Watch this before you buy the Fujifilm X100V. (2024) 

I bought the first X100 when first released. I heard about the camera from Zack Arias, a photographer I follow. Then updated to the X100S and that was it, I was constantly irritated by the super slow AF. Finally when the X100V arrived, I decided to try this one for the weather sealing and the new lens. To be honest the camera has been working pretty much ok with me. I’m not a compulsive shooter (been doing photography 17 years professionally), meaning battery life is not a problem for me. I use the back button to focus (to avoid the lag). I use hyper focal distances for most of my street photography. I use the film simulations in the same way as you, as a starting point to then post edit in Lightroom, mostly because I prefer a file with 14bit dynamic range than a jpg with 8bit dynamic range. I use the distance scale in the EVF, no problems so far. What really really annoys me is that the X100V needs all the time to keep f2 for the preview until you half press the shutter. It is not a fast camera, for sure, but it can be fast enough if used like an old rangefinder. My favorite feature for sure the leaf shutter that can sync to unbelievable shutter speeds, right there is the only Fuji X camera capable of that. It is a niche camera, I made it work for some on location photo shoots with nice results but definitely is not a camera for everyone. Great video.

Awesome video! You did a great job of explaining the pros and cons of the x100v camera. I like how you showed some sample photos and videos that demonstrate its capabilities and drawbacks. I think it’s a very cool camera that offers a unique shooting experience, but also that it’s not for everyone. I’m happy with my current Leica, but I’m tempted to try out the x100V successor someday.

This is why I use manual focus with back button focus, and prefocus using the zone scale (or just guess it). It removes autofocus shutter delay and still lets me focus without having to use the lens dial.

0:59 is a banger photo. As for the viewfinder its EVF only for me. And yeah the mode switch takes a lot of fiddling, not just you. Big agree on the full press delay as well. Having said all that, it's not a camera I'll be replacing anytime soon. It fits in my bag & goes everywhere.

I’ve been shooting for years using a Canon and started looking at the x-100v as an option to use something small and less conspicuous, plus I love the idea of using film simulations. If you have any suggestions that pertain to an alternative for this camera, I’m listening. I’ve heard the x-e4 is decent, but I haven’t researched it too deeply. Weather proofing is pretty important to me. Thank you.

I just sold mine after two-plus years. I don't miss it as much as I thought I would. It helped pay for my new Lumix S5II. I may get a Ricoh G3X to replace the need for a small street shooter.

Thank you for this video. I own my Fuji X100V that I bought in 2020 for the price you mentioned. And I love this little guy but I also see things that I don't like too. At the moment I wouldn't sell it even if someone paid me more than I first paid. BUT I can't believe that people pay more than 2000€ or more. But to be fair… most/many/all (?) camera prices raised incredible…

I agree, that 3 way switch is so hard to flick I have to hold the camera vertically with two hands to finesse it over. Optical viewfinder - it's romantic but I hardly use it. Only time I'll ever use it is for capturing panning slow shutter shots, it's fantastic for that but all other times the EVF is better. I recently bought the wide angle adapter and the OVF is unusable and the flash gets blocked lol. HOWEVER, I still love this camera, the quality and colours sooc are simply beautiful.

Great video Jay! Glad to see I made it to your “cameo” list of RU-vidrs who talked (maybe too much?) about this camera for years haha. I was a X100 series user since the OG one (that was called FinePix X100 back in 2011) and made some of my favorite images with these little rangefinder style cameras. But the reason wasn’t because it was pretty, hip or or because it had a OVF, it’s simply because it was with me at all time (my daily carry). For the first time since then, I don’t have one in my kit. Yup, I’ve sold my copy in favour of other options (like the X-E4). In the end, it’s easy to understand why there is a lot of hype around this camera, but I agree that you can get so much more for the same price tag. Cheers!

I agree with you that switching focus modes, especially switching to afc, is a pain in the ass. The dial is much too stiff. Second, I use back button focus with manual focus to get focus quickly, and then if necessary I can fine tune with the focus ring.

