Yes, It’s Real. Here’s How it Happened. Re-enacting the unlikeliest accident on Chesapeake Bay tells us a lot about boating safety. This video, filmed in Annapolis with Chesapeake Bay Media and the Annapolis School of Seamanship, is produced with a grant from the Sport Fish Restoration and Boating Trust Fund, administered by the U.S. Coast Guard.

Having just completed a passage from FL to MD on both the ICW and offshore...I have noticed a stark difference between sailors and power-boaters. The main thing I noticed is that most (but not all) power-boaters simply do not understand or acknowledge the rules of road. In some cases, they are clearly just being a-holes. But most of the time, they simply do not know the rules regarding stand-on and give-way. Many states are starting to require MARINE DRIVERS LICENSES, and as a sailor...I am all for it.

As a person who enjoys freedom I am against licensing for something that a free man of this world should be allowed to do and that is travel do I think people should be courteous and kind yes should they be attentive by all means but do I think that should be regulated by a government oh no sir

If the sailboat had tacked to port and presented his stern to the oncoming powerboat, he would probably be dead.

Well well, so nice to see that the captain of the Costa Concordia has been released from prison and is back at work.

What they're saying in the video is basically, you can be dead right. That is both correct, and dead. But basically the powerboat was running fast, the guy at the wheel was either completely incapacitated or just an insane asshole. My bet on a day like that with so many people on board, is that he was an insane asshole, which is often an incapacitating condition. What other problem could there have been? Turn the wheel a spoke, throttle down for 5 seconds... He would still have passed close and severely waked the sailboat. That would not have been all that unusual. This? The guy running the powerboat should have been jailed.

Agreed, even implying that the sailboat should have done differently is absurd. Getting a 50 ft sailboat out of the way of a powerboat dumbass like that is not as easy as it sounds. The powerboat could just as likely have steered away in the last second, hitting the sail boat in it´s attempt to evade. Embarrassing how some people don´t even bother to get along in the vast freaking ocean.

The sailboat has absolutely nothing to do in the guilt question. Whatever, WHATEVER the sailboats action, if he even have speed enough to turn, could have been way worse and cause everyone to die. So the guilt can not be put on them in any way. If that even was a possibility then all powerboaters could aim at every single sailboat they see and let the insurance company a new boat every year. You teach captains? Cmon, I really hope that's not the case.

I totally agree. Gathering these "experts" who come to that conclusion is just an embarrassing proof that in the US, money talks, and sanity already went.

I would assume there was no one at the helm of the power boat. I've owned both, I'd always fall off to avoid a collision.

You have made the most simplest thing so complex and confusing. I would hate to have you teaching me. Are you sure you're not the one that taught the power boat driver.

Idiocy at its finest, how can someone even try to imply the sail-boater should have acted differently.

I'm surprised there was no mention of the power boat being engaged in commercial fishing. I've seen this on the Chesapeake Bay. Charter boats out trolling for rock fish with paying passengers and trailing multiple trolling lines out refuse to yield, even though thats not commercial fishing and they aren't running planers.
@haydenwatson7987
@haydenwatson7987 Год назад
He was not a "vessel engaged in fishing" per the Colregs a sport fisher out fishing even with trolling lines out behind is a Vessel under Power not Vessel Engaged in Fishing. They get away with it because other boaters let them. This is mainly because of the Rule 17 (a) (i) and (b) (i) which requires the Stand on to keep clear if Give-way is a dick. According to Rule 16(d). This Rule does not relieve the give-way vessel of her obligation to keep out of the way. That means that the sport fishermen will keep flouting the rules until they are compelled to stop. For the charter Captains, you can provide evidence to the CG and file a complaint which can get them a fine or suspension of license. Rule 3 (d). The term “vessel engaged in fishing” means any vessel fishing with nets, lines, trawls or other fishing apparatus which restrict maneuverability, but does not include a vessel fishing with trolling lines or other fishing apparatus which do not restrict maneuverability.

When I'm on the water I take absolutely nobody's actions for granite. I drive defensively and boat defensively as if I was driving a vehicle On the road. I do not trust my life in anybody else's hands But my own and I will always be the give way vessel and just about any circumstance to avoid any kind of accident

You are compelled to avoid collision even if you had the right of way Even if you pull a last minute maneuver it is hard to predict what the other vessel might also do last minute But doing nothing like even blowing a horn is not the best option

FL sailor that keeps a 42 ft. sloop in Rock Hall MD: The Chesapeake may be the best place to hone your sailing skills in the world. It is beautiful and there are obstacles everywhere - above and below the waterline. Powerboats on autopilot, crab traps, sailboats, container ships, shoals, beacons, buoys, lighthouses, Annapolis on the weekends, etc. Don't like the weather? Wait an hour. I know the COLREGs, review them regularly and enjoy practicing them - but it takes two to tango and about half the time powerboats don't dance. VHF Ch. 16 regularly entertains with fallout from their close calls. Just like docking - always have a plan B and C.

Good article for newcomers to take in. It's pretty basic if you have ever been in a crosssing situation in a sailing yacht going to windward ina race and wondering if you are going to cross your competitoron the opposite tack who is closing distance with you and has been so for some time when only one has right of way. Check Is the angle changing ? check again and again and again !!

This video is not entirely accurate. The news reports show that the sailor attempted to signal the powerboater.

Cbm....... clearly generate revenue in all directions. Let's do a you tube to recreate and discuss the scenario to a "sort of no fault" scenario by depicting error at all levels. This is the most egregious post mortem I've ever read. You should be ashamed at even posting this crap. So who paid you off. Or is this exoneration? Get a real job. You're no good at this. And who even authorized you to publicly generate this commentary. Independent of the rules of the road regarding stand on vessels, it's a boat under power versus a boat under sail in clear daylight. You can put all the lipstick you like on this pig, but it's still a pig. As said, your commentary as professionals is shameful. Capt Kaz

A more detailed analysis would have been appreciated. Were they running AIS? Was there an attempt to contact by radio. Was emergency signaling used? It doubtful that a small horn would have been heard, but at least an attempt was required. etc, etc

Sailboaters and powerboaters are different? Come on. A seaman is a seaman is a seaman.

I beg to differ. Comparing a powerboater or a jet-skier with a sail-boater is like comparing a hammer to a feather. The only common feature is they are close to water.
