Watch Daniel Dennett Destroy Religion for 10 minutes Straight

In this thought-provoking video, Daniel Dennett explores the intriguing concept that many people might believe in the concept of belief in God more than they actually believe in God. Bennett dives into the psychological and cultural factors that shape our faith and how societal norms and personal expectations influence our spiritual convictions. Through insightful analysis and engaging discussion, he uncovers how belief systems are often more about adhering to societal structures than genuine faith.
Join Bennett as he navigates this complex topic, offering fresh perspectives on why so many individuals might maintain a belief in the idea of believing rather than the divine itself. Whether you're a seeker of truth or simply curious about the nature of faith, this video provides a compelling examination of the intersection between belief, identity, and societal influence. Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more thought-provoking content from Daniel Bennett.

@robertfranklin8704 Believing in the angels of our better nature, to borrow Lincoln’s phrase, is certainly idealism but as Stephen Pinker points out in his book of the same name, we are becoming a better species, though you might not guess that based on RU-vid comments. We tend to use social pressure more that violence to coerce people, which is better but we have not arrived.

I knew a woman who believed that if she gave $50 to the church every Sunday, her son would pass a difficult test. She did, but he did not, but that didn't bother her. Her belief was so "strong" that she could not abandon it in the face of facts or events. Eric Hoffer wrote a terrific book, "The True Believer," that should be required reading in every college. Hoffer lived a difficult life without what we call security. That life kept him in touch with the real world. When I was growing up, a priest moved into the large corner house next to mine and lived in a make-believe world. He believed reading a sermon once a week justified his two large cars (I think they were Lincoln Continentals), hiring people to do his yard work, wearing expensive jewelry like turquoise watch bands, and asking church goers for money at every opportunity. The priest knew nothing of life; Hoffer was intimate with it. I went to a parochial high school where I was forced to take a theology course each year. By the time I graduated, I learned that the clergy and lay instructors only wanted to "teach" the propaganda, not explore real questions like the origin of evil or why so many millions of us suffer. I would ask why, if a god created us all in his image and loves us like children, he apparently abandons so many to evil and crime, but would receive a blank smile for an answer. I would ask why, if a god loves us all, did he try to kill us all in a global flood, but would receive no answer. I would ask why a god who created us just the way he wanted us would proceed to punish us for our mistakes which he called "sins." No answer. Faith is the antithesis of reason and therefore people with faith cannot be reasonable. It is no use trying to reason with them.

@starfishsystems
@starfishsystems Месяц назад
The argument for skepticism - which, by the way, goes back to classical Greek philosophy - is that we don't just throw any old thing into the swimming pool in order to fill it up. I'm talking about skepticism, which says that the time to believe a proposition is when there is enough evidence to find it can be reasonably justified, AND NOT BEFORE. In other words, it's fine to say "I don't know" or "I'm not convinced" when there isn't enough evidence to go on. Such an "affirmative argument for non-belief" is the same principle we apply when we tell children not to put random things into their mouths. We should not believe, by default, that random things are good to eat. By default, we should WITHHOLD such belief. What is it about these people that they profess not to understand such a basic principle of epistemology? Don't contaminate your thinking with assertions that have not been tested. They're not facts until they've been established as facts. No, it doesn't matter if you really want them to be true. Sorry, it still doesn't matter even if you really REALLY want them to be true.

Which suggests that for modern atheists, they just believe in one less god than most believers, for the same reasons those believers don't think ancient gods of other religions exist. Some people just need a reassurance that there's something in control of everything, and that's where their belief is centered, conveniently matched to the religion in their location.

