Epic video in many ways. Like something out of a James Bond movie, chilling on a yacht with a girl, probably sipping a martini, and there goes a massive volcanic eruption off the starboard bow. A good day to be alive.

@@davidpinontoan3429 I was thinking the same thing, a rough estimation can be made. The explosion happened at 7 seconds and still hasn't arrived at 45 seconds after that point at the end of the video. This must mean that, with the average speed of sound at 343m/s that the eruption was at least 15.4km (About 9.5 miles) away. Which is quite a long way but still believable, and probably a good choice, in the circumstances....

@@Sunrosediaries Not sure if that is a boom or just wind blowing into the mic of the camera to be honest. Distance _would_ have an impact on volume, but that is a BIG explosion, and that seems far too quiet to be associated with it. It could be, but I personally have my doubts. Edit: For example, look at videos of the Beirut explosion, the shockwave was still breaking windows at 6 miles. If this sound reached at 28 seconds, then that would be about 7km (5 miles away). I would have thought it would be louder if that were the case.

The video ended before the sound reached them, the Volcano was about 9-12 miles away, and sound travels a mile in about five seconds.

@Gillie Monger Fair enough, but many cities were built before they knew there was a major tectonic fault line. But over volcano "island" with no room to escape seems a recipe for disaster.

Because it has been active for much of the last 2,000 years and its eruptions are visible for long distances at night, it is known as the "Lighthouse of the Mediterranean"

That's not exactly whats happening. These particles are super charged and extremely hot, notice that the lighting happens where the friction is actually the least? Its probably due to the height the cold was and changing from pyroclastic heat to super cold vapor and the magnetic properties brought in by being so hot

I’m in the US, and a friend and I were in a restaurant eating a Stromboli. I explained to him that Stromboli was an island off of Italy, and he didn’t believe me! Said I was making it up! My theory is, people in Stromboli folded their pizza in half to keep the ashes out?

@@easypeasy2938 I saw a documentary about Stromboli a few years back, and there is a village on one side of the volcano. All of the houses have metal roofs, because ashes are constantly falling, maybe some days more than others. And every night, they all sit outside and watch the fireworks as lava spews from the volcano all the time. Again, I’m sure it varies. Imagine living on the slope of an active volcano! It’s a fishing village, so I guess when something like this eruption happens, they can jump on their boats and make a quick escape.

The Stromboli is not an explosive volcano like others, it just barf stuff every now and then (sometimes it does explode with more power, though), and always in the same direction, quite safe for one of the most active volcanos.

Yep. Friction from the micro-particles in the rising ash column rub violently against each other, creating vast static charges, which discharge as lightning. Volcanic lightning, especially at night, can be really spectacular.

My life kinda runs along those lines anyway. I'd just be like "well that figures" then look for a piece of beach that isn't black or red and start digging myself a hole to fall asleep in then wait for the gasses to take me. With my luck I'd wake up the next day, not dead, but hungry. After surviving the volcano, I'd die of dehydration, slowly over a week or so. On the last day before death, I would be rescued by a passing ship. Two days later it would capsize and I would be eaten by sharks.

The eruption start at 0:08 video is 0:56 long. The sound at average temperatur flow at 343 m/s, so calculating 343 m/s x 48 s = 16,432 m /16, 4 km. By scale 10 florr building is less than milimeter from 25 km., So yeah i wish video little bit longer perhaps around 1.30

Stromboli has been in continuous eruption for the past 5,000 years. I have similar footage from when me and the hubby sailed past on a cruise ship in 2019.

Since it's recorded from a distance, sound will reach much later than the visual.

I remember, I was in Antigua in Guatemala a few years ago. There was this hotel on a hill nearby, and in the valley the city itself. On the other side, the active volcano Fuego. Every night I'd have a coffee, watching the lava erupt. When there was a really big one, it took around 30 seconds for the rumble to reach us. It was scary and magnificent. Not too long ago there were sadly casualties because of an eruption...

St helens was a lot worse, the noise shattered windows 150 miles away, but was completely silent to everyone nearby

What I found to really be scary is that it took about 20 seconds for the pyroclastic flow to race down 3000 ft to sea level.

What's interesting about mt rainier is that size wise, it's about as large as mt everest, as the surrounding mountains are about 10k feet below the mountains peak. Tldr it has the same prominence as everest, so yes, it is extremely large
