📝 We (Kimchi & I) provided HEVC (x265) and AV1 version of most of the tests. They are 200Mbps and 120Mbps version. 200Mbps is very high quality and you can use it to get lower bitrate version if needed. 10-bit will be only noticeable quality different in Meta Quest Pro or any HDR supported VR headsets. We also provided a 2D to 3D 360 AI converted One RS 1" video. It is BAD 3D, it is 100% AI. But the tech can get better very soon. We are actively doing research on that front. great work to share more about video quality not only on production side but now even on consumer side. I didn't know the funnel of RU-vid VR app and similar. the best solution I am going to keep more is the cache for meta tv. skybox VR is already in my wishlist since I got the Quest 2 on day one. the best VR180 for me is the boston experience with spatial audio. really a good way to make the first experience of the technology and feeling the great ASMR effect even.

Awww thank you! It is crazy you like the Boston ASMR! People think City soundscape is not relaxing lol. I do have to point out Skybox still having issue to show Ambisonic on RU-vid correctly so all my spatial audio production is left heavy. Only work on RU-vid VR :(

Thank you for the wealth of information!!! Especially the test of the very high resolutions that make the XR2 crash! What a waste of pixels. I'm disapointed because 8k in 360 means only 2k in the eyes. It's not sharp at all. For 360 we need 16k to have a pixel-per-degree equal to Quest's screen. So I guess the best available quality is only reached in monoscopic 180 and we have to forget 360. Anyways, Skybox VR is the best video player and I don't have it so please enter me in the raffle :) EDIT: maybe in PCVR a RTX 4090 could read 16k and send 4k to the Quest. There is still hope :)

Great, great, great content! So here is the deal. getting new insta 360 x4 ( and I need a headset to watch it) correct me if I wrong please? The best way to watch 8k 360 is with a remote desktop and Quest 3 right now (or) save some buck and get Quest 2 and port video directly to Quest 2 with dev mode

Yes exactly. Or you can upload on Meta Quest TV to share it to the world to see it in 8K. As long as you upload in 8K, Meta Quest is the only platform share less compressed 8K way better quality than 8K on RU-vid for now.

If you have a quest 3 try cupping one hand and covering your ear with the Quest 3 playing sound. The speakers are amazing !! They only really operating at about 30 percent of capacity. Sometimes I just put on over ear headphones and not plug them in to get the great sound. If I plug in the headphones they sound terrible, no idea why.

Prob a firmware issue of sound rendering. Headphone should be the best and only way to hear TBE - 3rd ambisonic for game use this tech. Our film use this tech and always sound better in headphone than open ear speaker on Q3

Great info and just recently got my headset. There were warnings on the lens and some videos about not exposing the lens to sunlight, but i see around 9:40 you have one outside. Did they mean "Direct" sunlight? cause you yours is getting indirect on those lenses.

It is supported on my beta version which is not out in the public lol. The screen capture half of them is their beta. But yes, I will certainly do it. This is changing the landscape for VR creators as RU-vid is the best place to post if we can get rid of the horrible compression

Update: Skybox will support it in the next version 1.1.6. I am note sure if it's also for PCVR but at least on the Quest itself I guess. :)

Hugh as always THANK YOU. I don't know if something is wrong with my quest 3, I'm running version 59- I did download some of the files. I am having stuttering problems both streaming and locally playing in Skybox. Also just getting a black - and three dots loading ... in the TV app. Anyone else experiencing this issue?

Yes. You are probably not in the latest version of Skybox (not out yet) so wait. Skybox is still testing lots of expertmental features on Quest 3. Quest 3 itself need an update as well. In 120fps playback actually work great on Quest 2 but Quest 3 it crashes. Quest TV also need an update to support av1. Highly possiblity it is codec issue. Things work on Q2 not necessary on Q3. I will make an encoding guide next to help with the issue. We are actively researching and making content to bridge this gap. Q3 is a very new devices - and update will come to make it better.

Quest TV any day. Quest Browser is great quality but the UI is horrible. And do not support VR180 and subtitle will be weird. Quest TV has the best streaming quality and AV1 is coming very soon. It is not as good as 8K AV1 right now especially for that buffer at the beginning. But it will get better natively. RU-vid VR best experience is actually in Skybox VR which use their WebXR layers. I really wish RU-vid engineers are watching this and fix their VR app on all platform.

You have 7680x7680 30fps HEVC listed as a playback option for the Quest 3. I've been trying to get my Pro 2 footage to play back at this size at different bitrates but it stutters at all of them. Maybe you meant 7680c7680 30fps is a fail? Sidenote - I love the new NYX AI setting for removing noise from the Pro 2's night videos and from darker objects in my videos. I ve never used vr before and i just bought a quest 3, is it normal that i see a somewhat bit blurry image and can still see the pixels and not sharp image or txt?i don t have anything to compare it with and it s my first vr headset

Have you adjust the IPD to your eye IPD? What is your vision? Do you wear glasses? If you do make sure you wear your glasses in VR as well.

