Volkswagen introduced the eighth-generation GTI last year with fresh styling, more interior space, and 241 horsepower, making it the most powerful GTI in its 40 years on U.S. roads. It is one of the few new models available today that comes standard with a six-speed manual gearbox. The GTI is an absolute joy to drive when pushing hard through a twisty mountain road; even with front-wheel drive, it puts the power down smoothly and confidently. At the same time, this sporty VW works perfectly for routine driving: The ride is comfortable and quiet, there's plenty of cargo space for luggage or other gear, and a rating of 34 mpg on the highway is certainly respectable.
The GTI features a high-tech interior with a configurable driver display and a large central display screen. Higher trims get a larger screen, but volume and tuning knobs are eliminated, making interacting with the infotainment system a bit tricky. The interior is surprisingly roomy and comfortable, and the plaid sport seats are a nice throwback to the original GTI. The front seats provide good support, even on a long drive. Rear seats are larger than expected but would be cramped for three passengers. Competitors to the Golf GTI include the Honda Civic Si, Hyundai Veloster N, Subaru WRX, and the Mini Clubman John Cooper Works Classic.
The Volkswagen Golf GTI remains true to its legacy, combining the versatility of a four-door hatchback with excellent performance and handling. In addition to its sporty driving characteristics, the GTI excels as an everyday driver with a comfortable interior and excellent fuel economy.
After a complete redesign for the 2022 model year, the Golf GTI remains unchanged for 2023. A 40th-anniversary GTI is added to the lineup, slotting between the entry-level S and SE trims.
The 2023 Volkswagen Golf GTI is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. It's paired to a six-speed manual or optional seven-speed automatic transmission with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. This is more power than the previous generation, and it makes the Golf GTI an even more immersive drive. It's aggressive, with no hesitation when you hit the gas. The automatic transmission shifts smoothly, but those who prefer the control of a manual will find the six-speed a joy. Handling is crisp and responsive with minimal body roll, especially on tight, winding roads. This car is designed for people who like to drive. Also of note is the 10.25-inch instrument cluster with three views and 21 viewing options that let the driver organize the display.
Comparatively, the Subaru WRX offers two engines, both with more horsepower than the Golf GTI. The Hyundai Veloster has less horsepower except in the Veloster N trim. The Honda Civic also provides less horsepower, except for the Type R model.

The GTI and for that matter the Golf across the line has always been on of my favorite cars because it leaves Wabbit Twax. They’re like pets that you drive in. There are two cars whose steering and entire feel is so distinct that I could identify them if you blindfolded me and had them drive around an empty parking lot or in the middle of a desert. Those two cars are the VW Golf and the Porsche 911. For those of us who don’t expect to buy a 911 there’s the GTI. It’s a hoot!

I’ve been driving a Golf TDI for two weeks. I love it. Quiet, smooth, and easy to drive. It’s getting 51 mpg even with autobahn cruising at 86 mph. The touch sensitive temperature controls are extremely annoying. I have to look at the screen to see how the finger swiper is responding. Fortunately there is volume control on the steering wheel. The interface itself is fine. Not great but not bad. Now I want a Golf.

I think the extended length of the MK8 GTI takes away from the sportier look of previous generations. The lack of a two door option doesn't help convince people that it's a performance car either. Where it lacks in looks, it makes up for in performance and quality though. I have a base 2 door MK6 that I've owned since new and I'm thrilled it's lasted me 10 years and 205K+ miles with very very few repairs.
@donr8773
@donr8773 8 месяцев назад
I agree on the added length and lack of 2 door most definitely making it somewhat less sportier looking. But I hadn’t really noticed the size, I’ve gotten used to everything being 4 doors. I’ve been looking at the best older Golfs. One to trick out. Sounds like your vintage might be the one.

Get a weighted shift knob i just changed mine and omg shifting is to much smoother and shorter Im short and i personally thought the gear shifter was way to tall which made for a uncomfortable throw and a long mushy feeling shift but all changed now! Love the car my first manual learning was rough but i got it down still cant heal toe tho
@Fmandan77
@Fmandan77 8 месяцев назад
I would agree that the manual shifter in these feels too light and cheap. It's begging for something for substantial and reassuring. I'm sure the transmission performs just fine though.

The capacitive buttons have lots of feedback Reviewers are making a huge deal out if it because they don’t spend a couple of hours just getting used to it And it literally took me like 2 hours I love the whole interface

I’ve had my Mk8 GTI (2022) for 13 months and love it . The haptic buttons are great and touch screen is great as well. Everyone that complains about it , is because they do not own one. After some mods and a tune, I’m at 363 wHP and 388 wTQ It’s a little beast

Waiting for the refresh “mk 8.5” where by some hope they make physical push buttons, make the infotainment as responsive (not worse) than how the mk 7.5 was, and possibly make the Harmon/Kardon system have as much bass that the mk 7 Fender system had. Or even better, bring back Dynaudio!!! 😮😢

I own a 2017 MK7 GTI S 6spd. I love that these cars come in manuals, but, just like the MK7/7.5 gen, the MK8 also suffers from a weak clutch from the factory. If you never plan on tuning this car, the clutch will be perfectly fine for well over 100k miles, but once you tune the car, and drive it somewhat aggressively, you will need to replace the clutch sooner than later. You might think "a clutch upgrade is no big deal" but clutches on this car have two bad things about them. They aren't cheap and the tob/slave design is very poor. Due to the bad tob/slave design, you will be at risk of having them fail sooner than later, putting you bank account even more in the negative for what is a "commuter car design." So, if you choose to get the 6spd, just leave the car un-tuned. If you plan on tuning the car, buy the DSG. You will save a lot more money in the long term.

Compared to those vehicles mentioned, it's a no-brainer in my opinion. None come CLOSE to the overall quality and refinement of the GTI. The negatives mentioned in this review about the controls are non-existent and are just the usual pundit commentary against anything traditional in automotive. I own one, you'd have to come with an army to pry it from my hands.
