More than two years after the Oxford High School massacre, a historic trial begins this week for Jennifer and James Crumbley, as prosecutors seek to do what has never been done before: hold parents criminally responsible for a deadly mass school shooting.
After months of legal feuding and mudslinging by lawyers, it will finally be up to a jury to decide this unprecedented and significant issue. Legal experts stress that the first critical task at hand, jury selection, could ultimately decide the case.

Is there something wrong with the defense lawyer? Her intonation is so bizarre. She sounds so disingenuous and like she is reading from a piece of paper that someone else wrote for her. This so-called “mother” knew her son was having mental problems, and decided to go out and buy him a gun. She did this four days before the mass murders. Four days.

Defense lawyer: "Mrs. Crumbley found the drawing her son had made about how to best shoot a person to death with his gun. She immediately texted her husband EMERGENCY and left work to go straight to the school. She got a meeting with the principal and a student counsellor, and they all talked to the shooter about their concerns with him wanting to shoot people to death with his gun. The shooter said the drawing was fake and he didn't want to shoot people with his gun." Also defense lawyer thirty seconds later: "When the shooter started shooting people at school with his gun, Mrs. Crumbley had no idea what was happening. It wasn't anywhere on her radar that it could be her son shooting people with his gun."

Yeah. I’m thinking this might be the defense attorney first jury trial or something. It’s awful. I feel inadequate counsel could be a reason for appeal. EDIT…..I’m still watching. The defense just gets worse. “Your honor, may we approach” (judge clearly thinking..l.”what now?!”)….”ummmm, …..ok”. Is the defense attorney a public defender? @AriesRising4444 8 месяцев назад
I think you mean "leading the witness " or asking leading questions instead of "coaching". It is the opposing counsel's job to object by standing and saying "Objection, your honor. Counsel is leading the witness." Then the judge will rule on the objection and have the attorney either withdraw or re-word the question or leave it in the record. The defense probably does not care about this testimony and does not want to prolong it. It is already a part of the basics of the case and will not affect whether the defendant is guilty. Trial strategy.

I agree, the prosecution was just really... sloppy? They kept asking very obvious hearsay and speculating questions and then arguing when it was objected, even though the questions made weak points anyway. Good lawyers know to how to pick their battles and move on quickly. That's not to say the defense was better; that opening statement was laughably stupid, and at one point, the lawyer even had a Liar Liar moment of "I object because it's devastating to my case!"

I’m all about the 2nd amendment but I’m 15 and my dad has a FFL. All of our guns are locked up. I don’t have access to them or our ammo. I’ve never wanted to kill anyone else but if I did, I could not use a gun because I could not get to it. She should have followed the law. It’s there for a reason.
@RhondaPhillips-o2p
@RhondaPhillips-o2p 8 месяцев назад
Also this trial hasn't even mentioned the part of if the gun was locked and he stole it or if it was unlocked and available to him. So don't say she should've followed the law when you don't know if she did or not. I'm thinking she IS negligent, but like they told the jury, I will wait to see all the proof from both sides before I come to a conclusion of what when where how why and who's at fault.

There are already gun laws in place that a licensed gun owner is responsible for properly securing the weapon. They broke that law. Add in the negligence of knowing their son was mentally ill and not only left the gun unsecured, but actually gave him a gun as a present. They are liable. We don't need stricter gun laws. My god that defense attorney is so unprofessional. I'm currently at the 5 hour mark, and the prosecutor and witness are gloving up to handle evidence. The defense leans her elbow on the desk and rests her chin in her palm. It's such a rude and condescending gesture. If I were on the jury I would find for the prosecution just because of the defense's behavior. I know that's not how it's supposed to work, but I just cannot stand that woman.

Their home, vehicles, life savings and their possessions... Bills haven't been paid, credit cards are overdue and these parents have nothing left to take from, or home to return... Either way, the system utterly destroyed these parents’ lives ... This is not justice! The prosecutor’s ominous plot is darker than her own shadow...!

I didn't think that there son had a license the gun was bought by parents and given as a gift but even when kids aren't given a gun by parents if the want one they find ways of getting them on the street or from friends but again if parents have guns they need to make sure that their kids can't get to them anyway at .I don't think that these parents did that and they didn't have any sense of their kid having any issues in which there were signs of and they should have noticed and had them addressed! Parents of minor children are legally responsible for them and their actions. They neglected to do that by ignoring their duty to parent their child AND supplied their minor child, who was having a mental crisis, with a weapon that they knew could cause death. That's gross negligence that resulted in death which is the legal definition of involuntary manslaughter.

This trial is important. It has nothing to do with the 2nd amendment. Rather, it is about common sense gun laws that our legislators intentionally fail to address. Laws that are necessary because of irresponsible gun owners. For something this deadly, that many happily put in the hands of children, there are very few regulations to protect, not only the child, but the rest of society.

@@shanks4391 I think there's a difference between strict and common sense. People seem to confuse gun safety laws with somehow violating 2nd amendment. The sale of lawn darts was banned in our country because of all the accidental deaths. But loads of accidental shootings, didn't even result in requiring companies to make their weapons child resistant.
@shanks4391
@shanks4391 8 месяцев назад
@@MrDuane-lr8dm I'm just saying that in this case stricter gun laws wouldn't have made a difference because they went against both gun safety laws and common sense.
