laptop M3 chip with 8‑core CPU, 10‑core GPU: 14.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR Display, 8GB Unified Memory, 512GB SSD Storage. Works with iPhone/iPad; Space Gray (Renewed). The price is $1299
HHey man. I have a question. Do you think the high end gaming laptops make for photo editing laptops? Thinking an 18 inch. What factors do you think need to be considered? Screen quality clearly right? Which gaming laptops have those stats?
Will a macbook pro M1 MAX 32 gb ram and 1TB SSD be able to handle editing ProRes Raw 5.8k Footage? Saw someone for fairly cheap on ebay used and wondering if i can get away with this for a editing laptop. Thanks in advance.
Guys I’m planning to buy MacBook Air m3 15inch 16gb ram 256 gb ssd, i mostly do 1080p short form/reels video editing in premeire pro and now I’m planning to start editing in after effects(motion graphics) ,should I buy MacBook Air m3 15inch 16gb ram 256 gb ssd variant???
Hello I have created a youtube Channel and am planing to shoot with an iphone so now i am looking up to buy the new HUAWEI D16 2024 i5 12450H ( 8 BG RAM & 512 ROM ) with 2 GB GRAPHIC CARD. Please i want to know if i can buy it for my beginings ????
Thank you for your video on laptops comparison. It make it easier for me to decide which one I should buy. I have the M2 16" Macbook Air. It is the best, however, now that AI Copilot came out. I am looking for AI laptop with the table 360 comes with stylus pen. So far I haven't any. Do you have any recommendation for an AI 13-14" laptops come with stylus pen touch screen? Thank you for your help.
Unfortunately my experience with DELL has been only negative with all the problems I have had. It’s slow and problems with keyboard. My Apple desktop too is very slow. I had great run with HP Envy so far. I am now replacing DELL with HP 14” laptop with 32 gB memory and 1 TB HDD and a separate graphic card. Hope it runs without hassles.
I bought a laptop for work a few months ago. Great for getting things done on the go, but if I tried using it for editing, the thing would absolutely catch fire.
Hey mate, Question. What would your opinion be for the lightest laptop on the market still capable of doing basic 4k video editing for travelling??? I made the rookie error of getting the Legion 9i pro. Beast of a machine, it's great. But now I am doing long term remote travelling etc.. It's just waaaaayyyy to heavy 😂🤣 Takes up nearly all.my carry on weight.. I don't want Apple.. 😬
I thought it was a great idea to buy a Macbook Pro M3 since it can also run Windows 11 via Parallel. What a regret, it is impossible to run two external monitors!!!.Even with one external, one screen will only be on Windows and the other one Apple, making no sense having multiple monitors. I need to sell my Macbook and goes back to PC
I like how he said pound for pound, spec for spec apple Has a performance boost over windows, however what about the cost? I can easily find a windows with a similar cost to any current generation MacBook that has far better components that's why I won't switch to Apple; because if I spend €1500 on a laptop 9/10 times I will find a windows with more beefy components such as more RAM, better GPU and CPU combo than whatever the Mac at that same price point has
Hello, you are someone who has made a transition from a 2019 to mba, i have few question and perhaps you would be able to help me out, i am currently using a 2012 mbp, and i do 1080 edit and occasional 4k edits about less than a minute duration just a passion, with no issue what so ever, however recently i used one of my cousins 16 inches 2019 i9 i was baffled by the size of the screen, especially for someone who was using 13 inches 2012 for atleast 5 years while searching macbook in the second hand markets i can see 2019 16 inches and macbook air 13 m1 8gb variant, unfortunately there is no 16gb m1 available, and both are similarly priced cant decide should i go for a the large screen a large trackpad or should i go for the macbook air since my kind of workflow is not that daunting, would it actually stress the cpu that much since 2012 only kicked their cpu when i was exporting the project i usually add some musics transitions color correct and add overlays, nit much and the 2012 handles well running on sonoma open core, 16gb ram and 256 gb ssd
@@MrPaulXavier haha yes, my wife wanted a insta360 for our holiday, had a great time filming everything, Arrived back only to find my laptop couldn't even open a video. By casually, I meant I won't be doing editing as a profession, just for home use, so if I have to wait another 10 seconds for something, is not a big deal. Everyone's saying to pick up a M3 max, but that thing is pretty pricey, I'm trying to find just enough hardware to get the job done. I also need to upgrade my laptop.
Ahh ok that makes more sense haha - if you could spring for an older generation M MacBook I think that would do great. Like a 32 gigabyte m2 for example
Didn't mention the fact that PCs are no good with the H265 codec. Apple is better at it as the codec is built in. Sure, you can "download" H265 codec but in my experience they never really work well. I guess a lot of this depends on whether the software that you use has the codec built in.
Awesome video! Just a question is the link for the Asus vivobook still valid ? AMD Ryzen 7 5800HS Processor, 24GB RAM, 2TB SSD? I was thinking of buying it but it had so few reviews I was Ted to make sure . Thanks again and keep up the great work
The specs of the computer i'm interested are these I9 32GB Ram Gforce 4060 (8 VRAM) 1 TB 2K resolution 240hz I intend in working with freelance video editing and also a youtube channel focused in gaming (AAA focused) the brand is Avell (Local brand here in brazil, it has a good reputation) Anyone have observations to make? right now i'm really not sure about 32 and 64 ram... It is quite expensive in this case to pay for 64. Edit: another version I've consideribly reduced the price by having and I7, 4050 (But 6Vram instead of 8) and 1080 resolution instead of 2k, all of that for 64 ram is it worth it?
An i9 in a laptop is completely pointless. The power requirements and heat output means that you'd realistically get better performance in 99% of tasks with an i7, for typically cheaper. Even highly threaded workloads don't benefit. I'd save the money and see if you can get more memory.
@@aarrondias9950 I've consideribly reduced the price by having and I7, 4050 (But 6Vram instead of 8) and 1080 resolution instead of 2k, all of that for 64 ram is it worth it?
Is the lenovo slim 5 gen 9 32 gb ram 4060 good for video editing. Im talkin animation/music videos with various effects. I currently have a HP Envy x360 15-fe0019na Convertible, 16 gb ram ryzen 7. Its laggin crazy and crashes sometimes in after effects. I can do very short videos no issues but anything longer than 30 secs and its inoperable. What is it about this envy specs that makes it incapable of handling editing in after effects?
I have an MSI laptop with i9, 64gb ram, 4070 vga and it's a piece of garbage for video editing... Just buy the new laptops with the snapdragon x CPU, similar architecture as M series Apple soc-s, or go for macbooks. I'm very curious about the snapdragon because i came from windows...
Hi bruh im gonna hold money for m4 pro but i will only be able to buy 18gb ram one since apple products in my country are way more expensive base m3pro 18 gb model is of 2400 dollar Will 18gb varient will be enough for video editing thats my main need i want to use photoshop davinchi resolve and few other editing software mainly for my yt video purpose?
PC vs Apple laptop for editing you should ask yourself if you are going to be plugged in or not. If you can plug in and use wall power go PC, if you are going to be using the laptop battery power go Apple. Apple is more efficient on battery, PC is better if you are using wall power.
I'm going to guess 95% of the time people need to edit they are close to wall power. But I'm sure some will absolutely need to edit while skydiving or whatever.