@@hughhou no i don t wear glasses and yeah i adjusted the ipd, apart from blurry image or txt, there is an halo around center i did a factory reset but still the problem persist. I contacted meta they offered to replace it but i ll go to argos tomorrow cause i just bought it today and see if they can replace it because with meta i have to ship it and they have to ship back a new one and they say it might take up to 15 days

Thanks for sharing. love your videos. however, i cant watch your vr180 8k videos from quest browser in 3d and max res shown is 1440p from the gear icon. videos are shown as regular 2d clips. perhaps due to quest version update?

VR180 does not work on Quest Browser at this moment. It is a known bug. The only way to watch VR180 is using Skybox VR in 8K on RU-vid. But all my VR180 videos are official launch on Meta Quest TV - which is the best way to watch VR180 video without compression. Quest TV current is the best way, even compare to Apple Vision Pro, Quest TV quality outshine them all in the streaming world.

Man, i CAN NOT get any files to export from Resolve to playback smoothly in my Quest 3. Trying to get both mono and stero files from the TITAN to play and just cant seem to make it work.. Have a link to encoding tutorial mentioned at 16:28 ?

Great stuff once again, I have been on board with VR content since the beginning, one of the things I really like that I didn't think much about is the mixed reality and passthrough, I have been messing around with some videos with a green screen and realize it is actually pretty cool. have you tried making anything like that, I would love to see something in 10k in passthrough mode, that would be a game changer. Would love to hear what you think about that.

Yes! Passthought VR180 is a next big thing. DEO VR can do that natively. But since producing it is very expensive and the distribution is very limited (no other player can use it) so I did not do much research. If I see a bigger demand on this area, I will try to work with DEO VR to figure out a workflow to do that easier.

excellent video, once again. We're still looking for the best way to produce and play back 3DVR Videos, but haven't decided yet. Unfortunately the Quest 3 does not support 60Hz any more and Skybox can't play 120Hz on Quest 3 for some reason, although it still works on Quest 2. Most 8K60 footage played back on Quest 3 from Skybox RU-vid, Meta Browser or MetaTV still looks choppy due to the 60->90fps frame interpolation. Especially horizontal movements look terrible on any video.

So skybox is working 120fps playback. Some Quest 3 issues they are solving and they are well aware the issue. Totally agree with the issue and all players are trying to address this. Gamers get priority on update lol. But I hope this video is making headway to get Meta take us serious!

@@hughhouwe really hope so. Especially steroscopic VR Videos have a huge potential for many reasons. It's still a technology to discover and develop, but this is another level of immersion. Once standalone headsets with 120Hz are as small as the Bigscreen Beyond it's something that can get into the mainstream market.

If you get that, meaning the video you are watching is NOT 8K. If you DO NOT get that, can you try use a faster wifi connection and stand closer to your router? RU-vid use dynamic resolution limit which is super annoying for testing and finding bugs...

I have a GoPro MAX 360 camera that I would like to side load 360VR videos of my eScooter rides and test. I just purchased the MQ3 which will be here Thursday so I am excited to try these features to immerse my audience on these rides I take. Is there any settings outside of the standard 360 settings for the GoPro I would need to change and would Skybox VR be the simplest ease of use for review/playback?

I'd like a skybox license. I still tried playing VR in youtube with poor results in youtube VR and in the Meta browser on a Quest 3. In the voutube vr app, your Barcelona video plays at 2160, but many youtube VR videos like your CALF, Sintipon music videos still suffer from the 1080p resolution cap. Meta browser still doesn't work well. With your Barcelona video, setting the settings, it shows a severely misaligned parallax and zoomed in, all youtube VR videos on the quest browser seem to play with this unwatchable distortion. And top resolution for that was 1440p same goes for the sintipon video. Most quest browser VR videos still suffer the 1080p curse like your CALF vr video.

My CALF VR video I believe it is 6K VR180 - so it does not trigger the 8K av1 flag to encode in 8K av1 - so it drop to 1080p. At least that is what I guess. I will enter you into the draw of Skybox VR. Skybox VR next version support VR180 in 8192 X 4096 at 60fps av1 - crazy stuffs! It is not out yet tho.

The browser on RU-vid doesn't seem to work on many videos. When I try to display in 3d it often doesn't do it correctly (also has performance problems). Same videos in RU-vid TV play fine but of course are limited to 2160s.

Yes, the browser only work for 3D 360 video not VR180 video - and you have to choose top and bottom - side by side won't work so that is probably why. If you can keep submitting request to RU-vid. So we have a combined voice to get google to do some thing to fix their app!

@@hughhou have one here but it's a bit disappointing. Snapchat has a bug where I can only export the 2d version like with Spectacles 1 or 2. Support tells they're working on it but I guess it will not happen because it's an old Modell and why you should update your Software for it. Even RU-vid upload is broken sadly. But you've really no way to access these files on other ways than the Snapchat app.