Does anyone know if any slight or unannounced upgrades are made to the recent manufactured x100v's compared to the ones that were made in 2020?

I’ve had this camera since launch, and I feel like anyone that had it before the hype, knows it isn’t worth the hype. Not that it’s a bad camera by any means. It’s a beautiful camera that inspires you to shoot, and I owe my love for photography to this camera. It’s my dad cam and I will not stop using it. But from day one, when I tried using it for street, the battery is brutal and the autofocus is slow, and it overheats like crazy. You mentioned the lack of good manual focus, I think that is why I don’t pick this up as much for my creative shooting. I love your really honest look at the X100V. You didn’t bash the camera, you just pointed out it’s flaws and if you have been using for an extended period of time, it’s things you can’t ignore. Well done

Nice video. I was a Fujifilm X100T shooter but found the manual focus controls (i.e. no lens barrel markings) very hard to use out on the street. I switched to the Fujilm X-Pro3 and use a Voigtlander 35mm lens (which crops to 50mm when adapted to X mount) and haven't looked back. Its so quick to snap photos on the street and quickly determine the hyperfocal distance at a glance. Will be interesting to see where the X100 and X-Pro lines will evolve to in the coming years. Keep up the great work on your videos!

Got mine way back at release as well on special for $1600, I had $1200 worth of Camera House vouchers at the time so it cost me $400...I love it and shoot it all the time along with my pro Nikon gear. 100% agree re the focus mode switch, it's a pig of a thing otherwise it's a perfect little grab and go camera.

I bought the X100V in December at the old price of $1400, but am still a bit disappointed for some of the same reasons you mention. I shot night portraits during a Fat Tuesday parade tried burst mode. Hardly any shots were in focus. When I tried single shots, the shutter was too slow. Another thing I found out in someone else's video is the NR, noise reduction. Even set at zero, I kept getting smoothed out images that I couldn't use. It is recommended to set it to -4. You can't turn it to off. When higher ISO's or any movement the NR kicks in. Years ago I had the X100 and had no problems. Since then I have been shooting Sony A7iii and A7Riii with no problems. As you said though the esthetics really get people's attention and I meet a lot of people that way.

The price is exactly where it will be when the next comes out. Everything is 35% more than 2021 and that’s just something we need to accept. Regarding this specific camera, it’s still cheaper than every other camera in this genre. Leica Q2 and Sony RX1R2 (the unsung GOAT).

As much as I like my X100V, it's definitely a camera for those who wants to get a Leica. I am happy I could have mine before all the hype. The price is ridiculous now. Good luck for those who try to have one.

11 months later I just realized you tagged me in this video! My X100V was gone just a couple months after my 1 year video because the EVF had issues and Fuji refused to fix it under warranty. The shutter delay was an issue for me even with manual focus at f8. At f2 (still manual focus) it was instant but it would always hesitate at smaller apertures. I shot in bursts to counteract it. I also got mine at just 1100 bucks and sold it for about 900 in 2021 beofre the insane hype kicked off!

I posted my X100V video and talked about what it did for me, how it changed me as a photographer, and heaped praise on why that was important. And then I sold it. I had gotten what I needed and for what people were willing to pay, it was an easy decision.

Idk man I use the ovf probably 90% of the time . I love taking the photo then see what I get when it has been taken . I agree its not the most advanced camera out there but it’s more enjoyable to use then my a7iv with my g master 35 1.4 . I also bought it at msrp $1399 new a couple of months ago and its the 3rd v I’ve bought since it was released .

The X100V is a really good camera. Hype or not. Everyone needs an X100V in their life. Don't listen to the RU-vidrs reviews that tell you not to buy it, it's going up in price because it's an incredible camera and it's out of stock worldwide! I've got one and I'm still in love with it. I won't be selling it. There is no such thing as a perfect camera! We want cool photos okay boys ?

Your autofocus issue will be solved if you switch to back button focus. Next, the focus mode selector is in a different place, but you can achieve satisfying results by using your finger nail to move it a click at a time or just have a quick look and adjust before taking the shot....not ideal but less time than you were taking in the video!! Also, it is little harsh to call this "ugly" I agree about the dual EVF/OVF. It is one thing I wish they would change. I, and a lot of people, use EVF 99% of the time. It would be a great way of keeping the price down too. The 100V is something I would never part with.....unless there is a 100Vi or 6....with maybe the new sensor and processor....and only the EVF!!!!

