I Trellised Butternut Squash this past spring and ended up with 8 edible squashes. The blossoms mostly rotted and I later found the roots were infested with RKNs. I have that bed loaded with crab meal and marigolds now

Those darn things are inevitable in Florida gardening. Make sure to use crop rotation as well, that can help too.

Loved this video , thanks a ton ! I am a new gardener , and I tried growing zucchini in spring and it was a failure. this time around I am using a cover and hand pollinating. Don’t know how successful I will be with going against and trying to beat the nature lol Looking forward to growing all the greens I bought from your website , fingers crossed !

Thanx for clarifying the pollination process for sqaush (and i assume also cukes). I thought the plants were charging up with pollen through the male flowers before producing female flowers. Now I've learned that the plant is conditioning pollinators to visit it so as to spread the pollen around to the female flowers when they bloom -- brilliant.

I stay in North Carolina ten miles from the border with South Carolina i planted two types of water melon seedless and seed. My seedless did decent but the seed didn't have time for the fruit to mature also some kind of huge plant grew that turned out to be squash apparently but it never fruited at all. Either the seeds were mixed in with the watermelon or a bird brought them in and as i weeded my plants every morning i must have thought the squash was a melon so i let it grow but anyway i was later tolled that squash cant grow along with water melon. Basically the squash plant got huge and what i thought was going to be fruit just turned out to be some strange large growth full of what looked like seeds. This was my first attempt over the next few years ive stuck with just the seedless and have had plenty of healthy fruits. I still have problems being able to tell when my fruits are ripe. I believe my melons are called sugar babies they are dark green almost blueish solid colors and have a large yellow spot on the bottom when ripe but so far half have been ripe and half needed more time but looked felt and had the dead little stem so im glad its just a hobby. I get better each year and try to save the fruit from the best plants to grow each year

I recently found your channel, and have already started binge watching your videos. Lots of great info! Question: I have the same little green caterpillars that you showed on your squash plant. I've been trying to identify exactly what kind it is with no luck. Do you know? The closest I can get are armyworms or cabbage worms, but those don't seem quite right. I also noticed a lot of bright orange eggs on the leaves and in the chewed up blossoms. Someone thought it was the poop from the caterpillar, but I'm doubting that. Thanks!
@TheUrbanHarvest
@TheUrbanHarvest 3 года назад
Glad the videos have been helpful! Bright orange eggs could be leaf footed bugs but hard to say without seeing. They could also be aphids which are sometimes confused with eggs. The difference between the army worms and cabbage worms are slight, the stripes and the way they crawl. But really treatment would be the same regardless of the species.

I give up on squash EXCEPT Seminoles. They are the only ones here in 9B the produce and have no issues. Got 40 pumpkins this year from 2 plants and NO fertilizing, watering (except early plant) or pest.

It really tastes just like any other summer squash when picked young. I pretty much just harvest them young so I get more production but they are sweet like a butternut when more mature.

@TheUrbanHarvest
@TheUrbanHarvest 3 года назад
@@kimberlyd317 I was referring to tatume, sorry. Chayote is bit different, kind of slight cucumber but mostly bland which will pick up any seasoning you cook it with. The seminole pumpkin taste's just like any other sweet winter squash (acorn, butternut, etc.)

I started Seminole pumpkin seeds in 3 large 10 gallon pots, in July. They are vining out beautifully but only 1 pumpkin so far and it’s almost the end of August. No flowers, what should I be feeding to get them to flower, thanks. I’m in Western NC and we’ve had hot humid weather all summer...

I tried to grow this Zucchini that’s labeled as a container variety but I grew it in my raised bed and it never produced. Same story with some cucumbers I was growing, tons of flowers and now the vine is dying back.
@TheUrbanHarvest
@TheUrbanHarvest 3 года назад
You may have ended up with squash vine borers if the plant was doing great then all the sudden the whole plant died. There's no signs of fungal issues right? That would be my other thought.

My understanding is that Seminole pumpkins are not native to Florida. Which if they came with the Seminole tribe, then that would be in the 1800s... thanks for sharing!
@TheUrbanHarvest
@TheUrbanHarvest 3 года назад
Its an interesting concept to discuss, especially with food crops. What qualifies a plant that has been cultivated successfully in an area to be considered a native or heirloom for that area? Technically all seed has traveled from one area to the next by one means or another. Taking a Darwinian perspective, how did the Galapagos get its plants? We label many of them as native or endemic but those islands were rocks under the sea in the not so distant past.

Do you only recommend growing bigger squashe? I'm trying to grow black beauty on my screened in porch, but pollinators won't get to them until I move them outside.
@TheUrbanHarvest
@TheUrbanHarvest 2 года назад
Hand pollinating squash is super easy. You just peel of the petals of a male flower and dust the pollen into the female bloom. That way no chance of pests when you move it outside.

I live in Okeechobee, I've planted Summer squash once and crooked neck next. Both times my plant are healthy, and no bugs, but their leaves get no bigger than your hand. And it's like the plant just stops growing when it's gets to the 12 to 14 inch height. I get lot of male blooms, but nothing more. Any suggestions ?
@TheUrbanHarvest
@TheUrbanHarvest 2 года назад
could be nutrient deficiency. that being said male blooms always come first though followed by females several weeks later depending on the variety. and the one in this video is seminole pumpkin which will get considerably bigger leaves than a bush type squash like your trying to grow.

I'm having issues with ants coming and closing the blossomed flowers they seem to crimp the flower closed. Then nothing can get to the pollen to pollinate. The ants come from neighbor yards. I dont want to use insecticide. Any tips on how to stop ants traveling into my beds?
@TheUrbanHarvest
@TheUrbanHarvest 3 года назад
They are part of our environment and aren't likely causing the blooms to close. Squash blossoms are only open for a day, really only in the morning. Try noting the time of day and see if you can find them open in the morning.