We can easily prove evolution just by staying with the human body alone. 1. Our third eyelid (wich we don't use anymore to moisten our eyes) can still be seen. Why do we have it? 2. Our tail bone. Why do we have it? 3. Our muscles to wiggle our ears. We don't use them. So why do we have them? 4. Goosebumps. To raise the hairs on our body like cats and dogs. What's their use? 5. People still born with flat feet like apes. 6. Wisdom teeth. 7. Male nipples. 8. That stupid muscle under your foot that cramps up has no use. Unless you're an ape trying to grab with your feet... 9. The looking for agency where none exists is a great argument on why people believe in gods. I like Richard Dawkins' description of this: suppose you're an early human, living in the jungles of Africa. You hear a rustling in the leaves nearby. Now, the most likely answer is that it's the wind moving the leaves. Very logical. But, what if it's a leopard getting ready to pounce on you? Less likely, but far, far more dangerous, even fatal, if true. Which one are you going to think is true? To think that it's just the wind or err on the side of caution and assume it's a dangerous predator? Which one is going to keep you alive longer, despite it being inherently irrational to always assume there's an agency?

The idea that people believe in belief in god is profoundly true. Even as theism is facing its greatest challenge in human history, even those who are atheists, agnostic, non-believers, etc. acknowledge the cultural institutions and influence of religions in the areas of Arts and Music. Dawkins commented that he is a "cultural christian" which sounds like an oxymoron, but I can identify with this sentiment. As an ex christian atheist, I still find beauty in sacred music, appreciate The Last Supper, awe inspiring Taj Mahal, the intricacies of the Ardabil Carpet, and so on. In context of daily living, believers are quite protective of the institution of church/synagogue/mosque/temple than their personal belief in god/gods. They believe in the necessity of religion to bring people together, to unite them in a common cause, etc. In short, the faith itself has more practical influence in the world than the actual truth f god's existence.

With the greatest respect, and I say this as an agnostic, there is no destruction of ‘religion’ here at all, very weak by any philosophical approaches. His mic drop moment of people don’t believe it god, but the belief in the belief was so poor I had to watch it 3 times to see what I missed. I see the, if god is real, who wrote the bible, man, argument across the comments. Agreed, tis a puzzler for the religious fundamentalist! By the same token…ask an atheist to define what existed before the Big Bang….”well, that’s not for me to answer” You cannot destroy religion in modern society until you have defined all the mechanisms of the universe, of life, of creation. Religion cannot kill atheism until you prove the processes behind all what we know have purposive meaning of a creator. So rock/hard place come to mind. Fundamentalist atheism attacks the written explanations of God, which will always reveal inconsistency because of the flawed nature of man. But, critiquing the cinematic dump of Braveheart for historical inaccuracy does not change the fact that there was a William Wallace who fought against the English. Let’s just have a cup of tea instead and stop trying to destroy each others perspective

@@thetruthaboutscienceandgod6921 So is Allah the only true god? LMAO Modern interpretations of the Quran often highlight verses that some believe align with contemporary events or scientific knowledge, which are sometimes considered "fulfillments" of the Quran's guidance or prophecies. Here are some modern interpretations that are often discussed: ### 1. **The Spread of Islam** - **Quran 24:55**: “Allah has promised those who have believed among you and done righteous deeds that He will surely grant them succession [to authority] upon the earth...” - This is seen by some as a prophecy about the rapid spread of Islam globally, especially considering the significant growth of Muslim populations in the modern world. ### 2. **Advancement in Communication** - **Quran 81:4-5**: “And when the she-camels, ten months pregnant, are abandoned, and when the wild beasts are gathered...” - Some modern interpretations suggest this verse alludes to the advent of communication technology that would make travel less necessary, such as the internet, leading to a metaphorical abandonment of traditional transportation like camels. ### 3. **Signs of the End Times** - **Quran 99:1-2**: “When the earth is shaken with its [final] earthquake and the earth discharges its burdens...” - Some interpret these verses as references to modern environmental disasters, including earthquakes and other natural phenomena that are increasing in frequency and intensity. ### 4. **Discoveries in the Universe** - **Quran 51:47**: “And the heaven We constructed with strength, and indeed, We are [its] expander.” - This is often linked to the modern understanding of the expanding universe, which aligns with scientific discoveries about the cosmos. ### 5. **Transportation Revolution** - **Quran 16:8**: “And [He created] the horses, mules, and donkeys for you to ride and [as] adornment. And He creates that which you do not know.” - This verse is seen by some as a reference to future modes of transportation unknown at the time, such as cars, trains, and airplanes. ### 6. **Discovery of Iron** - **Quran 57:25**: “...And We sent down iron, in which is great military might and benefits for the people...” - This verse is sometimes viewed as alluding to the extraction and use of iron in modern technology, machinery, and industry. These interpretations often reflect an effort to connect ancient scripture with modern phenomena, scientific discoveries, and technological advancements, demonstrating the perceived timelessness and ongoing relevance of the Quranic text in contemporary contexts.

