I studied in Venice last summer so this felt very nostaligic :) one of my core memories is getting stuck in the center (our uni and accommodation was on an island) at night with about ten students and a professor after we went for dinner in the POURING RAIN and even our professor got lost so he had to ask a guy in a restaurant for directions to San Zaccaria where we needed to take our vaporetto back to the uni. My course there was on linguistic landscaping (basically any form of language within the landscape, so street signs, grafitti, street art but even tattoos or stickers could count) and it was extremely interesting to discover what people in Venice cared enough about to put on the streets if that makes sense. We learned a lot about the inhabitants of Venice and like you said, those people living above the busy streets do not enjoy all the noise. You could really tell in the posters and street art too how they think Venice has become too touristy and they especially are concerned about AirBnb because every time an apartment or house gets free, it immediately gets sold to some wealthy AirBnB owner, which means people who actually live in the city have less and less opportunities to stay there and a lot of people have moved. They're also scared of losing their culture since a lot of shops have gotten replaced either by tourist traps or by chains. It was super fascinating to learn about this stuff tbh and also made me realise we often have this romanticised idea of Venice as the perfect dreamy city, based on images of a bridge and a gondoletta but there is way more going on there. My group in the course actually researched the linguistic landscaping in a part of Venice called Sant'Elena, which is more of a residential area, with a park and a football stadium. It was super interesting to hang out there since it really showed a different side of Venice (more the everyday life of normal people walking their dog or going out for a coffee) and we were there so often that the owner of a cafe over there started recognising us and he gave us free cookies on our last day and even offered us a job hahahaha! Sorry, I know this is long haha but I get so excited talking about what I learned. Just a fun fact to end it with, you showed a street sign ("Calle Longa S. Maria Formosa") and this is actually not Italian, it's Venetian! All the street signs in Venice are in Venetian (the local language) instead of in Italian, which I think is very telling of the fact the inhabitants really wanna hold tight to their own culture. :)
