I hope this video inspires you to paint and clears up some confusion about granulating watercolors. There have been a lot of pricy granulating sets for sale lately and they are beautiful but before you buy see what you already have, you probably have some colors that will get you started!
Granulation is the textured effect some watercolors have in wet washes where sedimentary pigments separate and settle out from other colors. It is currently a very popular look. Ultramarine, cerulean, mars black, cobalt colors, and some cadmium have this quality and you might already have them! I have a blog post here that shows swatches of my DIY granulating palette using watercolors I already had: thefrugalcrafter.wordpress.co... You can use the chart and pigment info to compare what you have that may work before purchasing more paint. Don't get overwhelmed, painting should be fun!
Tips for enhancing granulation:
1. Use heavily sized paper.
2. Paint in very wet washes.
3. Let paint dry naturally undisturbed (don't fuss with it or you will just stir the paint up again LOL!)
Resources:
A little Creative on Etsy sells Renesans Tubes at an affordable price and you can save 10% with the coupon code FRUGAL10
www.etsy.com/listing/64310558...
My favorite Rensans granulating colors are:
Renesans #22 Bordeax Cadmium PR108
Renesans #25 Maganase Violet PV16
Renesans #26 Ultramarine Violet PV16, PB29
Turner also has some nice granulating colors: Ultramarine Blue Deep, Mars Black and Mars Violet (it's more of a brown FYI) and you can snag then for $5 a 15ml tube when they are on super sale at Jerrys: www.jerrysartarama.com/turner...
Warning, they are 3x the price on amazon and I would not recommend paying that much because you could get Schminke for that LOL!
Schminke has a full line of granulating watercolors that are lovely, albeit expensive but if you are interested Blick has a good price: shrsl.com/36lut
Masha's watercolors are the ones in the wooden palette I used and they are gorgeous. They are handmade and expensive but lovely nonetheless. You can see an unbox and swatch of this palette here: • The Fanciest Watercolo... and visit Masha's shop here: www.etsy.com/shop/MashasWater...
Here are the Mimik faux squirrel brush I use: amzn.to/34yLHNK
Here are the talkon ones durable and good for agitating paint and they are good for painting with too! They won't hold as much water as the Mimiks tho: amzn.to/3LcIdSb

I have the best results when I use granulation as "seasoning" vs all over the entire painting. Backgrounds are fabulous. Rocks, tree trunks.. a sky... the side of a building. Here and there vs everywhere.

Some of the best advice I could give if you are just starting out….limit your colors to the basics and learn how to mix your own paint…using too many premixed colors can be overwhelming and you lose the chance to know how much you can get from maybe 6-8 colors at the most….and use a paper that is tough enough to stand up to a lot of water and layers…if possible, start with real cotton paper at least 140lb …get some books and learn color theory and learn how to sketch….also when you look at your subject, really look at the contrast of darks and lights…those are a few of the things that i think are important to start with…and always remember to look at what color an object really is ….not just what we think a colors, like blue or green are…of you really look you can see what colors you need to mix to get the color of a sky, or the green of plants and grasses…sometimes they are not even blue or green…lol….good luck on your journey and remember to always focus on having fun…even when the going seems tough…you’ll get there

Such a wonderful video and painting examples! I avoided paint that granulated when I first started in watercolors! I loved flat areas of color with no variation! I have enjoyed using granulation for natural scenes with textures of nature. I would also suggest if you want to make your own granulating paints look at how many pigments used in the paints you already have! I also suggest rough press surface papers even more than cold press paper. Lindsay you have a lovely manner and your a joy to watch and listen to in your videos! Thank you.

