Orchid Whisperer can you tell how you care for your vandas becaise I m bigginer on this orchid hoby and I know many things about her I will be very preseadead if you tell how to care about her. Have a wonderful day😄😋☺😊
I recently picked up a vanda and needed some of your expertise so I'm here watching your vanda videos. I so miss your videos and your wonderful personality. xxo
Thank you so much for your awesome comment! It made my day! :) And thanks so much for watching, it's wonderful hearing from nice viewers like you! Happy growing! :)
I live on Trinidad and I recently got a pal. However it seems like I'm too excited to see progress with my phal. It just finished blooming and I'm trying a water culture. Any extra tips? The roots look white all the time
Hi Kathi-Ann! If you're going to grow in water culture, I recommend you watch my video, "What I've learned in more than a year of growing my orchids in water culture", publish date Aug 17, 2017. Some phals do well in water culture, and some don't. I've repotted many of my water culture phals to orchid grade premium moss, and they've been growing really well. Water culture isn't the easiest method to grow in, especially for beginners. Happy growing and feel free to ask questions!
Thank you for your very informative videos about vandas. I thought I would never get one, as I have neither space nor time. But I fell in love with the Rhinochiodes Bangkok Sunset, and this new vanda will arrive soon. I´m preparing for it by watching your video. :-))
Thank you for this video, that's about as close as I can get to a Vanda, my growing condition will never allow me to have one 😭 so I will enjoy watching yours grow 😁 it's beautiful thank you for sharing.
I'm a teeny obsessed with orchids. I currently have my vandas hanging from a tension rod in front of a window. I wish I could keep them there, but they are evidently perishing. I live in Florida, in an apartment (that looks more like a greenhouse than a human domicile, but I don't care about that). What I care about is that I need a different way to home the vandas, that allows more moisture and more fertilizer. Thank you for your fertilizer recipe. I have been trying to finds one that will work after TWO terrible fertilizer burn incidents. I am going to try your method. This is my question: Could you please show that little wire contraption you have there. I cannot afford to buy them, but I think I could make one if I saw how it was shaped. Thank you for what you are doing. Its very helpful and you're a delight to watch.
Hi! I think it's awesome that your apartment looks like a greenhouse! I'm sure it's beautiful! I'm glad that my fertilizer recipe works for you. Since you live in Florida, I believe it will work really well. The wire hook is actually a Christmas ornament hanger. I buy them at Michael's, but it shouldn't be hard to make. It's an S-shaped hook, and the bottom half of the S is doubled in on itself for stability. I have one in my sunroom now, I have a glass hummingbird hanging from it. I'll show it in an upcoming video. Happy growing and thanks for your sweet comment!
Hi Sherry! You have 20 vandas...WOW! That's an awesome vanda collection! You probably have every color...I'm still looking for a yellow one. They are the most splendid, majestic plants....I love growing them! Have a wonderful day and happy growing my friend! :)
Oh, wow! What a beautiful Vanda! I'm so glad that you were able to get it out of the vase - I was hoping you weren't going to have to take a hammer and break the vase! One if these days I hope I'll come across one at my local Kroger! 😊
Thank you so much Caroline! I was so happy to find this one! I'm hoping you find one soon are your local Kroger...keep me posted and let me know when you do! :) Have a great day and happy growing my friend! :)
My Vandas grow in my patio in Southern California all year long. They all have the long, thin roots hanging down and thicker roots that grow out of the sides of the baskets. I assure you the thin roots absorb just as much water as the thick ones and turn just as green. I spray them morning and night, more often in the heat of Summer. They also get half day soaks about once a month. Don't discount the importance of the thin roots. They have their purpose, too. I always take the baskets off. It requires a good pair of tin sips, but you can remove it without damaging any roots if you take your time.
Orchid Whisperer Hi, yes they are easy converts! I have one vanda and 3 vandacious orchids in water culture but no one sells then in glass vases here in U.K. you have to go out somewhere else to buy your vase. No problem I just think your grocery stores have got it right!! Happy growing friend😊😊😊😊
What I do with my Vandas is use the big glass vase like you do, but I sit the Vanda inside a nice round wooden basket, that sits in the top of the vase. It looks nice, and there's no need for the metal hooks. It also makes watering much easier, since you only have to lift up the basket. I got the baskets from Orchidmate, if you'd like to take a look. Your orchids are so beautiful!
Hi Heather! Wow, thank you for letting me know about this! You provided a piece of the puzzle that will make my life much easier! I need to prop my other vandas higher in their vases because their roots are getting quite long, and this will be an easy solution! Much easier, great solution, thank you thank you for sharing this with me! Happy growing and I appreciate you so much!
