I have access to a plethora of scientific literature, and educational resources that where a chore to find when I was young. I live in an extremely liberal area, and I've only known 3 trans people in my entire 40 years. One lives in my neighborhood, and has bumper stickers all over her car. One was my professor in college, so I spent a lot of time with her. The last one I knew before he transitioned. I refuse to believe that people are running into trans kids left and right in a red state.

I was ambidextrous and my kindergarten teacher wanted to force me to be right-handed. My mom had been forced to be right-handed and insisted that I be encouraged to use my more dominant hand. I'm left-handed. I'm grateful.

My son was left handed and the same thing happened only I didn't realize till later. Leave children alone in their choice and support them.

I grandma was forced to change to being right handed, but kind of reverted in her older years. Forcing her to be right handed never felt natural to her. She was told it was evil when she was a kid.

Just writing or everything left handed? I agree that it is quite challenging to write left handed, since we go left to right, you have to curl your left hand up and over to see what you are writing and also to avoid smudging. I've been right handed my whole life and I've made myself learn how to do things left handed as an adult and there are some things I'm now better at left handed. So you may never actually know which hand you're better at in certain things unless you try. But going back to writing, I'd encourage everyone to do it right hand just because of the system we use.

I was ambidextrous but tended towards left handed more than right. Once my father found out he pushed me to do everything right-handed. Now, I'm pretty much right-handed. What a gift it was to be able to play sports either way, do everyday tasks either way only to have it trained out of me. But that was how my parents generation largely dealt with it. Being other than right-handed was so hard for them to wrap their brains around.

I remember a 70ish year old man coming to my class in 3rd grade to teach us about tying knots. He told us to hold a rope with our dominant hand, I grabbed it with my left, and he spent the rest of his 2 hour presentation making quips about how I should learn to use my right hand. No one, including our gen X teacher, understood why he was making such a big deal about someone being left handed.

This is the part they consistently and conveniently forget.

This is what I never get. All their values are derived from this. In their notion of hierarchy, men are above women. No one listened to me in school so I spent another 3 years there and college was no different. School and college are full of junk they can teach in order to justify it being a fulltime job instead of seasonal 4 month position which is all that it would take.

Both parties are extreme. If l identify myself as a women can I enter womens gym locker rooms and shower with them? Absolutely not! You should respect the privacy of women and spaces relegated for us only. Most gyms provide a separate changing room and shower and it's better if you use that space or a co-ed changing room. I honestly don't care if you identify as a woman and are transitioning, I still have a right to privacy and to unrobe in a space without the presence of the opposite sex.

I was nearly born deaf, if not for the tubes, but my left ear never fully recovered and is nearly useless and only good at getting infections. My right ear is super powered and can even pick up whispers from a distance.

I'm ambidextrous and have a lot of lefties in my extended family - around 30% or a bit more are lefties - and both I and my brother, who favoured his left hand, were discouraged or even punished for using our left hands at school. This was in the mid to late 1960s, and my grandmother used to cop a whack across her knuckles or have her left hand tied behind her at school to make her use her right hand, as did my uncle and all of my older left handed cousins. All it managed to achieve was that they hated school, were subjected to stress and anxiety and, with the exception of my brother who did end up using his left hand for some things but not all, went back to using their left hands once they left school. I didn't cop it as badly at school as I could use either hand equally well but I'd get into trouble when I'd forget and use my left hand for something. I was never discouraged from using either hand at home and my mother had many arguments with my brother's teachers over their attitudes to left handedness when he was little. I was very fortunate to be a part of a family that never discouraged its members from being who they were, be it left handed, right handed, ambidextrous, loving who they loved or whatever, as long as they weren't hurting anyone else. Our family isn't perfect (what family is) but it's always been inclusive, for which I'm very grateful.