Love, love, love your painting videos! So relaxing watching you paint such beautiful artwork! Would really love prints of these for happy color inspiration Lindsay!😎 So interesting about the water and paint reaction with granulation! I wonder if the minerals differ greatly in your area because the hard water here in Southern California does amazing granulation! I once used Daniel Smith Cascade green on a glass plate and left it and when I came back there was the most beautiful color separation and granulation on the plate I could’ve hung it as art! Thanks so much for all the great info on paint brands to try for granulation without the big prices! I’ve been dying to try so many of these as well as the interference and Duochrome paint but don’t have a huge budget for them!🥳🤩

Be a Big Spender! Buy, in the drug or grocery store, 1 gallon each of DISTILLED and SPRING water. Experiment with each, and find out which you prefer. You'll never have nasty surprises again! My city water is heavily treated with chemicals, and I worried about what would happen to the paper down the line, so I never let anything other than distilled water touch the paper. Thanks, Lindsay, for such a great post. Thank heaven for people like you! I've bookmarked this!

ABSOLUTELY SUPERB !! Having after three years of learning water colour thunk I have found my own style which is loose large semi-abstract landscapes, even been offered an amount for one I was just gob-smacked by. I currently use M.Graham as they don't go rock hard like the others do but not many of them granulate which I really like. Been spending some time and money on D. Smiths and Schincke and find when I use them, no way do I get the effects people seem to do on here and kind of expensive. This video and your additional written material was an absolute minefield of really useful info, tips and saving money, especially when even trying not to waste this subject can so easily for practising purposes. Please do far more on this subject.

Invest in some nice standard granulating single pigment paints. You can mix whatever you want.. not only the colors the brands offer but hundreds of others... plus use the pigments alone. Granulators together make "super granulators". Granulators with normal staining shades give you awesome color separation. Much better investment. Most valuable IMO: PBK11, PBR11, PB29, PG18, PG50 or PB28, PR233, PB35 or 36, Buff Titanium. There are many others but these 8 plus your normal palette will give you a ton of possibilities and these are used the most commonly to mix the convenience colors. They are made by most brands but granulation varies among them so be sure to look at some good swatches before deciding on brand for EACH pigment. In general WN professional, Daniel Smith, Roman Szmal, and Schmincke have the best granulators.

Hi, Lindsay… I loved this video! Whatever editing changes you did, it worked. I enjoyed the real time, I enjoyed hearing your commentary on what you were doing, I enjoyed watching the watercolors do their thing, I loved watching that first thirsty paintbrush do its magic - what a beautiful brush! I gained a higher appreciation for granulating watercolors after watching this as I tend to enjoy bright, fluid, soft, flowing colors and found it difficult to enjoy the rougher, earthy result of the granulation. I can see how they are necessary to achieve the end result of your beautiful work. Thanks for your extra time and energy to make this an excellent tutorial video. Have a wonderful weekend! 🙂

I really liked this tutorial. It was really helpful to me when you talk about colors that we may already have that we can use. I’m a beginner and I have limited colors. I love water color painting and these tutorials give me hope.

I have very carefully picked who I subscribe to. I did pick you as one, and enjoy listening to you. This video was wonderful. You made me feel confident to try watercolors and experiment with techniques. I always wanted to be a fashion designer and illustrator, or even an Art teacher, growing up in NY, but moving as a HS Junior to another state. I was accepted to FIT, and Pratt, a lifelong dream, but declined when mY Father said I needed to travel home each day, rather than dorm in NY. So I pursued education in the Medical field as I could stay local. I played with art, but with a busy career and kids, not as much as I’d like. Fast forward to the last years, and divorce, and re marriage and a late life child, and I am “allowed” to play. I do scrapbooks, cards, jewelry, gel printing and experiment, experiment, and experiment. I did get a second degree in Interior Design when my youngest was very little. I am sorry that I still would love to go back to school again for art, butI am old, not dead. I want to learn and play and after all these years, find out who I am. You seem to pave the way for that, this video being amazing. I hoped my son would love art as much as I do, but it’s clear at 15 that thou he has had lots of art classes, he will not be pursuing that as a career. I do enjoy love learning from him about different perspectives and techniques they do in school. I think ART is in your blood, and no matter how much blood letting you do, it stays. Passion runs deep, hugs to you as I sit in bed at 2 PM in an ice frozen Texas home…..♥️😊♥️
