In this video I explain how I put seafoam in my Gold Wing and what I learned from doing it. YOU MUST CHANGE YOUR OIL AFTER DOING IT. If I never looked at my oil I would still be riding it with that oil in it. and that stuff was gritty feeling between my fingers. Music: BigCarTheft

I fought the dreaded hesitation for 2 years on my 2008 Gl1800. I tried several bottles of seafoam, it seemed to help but did not cure it. I ran across an obscure post on a forum about the hesitation, he claimed to fix it. There was no other discussion about the fix he had explained. It was time for an air filter so while I had the shelter off I did what he recommended, it cured it. If you look closely down the bore of your throttle body where the butterfly plate seats on the sides of the bore at idle, you will see a faint dirty mark from the throttle plate. Take a toothbrush soaked with seafoam and lightly scrub that mark off the bore and the plate clean. It fixed it completely. I've got about 8K on it since then and still running perfect. Mine was so bad it was difficult to do any slow speed maneuvers in a stone parking lot without slipping the clutch drastically. Next time you do an air filter, check it out. You must look closely to see it, at first I didn't, then I got a light and I could see a dirt mark.

That just seems almost unbelievable does it not? I'm not doubting you, I just find it hard to believe that simply cleaning a tiny bit of a deposit on the throttle body bore would remedy a low speed stumble. That's wild.

I appreciate what you told us about the sea foam. I just bought a 1998 1500 with 18,000 and right away I changed the oil. I then noticed I had a hesitation and knew it was from sitting so long. Also, I owned three 1800's and they all had that pan under the motor and its to keep rocks from ponding the lower part of the motor.

Conventional oil disapates heat better while synthetic superior slickness reduces friction. I use Honda synthetic blend. My engine runs cool and oil change intervals once every season is clean. The pan protects the motor from road debris definitely leave it on. Yes many bikes don't have that protection. Great video seafoam is a great product and can be added to oil right before oil change. Good call on dumping the oil right after treatment.

In to addition road debris protection some of the Wings have fore and aft ridges under there that can act as wings in a severe crosswind, leading to bad handling. The belly pan blocks those cross winds. Or so I read before I got mine! 1995 GL1500, Mobile1, once a season ( even for 10-12,000 miles. But it is almost all high miles, and very little in town. )

I just did a seafoam in both the gas and the engine oil. Drove it about 180 miles and changed the oil this weekend. I have yet to see what driving is like as I took off my wheels to get new tires put on and now have to replace the brake pads. The oil was only because I don't know exactly what the previous owner did. I know he was a sheriff and evidently did a lot of off duty work so maybe a lot of slow maneuvering, so I just wanted to make sure the clutch plates were clean. The oil was pretty dang dirty.

Ditto. Shell Rotella for my 38-year-old pristine ‘84 GL1200. But only the T6 FULL SYNTHETIC. Synthetic only in all my vehicles. Syn is much superior to organic in every way. Longer lasting with superior lube qualities. Where organic oil will scald at high temps and lose its viscosity, synthetic has a MUCH higher scald temp retaining its viscosity much longer than organics can. It’s nearly burn proof!

I’m only asking because maybe I’m not getting what you’re saying, but adding anything into your fuel tank should not result in that getting into your engine oil, if it did then surely your fuel would always leak into your oil?? And if so then surely your oil could leak into your combustion chamber and you’d be burning smoke the whole time your engine is running ?? Maybe I’m 100% wring but that would be my understanding ?

My 1500 had been sitting a couple of years before I got it and stumbled at low throttle plus the gas was nasty. Tossed the old gas and filled it with 93 and a whole bottle of Seafoam. By half a tank, no more stumble. Oil was who knows how old so fresh oil and filter along with 4 oz. of Seafoam. After 300 miles it was filthy so it got changed with Mobile 1 again. About 500 miles now and it's getting dark again. Seafoam loosens the crud and a good oil flushes it out of passages and crevices. It ain't cheap but oil is cheaper than steel.

The dealer told me if you’re going from the regular mineral oil that is started out with an all gold wings, OEM oil and you go to synthetic you are likely to develop oil leaks because of the molecular size of the mineral oil is larger than the synthetic oil and therefore it will penetrate those all the gaskets and stuff and eventually cause oil leaks. So I stayed with the OEM Honda oil. Have you on the bike since it was new and used synthetic always? I just bought this 2005 and it only had 27,000 miles and it is always been serviced by the dealer so it always had that OEM oil.

@mosmotorcyclejourney9067
@mosmotorcyclejourney9067 2 года назад
Depends on what's causing it. Could be a air issue with gas cap, could be a vac line, or could be you just need to clean the throttle body with some carb cleaner. That's under the air filter. When it closes to an idle it could have some carbon deposits built up around it causing the unsteady idle.

