Florida has the unenviable distinction of being the skin cancer capital of the United States. While the Sunshine State offers good weather and a desirable lifestyle, excessive sun exposure often leads to skin cancer.
The good news is that there are a variety of treatments for skin cancer and pre-cancerous lesions. Your provider will determine which modality is best.
Surgical removal of the cancerous tissue is often the best treatment. Mohs Micrographic Surgery is a more sophisticated surgical technique with the highest cure rate of all skin cancer treatment methods, about 99% for the most common types of skin cancer. Mohs Micrographic surgeons are Dermatologists who are specially trained in the technique, acting as both surgeon and pathologist.
Mohs (pronounced mose, rhymes with nose) is named after Dr. Frederic Mohs, who pioneered the technique in the 1940s.
Mohs Micrographic Surgery offers the highest cure rate because the technique ensures that all of the cancerous tissue is removed, while sparing as much healthy skin as possible.
Skin cancers can be deceptively small on the surface of the skin, much like an iceberg. To remove it completely requires microscopic examination at a cellular level. The Mohs surgeon maps out the cancerous area, excises small portions of tissue and immediately examines each one under a microscope. This process is repeated until no cancerous tissue is left. Typically, the surgeon then reconstructs the surgical wound by using a variety of repair techniques. The benefits are two-fold; high cure rate and better cosmetic results for the patient.
Mohs Surgery is conveniently performed under local anesthesia in an office setting. Both Dr. Andrew T. Jaffe and Dr. Andrew Kontos are Board Certified and Fellowship-Trained by the American College of Mohs Surgeons.
Dr. W.G. Eshbaugh is a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon who has extensive experience in Mohs closures, which means that he performs closures and reconstructions of surgical wounds after the Mohs procedure is complete.

I've had many basal cell carcinomas removed, all by Mohs surgery. Mohs is an amazing technique, and the surgeons have been uniformly nice people.

if you have a strange wound, don't forget to get it checked out asap. I had a strange wound on my nose at 24 and I didn't care for 4 years. Yea, it was basal cell carsinoma. I had surgery 2 weeks ago, they took half of my nose and had to leave a huge scar on my face to cover the wound. Yea, I have 15 cm surgial scar on my face.

I have my BCC surgery 2-16-21 on my nose. Very scared and hope my nose isn't disfigured. I really don't know what I'm getting myself into. My dermatologist hasn't told me anything. Been going to him for many years so hoping for the best. When you hear you have skin cancer it's frightening.

BCC is rarely fatal. 99.9% cure rate even in late stages.

What's the scar fading cream he recommends? Once you have skin cancer: anytime you notice s "sore" esp. on your face, that last more than 4-5 days, doesn't heal up or heals some but comes right back, don't wait, have it checked!

Although a plastic surgeon may be appropriate for the reconstruction following Mohs surgery, the grand majority can be reconstructed by the Mohs surgeon. In fact, most Mohs surgeons perform their own reconstruction and most patients should expect that the Mohs surgeon perform the reconstruction.

I had a BCC removed from my outer lip area (between nose and lip). It's an area very easily overlooked when applying sunscreen as are the ears and eyebrows.

I heard from a person who just had this done that they did not put him to sleep, the needle hurt, so bad, he heard them talking about everything, and he felt the blood running down his face. This is scary as hell to me I have to have this MOHS surgery done and I’m petrified. Can anybody give me any comfortingfacts please respond.

Sorry but that sounds ridiculous. Yes the anaesthetic is a sharp scratchy sensation but no worse than if you've ever had dental surgery and this stage is over with in the blink of an eye. From there on in you don't feel a thing and bleeding is minimal as the surgeon cauterizes the blood vessels. Worth every minute to get rid of a cancerous lesion.

Why I asked this question why why why can’t they push you to sleep for this surgery? I have PTSD and I have basal cell cancer in the corner of my nose. I am scared out of my wits.

To minimize scarring they remove the cancer in stages and it can take two or even three passes. The skin they remove on each occasion is analysed to make sure by the end of the process all traces of cancer have been removed. It wouldn't be practical to keep putting you to sleep then waking you up again as each pass only takes about half an hour!

But really can dermatologists perform such operations of plastic surgery? Is this legit?!
@sarahbrennan1342
@sarahbrennan1342 3 года назад
Yes.... they train to reconstruct ( plastic surgery) so one doesn’t have to wait to go to a plastic surgeon.. therefore they won’t be left with a hole etc... a skin flap or a skin graft is usually done

MOHS surgeons (in the UK at least) are dermatologists with extra specialist training. Gold standard.