Mr. Dennett's statement that: "Religious people care so much about what everybody else believes...." is a flawed conclusion. It is not the religion that spurs believers to convince others that they are right and that others need to accept their belief too. Unless you can argue that Nazism and Marxism and Capitalism are religions too, because they attract and convince just as ardent followers as any recognized religions. To me it just says something about human nature that certain people need to feel absolutely certain about the meaning and significance of their existence and are motivated to convince others of the same "truth".

Thinking is what Daniel Dennett was promoting. He finishes modestly by saying "I am not sure why... " Thus far I can travel with him, but even wanting to believe in believing in the concept of God can lead to a study of scriptures (all faiths, all traditions and histories, all testimonies, all debaters) then the door is opened both ways for grace to arrive and be present at the right time. There are a few arguments for atheism. That is, positive arguments that argue god doesn't exist. If the universe was not created, we'd know it would have to be very big in order for the right conditions for life to occur. And it would need to be very old to allow for enough time for life to happen. Lo and behold we find ourselves in the exact universes we'd need to have if there was no god. And if there was a god, we wouldn't need these physical bodies that exist in this physical environment on a physical planet in a physical universe. If god made us we could all be disembodied brains that exist on a some plane of existence. We wouldn't need all these atoms and complex chemistry and Newtonian laws.

More People Believe in "Belief in God" than People Who Believe in God. That's what the title means. With that clarified, the rest makes perfect sense. I know many Christians but not one of them qualifies as an authentic one. They believe in belief more than knowing. They want to be saved, and that's an ego desire, not an understanding of the Infinite. They believed the lie that they need to be saved. All they need is to become more conscious, and religious dogmas work to suppress that by locking in the lie.

People stop thinking for a lot of reasons, usually because they can't sit with their own feelings and scapegoat God or Satan or some other external force. I didn't believe in God either but I changed. I'm not 'stopping thinking'. In fact the things I can now think about are far more gestaultic that I had previously. " Then you should have no problem convincing anyone for your god. What evidence do you have about your deistic god? What attributes does it have? What evidence do you have for it? How can you demonstrate it? It is irrational and arrogant to believe in something that you have no evidence for. Faith is what people use when they have no supporting facts or evidence.

If I was forced by some Christian group to attend a religious service every week, I'd go and sit for an hour or two, but it would be as senseless as sending an individual who never in their life ever drank a drop of alcohol to a Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. In addition, is that all Christianity is, attending a religious service every week? Sounds awfully shallow.

Isn't parental deity religion all based on the manipulation, as well as the masturbation, of infantile and childhood attachment. Which is an extremely profound neurological drive. If it fails in its attachment life will fail as well. Life is just way easier with parents. Real or imagined. Folks to care about us and protect us and provide for us. And most importantly have plan for us. This is why everyone in the hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Empire is either your Mother or Father or Brother or Sister. The greatest psychiatrist of the 2Oth century, Carl Gustaf Jung, called this attachment "Infantile Familial Archetypes." It is largely a matter of brain chemistry. Especially Dopamine. And is basically what Hollywood is based on. For many folks life just feels more secure with parents somewhere in the picture. Which is something we are all born hard wired to do.💙

I suppose the earthworms will "appreciate" Dennett for his mass, if they were permitted to eat his remains. We don't know about that. If he was burned, it would be a loss for them. But for those atheists who "miss" him, that too is an illusion, because there was and is no purpose for his existence or yours. All I expect from atheists is honesty.
