Thank you Madame President, you always brighten our day. 🤗 i finally gave in to my broody bantam, she is sitting on 8 little bantam eggs in a pop up brooder in the garage. She is so happy after being broody every month for the past 3 months to finally have some eggs to sit on, she is making such sweet contented chucks. If all goes well, we may have spring chicks to add to the Banty flock! 🐣 Lord knows we don’t need another roo, King the bantam chases me all over the yard, bless his heart. By the way, he did learn to do the rooster dance! Have a wonderful week! 💕 Lee

It was many years ago at the beginning..well a few years in my life with chickens. And I bought them at Tractor Supply in my town. I no longer buy chickens that way unless I order special. I mostly hatch my own now or buy from a specific hatchery that I love.

Thank you, great timing on this topic. My baby white silky chicks (ordered from a Silky breeder) are starting to hatch. She sent me a video of the adorable chicks. I currently have 10 adult silky's, 7 roosters and 3 hens. The roosters have worked it out and get along fine. I live in the Sonoran Desert in Tucson, Arizona and the silky's do really well in the hotter months. In a separate living space I have 3 barred rock and 4 road island red hens. They are all given ample shade and access to wading pools when it's really hot here. Thanks for all the information you bring us.🐣🐤🐥🐔

From all the info, 7 roosters will run your 3 little hens to death. Are you planning to rehome 6 or get more ladies? I got 7 chicks, 2 are roosters and there is competition between them, so my bad mannered roo runs down the hens, (no dance), then the other follows behind with another unfortunate assault. The rude guy tends to do this to 1 particular hen and chases her away from food and treats. He and she are a pair of Buff Orpingtons. He's gotta go. Your silkies must be so fun to watch though❣🐣🐓

Have a plan for what to do when all the ladies you bought...aren't. People order/buy pullets and end up with a cockerel or two STILL all the time (assuming you're not buy sex-linked chicks). I have already made my written list of the few breeds I'm allowed to purchase if I run across them (so my spouse won't worry I will go overboard AND he can't give me grief if I bring a few home, they're ON THE LIST lol). I am thinking there will be more abandoned roosters than ever this year, with such a huge interest in backyard chickens due to egg prices. I have room for another oo (2 diff coops) so I will take one it comes up. Which it may, as I live in a rural area.

You can get bantams or standards as vent-sexed day-old chicks from Meyer Hatchery. This is what I did for my 2nd batch because my first batch of 6 which were straight run turned out to be 4 roosters that had to be rehomed after 4-5 months of raising them. Yes, I paid extra for the vent sexed chicks, but it was only about $7-$9 each. That's way less costly than raising them just to rehome them. I only have bantams. Also, pay the extra to get them vaccinated against Marek's Disease.

I live where it gets well below zero Fahrenheit in the winter and around 100 in the summer. It's a very difficult balance, but the cold of winter is longer here than the heat of summer, so I go for the cold tolerant birds and work hard to keep the girls cooler in the summer.

We were so lucky. Five chicks - all five were pullets! We lost one hen last week to a javelina. We are still heartbroken 💔. We want to add Orpingtons this spring. There are some official and unofficial chicken breeds here in Greece. One of those that are recognised, is the one we have, called "karaguniki". We have one rooster and 10 hens and they are enough to cover our family needs. They are also dual purpose, quite big birds. We absolutely love them. Some people have asked me the reason why I picked this breed and the answer is so simple. It's an indigenous, local breed. That means that the breed has existed in this area of the world for who knows how long and they are totally adjusted to the climate and the way the seasons appear. I don't know a lot of chicken owners but in all seriousness, shouldn't the adaptability of the animal be one of the top concerns before you get your first flock? Another question I have and I honestly don't understand is why people mix the breeds. What is the gain of doing that? We got our chickens for about a year and yes, I have a lot of questions!

Question. When has it been 120° in Elfrida AZ? The internet says June is the hottest month for Elfrida with an average high temperature of 95.3°, which ranks it as cooler than most places in Arizona. Now Phoenix gets HOT! When I think of hot Arizona I don't think of Elfrida. We have property near there, in Willcox, and I think we had 1 day where it got to 101°. We used to live in Menifee California and temps there would hit 113° for weeks 😬 Like I said, I don't know if it gets that hot in Elfrida, correct me if I'm wrong...
