Couldn't let this one go... I found the parents of Frank. If you'd like to see how and continue to build the family, join Aimee's Crew and catch our next livestream! ru-vid.comyEj31gb-RuA?feature=share

Thanks for this fabulous demonstration. I tend to build out everything on one person and then go to the next. I really like how you jump back and forth among people to make sure things are connected properly. Also I like the way you validate the census information to make sure you have the right person.😊

Great video and demonstration. I got a little distracted as I lived on Willard St. as a young child. I had to go check and see if this was the same Willard St. It was close, but not the same I was on Willard Street in North Hollywood. Also, my mother's maiden name was Smith -

That was an awesome demonstration of building a tree from scratch! I've thought about doing something like that with someone from a document that isn't related but they've been found in other sources together with my relative. Looking forward to getting something like this done!

Thx Aimee. Great vid. Would you look at the suggested tree hints that you ignored initially if you’re stuck to give you clues from other people’s trees that have same people? Also do you make you’re live episodes available to watch later where you deal with brick walls in your tree for Aimee’s Crew members for when they don’t live in same time zone?
@AncestryAimee
@AncestryAimee 6 месяцев назад
Yes, I would check trees to see what they have. But I would be careful about it. All the past live episodes are available for Aimee's Crew members now.

I love genealogy vids, but I found it is totally different approach when you tried genealogy outside US. There are not enough digitalized records and just a minimum amount are indexed. I made three trees on italian records just from scratch only checking birth, marriage and death records book by book (there are no census records digitalized and available records are not indexed, so I have to check image by image). Sooooo.... I like to check online trees when I find one. I use them as a hint, not as a match: you just need to check if the date is there and look for the record to double check the info. When you can save yourself a lot of hours searching manually on record images (not idexed) it is nice.

You do need to work with different strategies outside the U.S. Thanks for sharing your experiences! I really appreciate it!

About the Shoebox: is there any way to organize it or search it via Ancestry? Once you have 100 or more items there, it's useless. I have resorted to printing any data that I'm tempted to put in the Shoebox, because at least I can organize sheets of paper by name or family. And eventually recycle the trails that don't work out.... love your work, and following along is great!
@AncestryAimee
@AncestryAimee 6 месяцев назад
Thanks Susan! I don't think there is a way to search the shoebox. They are, by default, listed in order by date you added them. I think it's designed as more of a holding place, not a permanent storage - it's better to link the records to individuals in the tree. Great question!

I had to bail at the one hour point. You kept messing up dates. I'm sure you get them right if you're not doing a livestream, but it makes me crazy. I still got a lot of good tips for using Ancestry. I've been chasing my family history for 45 years. And I'm obsessive about dates. I remember birthdays going back six generations because my brain works that way. Anyway, thanks for the good video.

I noticed on Frank P. Smith you had the period after the P for his middle name in your tree. From what I have experienced, that period limits the search. It’s better to not put the period, rather leaving the P sort of open for possibilities. A suggestion is to leave off the punctuation as such!

Learning a lot watching the replay. don't know if it will show up in the chat but you assumed residence date for Draft Card was 1914. Frank was born in 1918 and the Draft Card is for WWII not WWI On a different note-I like how you ignore the hints from other trees!

Thank you for this video. I had a few questions. Do you use the alternate name fact? If no, why? Wouldn't you be able to add the married name as an alternate name? Or for those names with different spellings or transcription errors? Do you download the images of let's say the census and stuff? Please do more tutorials on photos and one on Family Tree Maker. I'm thinking of switching over from RootsMagic 9. Like to know if it would be worth my time since FTM is so expensive. How does FTM work with FamilySearch? Does FTM have LDS facts?
@AncestryAimee
@AncestryAimee 6 месяцев назад
I do the alternate name fact. I use it for other names I find or for nicknames. I don't use it for the married name or for transcription errors. I don't bother worrying about transcription errors. I know the married name is evident in the spouse's name. If I don't know the husband's full name, I just add a spouse with the known surname or last name. I don't download census images - they are everywhere (on all sites) and I don't expect them to disappear. Other records I do download though for my direct line of lines I'm working on. I'll add your suggestions to my list. Family Tree Maker doesn't work with FamilySearch though, so keep that in mind if you are looking to switch. There are other programs that do work with FamilySearch.

The golf article is in fact interesting as it used name Oxender. If it’s the same person, maybe they were divorced.

If you don’t have a computer you use what you have. The strategy of how to weed through the records works on either device. Good luck!

Is there a pro/con to using the Census fact for census records as opposed to the Residence fact? Besides it automatically putting census records as a Residence fact.
@AncestryAimee
@AncestryAimee 4 месяца назад
That’s a terrific question. I don’t know why it automatically does that but I will say when you click search at the top right it takes into account the residence facts but I’m not sure it would a census facts. Meaning it uses the residences in the search function.

Mom Stella,'s husband could have been serving in the military. WWII started in September of 1939 so I would have looked at that military registration card again to see what date it was. He could have very well been gone off to war during that time.

I often make fast and dirty trees for all sorts of reasons. I agree that if you are not sure about one record DO NOT ADD IT or your hints will change and often not for the better. 🩵