You are very welcome! I actually found this by accident. I liked the look of my Vanda in the basket with the roots hanging, but when I saw how pretty yours looked in a vase, I bought a big vase and just set it on top. :)
Here is a picture of my Vanda. Don't mind the dirty looking leaves though. I just treated all of the plants for spider mites. Another thing I did was put spanish moss down into the basket, to keep the humidity around the roots that are high up in the basket. 1drv.ms/i/s!AhdCRwJAk6f7jRuzL2idEH88rO7N
Hi Bumblebee! So nice to hear from you, you're my vanda hero! :) I think about your beautiful vandas every time I look at mine. (Now I have 4!) Thanks so much for watching and happy growing! :)
Do you favor or think that glass vases are better for the Vanda plant than plastic vases I have a vanda that was beautiful when purchased but now I am struggling to keep it. I just started your fall soak formula, I am learning a lot from you. Thank you for your videos, and by the way, I would like to see the pooch.
Hi and thanks so much for watching! I have grown in both glass and plastic vases, and I think both are fine to grow orchids in. I'm wishing you lots of success with your Vanda, and Buddy will appear in a video soon! Happy growing! :)
your vand looked gorgeous.but when I do fertilize my vandas I do it in big bucket so root does not get squeeze too much.may be you should try that too.thank you.
Hi and thanks so much for your comment! :) I really appreciate your suggestion, and you're exactly right. I actually placed this vanda in a huge glass vase, and I will do an update and show you her new home! Have a great day and thank you for watching!
Some of the thick roots on my vandas have yellow/brown/black sections but the tips are still green. Should I cut off the yellow/brown/black parts or keep them? Many thanks for your help!
Hi Cheryl and congratulations on your new vanda! It's always exciting when you get a new vanda! :) I did a detailed video on how I care for mine: "Vanda Day Video", publish date Sept 20, 2017 that may interest you. I hope you get lots of beautiful vanda blooms...have a great day! :)
Hi Usa! The hooks I'm using with my Vandas are Christmas ornament hooks I found years ago. Some of my subscribers have actually made their own. (I might give that a try, too! :) Always great hearing from you, my friend! Blessings to you!
Ah! You're lucky! The only orchids in grocery stores near me are Phals... That's quite a root system on that Vanda! Love the hooks - did you make them?
Hi Renee! I've been really happy to find these vandas in my local grocery store! :) These are actually heavy-duty Christmas ornament hooks. But they would be easy to make. They're made of very strong, thin wire. Thanks so much for watching and have a wonderful day! :)
Hi! That's a great idea! I'm going to give this a try...I balance them the best I can with stakes, and then when they grow, they become more stable in the vase. But this idea is going to be helpful to me. Thanks so much for sharing and have a wonderful day! Happy growing! :)
I bought 2 Vanda in the same glass vase. Come home soak it in a water and it has those foul smell coming from the vase. Like you did I also trim almost all of the thin roots. But I’m too scared to put them back in the vase. Too bad because I wanted to grow them in water culture. How often do you change the water of your Vanda? I’m growing some Phalaenopsis in full water culture and they’re doing fantastic.
Hi and thanks so much for watching! I have an updated Vanda video that will answer your questions, here's the link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-N6kqpqgkRW4.html Happy New Year! :)
Hello , I would like to ask if your vanda has some barks in the basket and you want to put them in water culture do you have to remove the barks first in the basket before you put in the vase. Pls advise.
Hi Lelani! This Vanda was not in bark when I bought it, it was bare-rooted as you see in this video. I wouldn't change the media if you have a Vanda in a basket in bark. Removing the bark could damage the roots. For more information on the bare-rooting and orchid and water culture, here's a link to a video that will be helpful: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YO30o-G5it8.html Thanks so much for watching and have a great day!
Help, need your input! Soaked my Vanda Friday and Saturday ... then fertilized on Sunday and currently have it in 3" of water. I was giving it a good look this morning and I discovered 3 yellow leaves at the bottom of the plant ... and also discovered a spike! I don't know whether to be concerned? What is it telling me (lower the 3" water level on the orchid... or under feeding? What are your thoughts! Anxious!
Hi Bobette! It sounds like you're soaking it too long. I only soak mine in water for 24 hours or so...I fill my vase up to right below the little basket that the roots are growing through. (I don't soak the tip of the base of the plant.) Then I fertilize it when I drain the vase. You can just spray the roots with fertilizer or place 3 or 4 inches of the fertilizer into the vase. Let them soak in the fertilizer for about 30 minutes and drain the fertilizer out of the vase. The days that it doesn't get a soak, I just spray the roots with water until they're green. I wouldn't put the 3 inches of water back in the bottom of the vase...that might be why your leaves are turning yellow as well. Keep me posted and congratulations on the spike! :) Have a great day my friend! :)
Thank you! I will cut back on my watering. I watched your video ...again regarding your watering schedule for Vandas. So helpful. Just watched your new video on your new Vanda ... so beautiful!
Salomé Guzman I’ve notice in KY they only carry them at Kroger around Valentine’s Day and not every Kroger in my town carries them. There are 3 stores and usually only 1 or 2 carries them. I usually cycle through all the stores once a week this time of year
Hi Mat! I haven't had any problems with fungus spots on my Vandas in water culture. I'm careful to keep the foliage dry...that's usually what causes the fungus spots. Happy growing!
Cut the flower spike so that vanda can use energy for root growth instead on blooming. And keep moist sphagnum moss around the vanda basket. Hope I m not late and hope it works for your vanda. Good luck.
