Watch This Artist Create A Mirror Using Glass And Silver Nitrate

This chemical solution turns glass into mirrors. It's made by artist David Smith in Torquay, Devon. He's been working with glass for 33 years. So how does it work?
The clear liquid is silver nitrate. The glass is first coated with a bonding solution. The silver nitrate reacts with the bonding solution and the silver deposits evenly over the glass.

to be more precise, silver nitrate is added to ammonia, and the bonding solution is a mixture of lye and sugar, the lye-sugar mixture frees the silver from the silver nitrate and it forms silver metal which coats the glass

Sup Edward. It might not specifically be that method, as you can use other reducing agents.
@EdwardTriesToScience
@EdwardTriesToScience Год назад
indeed, but sugar is usually cheapest and most available, glycerin and other stuff can be used but they are more exotic and some pretty hazardous
@amosz5726
@amosz5726 Год назад

i dont particularly think they would be using hydrazine, ive tried with different concentrations of sugar and the stronger it is the faster the silver plates out, but the quality is also lower, the solution he is pouring already has the characteristic brown tint of silver suspension, in the clip where he prepares it he combines two solutions, one probably silver nitrate and the other ammonia (as the formed silver oxide redissolves), the glass is also coated with "bonding solution" so it's probably some mixture of surfactants, on contact with the silver solution it starts to silver so the solution probably has some sort of reducing agent, the solution could be self made (where using sugar would be convenient and cheap) or commercial stuff which depending on manufacturer could contain other stuff like glycerin or a mixture of reducing agents, ascorbic acid, dextrose etc. but if the solution he is using is made by himself then i'd be on it being sucrose, fructose, dextrose or some other reducing sugar as its cheap and effective

@@EdwardTriesToScience Formaldehyde is totally possible, but also glucose is way more likely than sucrose which has not been hydrolyzed yet

Intermediate chemistry. -Tollens Reaction(test for reducing sugars)->the way this mirror is made. Deionised water is used because the reducing sugar will reduce the 1+(valency of the element) metals in to 0(elemental form) ->bonding solution-Some hydroxide(KOH,NaOH...)+Reducing sugar(Dextrose,Galactose...) ->Silver-Silver Nitrate(AgNO3) The reducing sugar in a basic enviroment reduces the Ag+ ion to Ag° (elemental silver) thus percipitating silver on the glass surface.The percipitated silver can be washed away with a strong oxidizing agent.

@@teribernardo2861 He provided the name of the reaction. You'll only consider it credible if he performs a demonstration? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nGmxHLHyUPc.html The question here is in what order are the ingredients being used, or are there any additional ingredients. The glass worker who posted this video probably either considers this information "proprietary" and is unwilling to share his entire procedure, or he wants people to do a little thinking and investigating for themselves. I think one important clue he does give, as this reaction depends on heat, is the need for a substantially warm room. A cursory search will probably reveal a suitable method, failing that, there are only a few components to this reaction, I'm sure it wouldn't take much experimenting. If I were curious, one search term I can think of offhand is 'how to make a first surface / front surface mirror"

@@WaffleStaffel oh, hell hell no ! making mirrors with silver nitrate is hardly a proprietary tech ! we've been doing it for literally hundreds of years ! and Alberto s Martin is right..Tollens reagent is used to test for reducing sugars, some are , some aren't hence the test. In chem, it's done in a test tube, it turns the inside of the T.T into a glass mirror...and you can use a whole shit load of different reagents and concentrations to get the same results, so, no need for proprietary la de da here....even a kid can do it...

Stannous chloride. (Tin II chloride) That must be applied prior on surfaces like acrylic. The actual "bonding" agent (reducer) is what makes the silver harden on the surface, that is sugar or formaldehyde