Switching between AF single and AF continuous shouldn’t be an issue… if you set it to AFC, then even without focus priority set, using back button focusing, you can use AFC by keeping the focusing button pressed, or single, just by selectively pressing and releasing the button… standard method for AFC-AF single use

As a long time X100 user, I tend to agree with most of your observations with one big exception. I honestly don’t think this camera is particularly discreet when shooting Street. To any casual observer you look like you’re using a camera, and just because it’s considered retro, it still looks like most other compact cameras, indeed also like quite few others as well! If someone really feels compelled to buy an X100V (if they can find one), I would suggest they might try and stretch to an X-Pro3. It’s only fractionally bigger with a 27mm lens, and the real advantage is the ability to gradually add more lenses, enabling you to own a really versatile kit.

I was trying to figure out what was bugging me about my V. That’s it! The focus ring. I think I can sell it for enough to buy an XT5 almost. Then get a real prime with mechanical focus.

I recently scored a brand new in box fresh produced X100V for the normal retail price of $1399 USD and as a long time Sony user, I love this camera. I knew what I was getting sort of because I also bought the Richo GR III Diary Edition. If people spend their money without thinking it all the way through I kinda have lil sympathy for them. Hype chasing is kinda a vanity play and that's never good.

What are the better alternatives?

I want my Leica MP film camera back, life was so easy then.

For me the main reason I use the X100 and Xpro line are the Optical viewfinder. If not for the optical finder id just rather use an XT line camera or the XE, why shell out extra money when not using the main feature of a camera.

There are a couple of reasons to choose the X100V over some of the options: it's weather sealed, and it has a leaf shutter, so it syncs with flash at all shutter speeds. I love my GX9 for its compact size and interchangeable lenses, but it's NOT weather sealed, and flash sync is limited to 1/200 or slower. At the current inflated prices, I PROBABLY won't add an X100V to my arsenal, but I might.

Agree with everything you say! I alternate the X100V and Sony cameras almost every day. The Images from my Sony cameras simply are way better, more depth and more clarity than the X100V. They just are. I still enjoy it though.

What camera are going for next?

Just got x100v at retail. It’s a nice camera for sure and can take nice pics but honestly the X-T5 blows it out of the water no question. If you want high end pictures you go X-T5. If you really want that character of an older camera you get the x100v

You mentioned at the end that there are better cameras for the same price, or even less money. In your opinion, which cameras are those? Specifically, cameras which bring a similar kind of creative inspiration, whether that’s from the form factor, built-in processing like the film simulations, or the like.

For me, having whatever kind of camera. The picture really depends on the photographer. The composition is the king. And the gold moment. For me. X100V is amazing. Easy to cary and badass look. Lols. I have to admit that the size and its look makes me fall in love again with photography

Yes, I think the current prices are incredibly inflated. I think I'll just slap a pancake lens on my XPro3 and wait for the next generation of the x100. It will be interesting to see the inflated price of the X100V vs. the next generation. Will the price be dramatically more for the next generation vs. the already inflated price of the X100V???

I had this camera, used, before it got hyped and I'm glad I sold it when I did, paid for quite a hefty new system haha. But honestly, this camera isn't worth it at $1400, in my opinion, closer to under $1000 new. Nuts it sold for $2k used. This was a good video that explained my reasoning as well for how I felt about it. Good to see an honest review

With anything that gets this overhyped, the backlash will come next... Why I hate the X100V, why I sold my X100V, 5 reasons not to buy the X100v. It's just a camera... and as you point out, way overpriced by scalpers. I have one and like it (paid below list price 2 years ago), and while I could sell it for a nice profit, I would miss it and regret it.