I needed a deeper clean due to the hesitation and from what the oil looked like being as dirty as it was after a thousand miles it worked. And of course the performance was much better with no hesitation. My neighbor did the same thing with his gold wing 1500 and he ran it till the gas light was on and he dumped a whole bottle in the tank. It smoked like hell for about 15 min then he filled the tank with gas when the gas light came back on. His has never ran better. That was 30thousand miles ago. So just depends on what you need it for and what could be wrong. Thanks for the comment and watching.

Good point. But I would so absolutely not. 50000 miles and never had seafoam through it. Ran so much better after I did it. And put 2500 miles on it since. Still runs like it did after the seafoam treatment. If it created excessive where it wouldn't be black oil. It would be oil with metal shavings in it. @@mosmotorcyclejourney9067 I'm gonna have to disagree, metal chips are a sing of catastrophic failure and not excessive wear. Black could be carbon but the only way to know is with analysis, when many metal types rub together with a lubricant it creates a black film. @@adamt581 well then we agree that we disagree. And I will leave you with this. My father has a 1990 GL1500 he bought brand new. He runs seafoam every year through his gas like I did too mine one time. He now has 193000 miles on it and it runs perfect. so if you think it creates wear I would say you are sadly mistaken. It's a 31 year old bike. And had a compression test done in 2019 and passed. But this is all personal preference. Do it or don't, your choice.

Wait, you just added the SeaFoam to your gasoline and got it that black? Wow!! And you didn't add Seafoam to your crankcase oil 100 miles before the oil change like SeaFoam suggests to clean the inside of the engine. I've used SeaFoam in the gas tank to clean the fuel system and injectors.
@mosmotorcyclejourney9067
@mosmotorcyclejourney9067 2 года назад
Well I have no idea why the oil was that dirty. It had just been changed before I added the seafoam and I checked it myself and it was clean. But not after the treatment in the gas. I would think that was carbon deposits in the combustion chamber and the oil collected it. Only explanation I can find.

You are holding the oil bottle upside down. Look at the image on the bottle. The spout should be held at the top to minimize spilling
@mosmotorcyclejourney9067
@mosmotorcyclejourney9067 Год назад
Yep you are correct. But when you have no funnel you do what works. And holding the bottle the other way poured oil all on my motor because of the angle of where you pour it in. Thanks for watching and the comment.

I put it straight in a 1500 gas tank with very little gas. Never had no problems with a gl1500. A gl1800 I did one treatment and called it good. Half a can to a full tank of gas. Not putting it in no oil. Don't think that would be good for it. But I'm not a mechanic.

Mine sat for 5 years before I picked it up so I have no idea if it was empty of fuel old gas or anything, it doesn’t seem like a big deal to remove and clean the carbs and sync them just time consuming. I’m retired so I have the time .

I dont believe seafoam would have anything to do with dirty oil, gas burns in the combustion chamber above the oil, they dont really mix together unless you have very worn rings.. Most oil will be black after 1000 miles anyway.
@larrychambers4407
@larrychambers4407 Год назад
Pay Attention People. DO NOT PUT SYNTHETIC OIL IN A WING !!! Here's why,. The transmission and engine share oil. The slicker synthetic oil is BAD for the friction surfaces on the clutch discs. The discs will slip as they mate or come together under load. This causes more wear and heat than necessary. Thus shorter life for your clutch. Don't take my word for it. READ your manual. See what HONDA RECOMMENDS.

From a 2001-2005 Service Manual Recommended Engine Oil Pro Honda GN4 or HP4 (without molybdenum additives) 4-stroke oil or equivalent motor oil API service classification: SG or higher JASO T 903 standard: MA Viscosity: SAE 10W-40 The clutch slippage could be caused by mistakenly using oil with molybdenum additives. I haven't been using Honda synthetic blend oil for the last 80k miles. Have used some other full synthetic brands without issue but I've stayed with the full synthetic Mobile1 Racing 4T as shifting was smoother.
@bernhards.8529
@bernhards.8529 Год назад
Your summary says it all: "See what HONDA RECOMMENDS." Look for the viscosity, look for the JASO standard, look for the API class. If these fit the oil is fine regardless whether mineral based, semi synthetic or full synthetic. As the Goldwing revs low there is no need for the high performance full synthetic oils, but from a performance point of view they outperform the mineral based oils, but the Goldwing will not get to that limit. Changing the oil regularly is much more important than the type of oil.

That oil is tar, The sea foams will clean everything but it sure causes the oil to get hot to turn so thick, I run B 12 in my GW and my oil stays new, The slides get sticky and not let them move as smooth till I put in B 12, about a glass full per tank should do the trick. Would double cheek with Honda on New bikes before you use it in Your tank and how munch
