We have the same problem in Europe and between us and Africa we have the Mediterranean sea and people cross it in rafts risking their lives for the prospect of better lives. Do you think a wall will stop anyone? They will just dig tunnels, or use climbing tools to overcome it. If you want to stop the exodus you need to deal with the root of the problem and promote some kind of cooperation with the origin countries. Help them develop, give a viable future to those persons in their home countries and they will stop flocking to your shores.

I was nine years old in 1970, but my parents didn't discuss things like the Manson murders _at all_ around me and my older brother. It wasn't that they didn't allow us to see the news, as we watched everything broadcast about the Apollo missions and the moon landing, and I still geek out over what an impact that had on me as a child. This is the first I've heard about Nixon's part in almost getting Manson freed because of his mouth. When Watergate scandal occurred, I didn't understand what it was about but I sure saw how my parent's attitude changed. They voted for him, but once they found out that he was, indeed a crook. They were done, and they didn't like Ford because he pardoned him. Republicans sure have changed! I love Lawrence, Rachael, Ari et al for bringing us these history lessons that tie right into modern day. Another person I've learned a great deal from is historian and professor, Heather Cox Richardson. I highly recommend her channel and video series that goes in depth of how Republicans went from the "party of Lincoln" to the current bizarre cult of personality. BTW, she is _not_ a Democrat. She is an historian who values facts and presents them without spin.

Now that Lawrence has reminded us of Nixon's Manson Trial faux-pas, the comparison between THIS former President and the current one just doubled. Nixon already RESIGNED the office rather than subject the country to his criminal trial--or avoided recorded proof of a crime. Now we see that he was capable of apologizing and CORRECTING his mistaken statement, something Trumputin is genetically, or by upbringing, INCAPABLE of doing, EVER. He has yet to apologize for his statements on the Central Park five. That's a guilty verdict reached by someone who has never been a judge or even a jury member on that trial, but at the time was not even a politician, let alone President. His assessment as a private citizen, though perfectly legal to hold privately, should NEVER have even been broadcast to the country.

Most experts will tell you that Nixon actually out performed Kennedy in the debate, but Kennedy has make up on and Nixon was sweating under the hot studio lights, and looked weak, while Kennedy looked strong, young, and handsome, and that's how Kennedy "won" the debate. Reagan's staff said a lesson they learned was that no matter what Reagan said on the campaign (and he said a lot of STUPID things) it did not matter as long as he looked good, was in front of a good crowd, and had lots of flags behind him. He spoke of how they would panic when Reagan said things such as that trees pollute more than cars, and he got mocked in the media - but his poll numbers went UP. His own economic adviser called Reagan's plan "Voodoo economics", but it did not matter. The truth is that I think voters would make better choices if they NEVER saw the candidates - audio and print only.