I have the almost same complaints about the xpro3 that I owned at launch. It's a very well made camera with a lot of cool technologies but it's not a true rangefinder. The Xt4 that I also own has the almost same guts but I'm a different and way better package. I like the xpro3 but it has too many design and tech flaws for a camera at this price. I'd never recommend it to anyone. The xt4 on the other hand when I got it was an instant "WOW! THIS IS WAY BETTER! THIS IS WHAT A BETTER THOUGHT XPRO3 IS!". Even with some ergonomics flaws it surpasses the xpro3. I usually use them at the same time (but with different lenses) and the xt4 wins everytime. The x100v is a very attractive camera but it's not worth more than half the price knowing the xe4 is more versatile at barely 1100 dollars with a lens.

Lemme guess, your future videos are gonna praise and name reasons why the Leica M is best.

First, that’s a very good camera. We can’t disagree on that, but second, that’s a really bad pricing for this camera! From day one, back in 2020, it costed about 1400€, more than its peers like XE or XT-x0 series, three times more than my old and trustee Sony a6000 (a better camera in general) and almost as much as a Sony a6500 (with IBIS, better AF and Video capabilities, plus the interchangeable lenses). Not to mention the excellent full frame mirrorless from Canon or Nikon (RP or Z5) for the same price. And for this money what you get? 1) a fixed lens with just OK performance and moderately fast aperture. 2) vintage aesthetics (subjective), 3) the Fujifilm simulations (for me aren’t that similar to real film and btw I don’t use JPEGs at all), 4) no IBIS, 5) no (real) manual focus! Here I insist. You can’t pretend to be a vintage “experience” camera without actual MF. I mean mechanical, tactile, focus ring not a stepping motor. For all the above I would never gonna pay more than 800€ tops. But thanks to RU-vid “photographers” cameras like this sells for double their actual price…

Look - those sample pictures are not a good argument against the camera

The OVF part is just dishonest, it never looks like that unless you are doing 5cm macro shots, and at that point its absolutely pointless to use an offset viewfinder, normally the OVF is big and easy to look trough as every other video about x100v shows

You're one of the few on YT that point out the issues with x100v. Sadly its focus by wire nor does it have a manual focus clutch. Sounds like you need a big boy rangefinder...lol$$$

6:43 that lack of real MF features is the thing making me want to trade my X100T for an X-Pro 2. AND I could use my amazing old Olympus Zuiko lenses on it, with their focus scale and all. Also big bummer that older models never got updated with newer film simulations. Their excuse is the older models computing power is too low and jpeg treatment would take too long (especially with the Clarity settings IIRC). Well I'm fine with it, just state it in the firmware update and let people choose if they're OK with shooting slower or not.

If price is on level 1000-1200 USD is OK. But everything above not make a sense. For 2000 USD easly You can find better solution than X100V or VI soon. I’m sure. Too much marketing is here…this is good photocamera but if price is on normal level. This is my opinion.

It's a good camera, but it doesn't make your photos better. That's what a lot of people are saying and expecting out of this camera on Tik Tok at least.

Be warned! My Fuji X100V Leaf Shutter has just crunched!! Bought it new just over two years ago... Not worth getting repaired. I now plan to buy Leica, like I should have done the first time.

I'm not surprised to hear such a well-considered take from someone who shoots Velvia. I swear all the hype is from the Recipe bros, who shoot Classic Chrome cooked Warm and Green with a Pro Mist like they're shooting through a dirty car windscreen and calling it the film look - as if they've never even Googled film before. 😂 The dumb thing is that all the price inflation for this trendy style can be entirely avoided, because you can do this look with literally any camera in-camera. Turn down the saturation, White Balance shift to Amber and Green. All the muddy green "film look" you could ever wish for.

Oh…and the low light ability is just god awful.

let's talk about the bad: film simulations...it's like saying let's talk about the bad in digital, it's the digital...let's talk about the oxygen...it's invisible...this is confusing...you say it's bad everything that is perfect and well thought, and aligns with the design history of former fujifilm cameras...this camera is designed to slow down, not to shoot and spray....everything in demand on spot....what if babies would come out in 2 days???? you don't pay the price always for what it can do , but for the feeling...ask a Leica owner ;)