I will take Global Shutter camera ANYDAY! Especially for 120fps content. But global shutter camera is VERY VERY EXPENSIVE - so it is why no camera out there yet to reach the resolution we need. A shame...

Hi, I follow you from Italy and I must say that you helped me a lot in creating with 360 degree cameras. I have 3 questions for you: Maybe I missed a video where you explain it but is there a way to see a preview of the work through the viewers so I don't have to upload them to RU-vid every time just to understand if I'm working well? (I use MAC) second question, for a year I have been dedicating myself to creating video documents to take to sick people in hospitals who cannot travel, this Skybox VR system could be useful I think I understand, I put my videos there without having to use RU-vid VR right ? before purchasing the license (I think you have finished them) I would like to understand if this is how it works, I use this 2/3 last question, why if I watch the video on the meta browser behind me I see a bad seam while on RU-vid I don't see it? No, it still using the same engine on Quest to playback. Not using your GPU. Virtual Desktop with third party app maybe.

Hi Hugh, Very useful video, thank you! Just one question: is that possible to play media file on Quest 3 if the video is on a USB-C pendrive or external SSD? The video file size is bigger than the Quest internal storage so copying to the headset is not possible and I would like an offline,, simple solution.

Yes you can! Plug your external media on your Mac or PC - use Skybox or Virtual Desktop to set that folder into share folder. Then it will show up on your Quest 3 when using Skybox or Virtual Desktop. It is that easy. Your connection speed DOES MATTER. So think SSD vs HD - the streaming speed is affect by 1, hard drive speed / 2. WiFi speed (use WiFi 6E Router if you have it) / 3. compression ratio and decoding speed on your Quest 3. So you need to check speed in each step to find the slow down and address it. We are talking about studio building at this stage and very pro-leve stuffs using media server to build pipeline and I can go all day on that topic!

@@hughhou Thank you for the answer, Hugh. My comment was not clear, I know that it is possible to stream, but I'm looking for offline and direct solution. If there is no other device (desktop/laptop/server, no wifi, no internet). For example there is a 128gb headset and 200gb 360 video on a fast USB-C pendrive. I don't know if it is possible to 'expand' somehow the memory of the Quest with the pendrive. So I would like to plug the pendrive into the headset directly and the quest should play the video from the pendrive. Well, I thought through it :) Actually I would like to use a simple external device to expand the media storage of the Quest what is maybe not possible because in this case Meta couldn't sell the 512 gb model :) One more thing: you didn't mention the Insta360 pro 2 as an option in this video. Is it good enough to reach the Quest 3's max performance?

Thanks for your tests. However I noticed that Skybox still plays smoother on Quest 2 than on Quest 3 (not resolution wise but motion wise). I’m not sure if it’s a refresh rate issue or not but toggling the Refresh rate in Skybox settings to Auto you can replicate. Can be noticed on fast moving subjects. Can you confirm with one of your dancing videos? (it’s sad cuz I still have to carry around my Quest 2 to showcase my work). And the only player on Quest 3 that does play motion smoothly I found was Pigasus

I actually never heard of Pigasus until today. I need to test that. The Skybox VR player I have in this video is V1.6.6 - it is not out yet. They also notice the Quest 3 issue. Some of them it is on Quest 3 firmware problem. Like 120fps only support on Quest 2 but not Quest 3. av1 local decoding is funky. They are working on all the issues. So the next 2 update will fix all that. Quest 3 is still very new so software will need sometime to catch up. I will continue make more tutorials regarding all these issues here or on IG. Will keep you updated.

You are entered! Is your video in 8K does not playback correctly on RU-vid VR? I saw all my videos now are on 2160s which is what it used to be on Quest 2. And av1 is for 8K support not even 4K. So I think it is fix but still lots of problem - like VR180 support on WebXR broswer and av1 support on RU-vid VR app now Quest 3 is out. I am sure all these come in time.

On RU-vid 4k videos are vp9 codec, above is av1 (which is why only device that support av1 could play it, assuming the software gets updated)

It is in the video lol. But for your connivence, it is 8192 x 4096 @60fps for VR180 and 360, 5760 x 5760 @60fps for VR360 - a safe resolution. It can play 8K 30fps but depend on which players and it will drop frames.

Wow, Quest browser the best player. It would be an idea to analyze why playback is always so crappy, as in never completely smooth. Even with a RTX3090 this seems to be impossible. Are the players poorly written ? Do they never get enough CPU/GPU priority. Are the video's badly encoded ? Is the audio PTS causing stutter ? Framerate mismatch video, display ? All of the above ? Would be nice if a "professor" made a nice video to figure that out for us noobs. Mmmm, who would be able to do that ..... Studder free playback for everyone !!

I will be filing a DMCA takedown claim to Skybox VR with my lawyer soon. It is not legal for them to steal youtube videos. Not sure how you can be ok with this, and even advertise to the world how to stream youtube videos illegally. This hurts the content creators that put a ton of money and work into creating content.
