Not so good for the fish, but perfectly fine for the bird. It's only one fish. I have seen a cormorant gobbled down 3 or 4 fish of that size or larger.
Dat's why certain venomous reptiles(in particular anacondas, boa constrictors & pythons) swallow whole pigs, goats, sheep, goats, even young bulls, etc...& then go 2 sleep right there until some inquisitive farmers, herders or hunterd come up & cut off their heads.
I see Cormorants here on Biscayne Bay in Coconut Grove from my apartment, but I’ve never witnessed this activity before - that’s one very hungry Cormorant!😀😂🤣
Exactly! I’ve always heard that when food is very scarce, they will resort to the “spiny-scaled” fish that they know will always be abundant in freshwater lakes, nationwide. This includes fish like bluegill (sunnies) and bass species, even tho the cormorants would obv. prefer the less spiny/ bony alternatives like the trout they depleat from the hatchery-stock programs.
But the fish of this size can wriggle, shake and kick so hard and violently, that it's possible that the tummy of the bird may get ripped apart! But apparently, it doesn't....and that's how it works in this beautiful nature😊
Hi Mark, In Launceston, Tasmania we saw a cormorant, who, like your subject, was eager to catch a large morsel. He had forgotten to take his Bill to Vent length into consideration and had the Eel well into the stomach and still about 3 inches of fish yet to enter his bill. He looked very uncomfortable or it may have been pure shame!😁
Even some "humans" hv been known to die 4rm "choking caused by overeating". Once they sat down squarely at THEIR PERSONAL FOOD-TABLE with all dat spread (good & bad), they kept @ it until they started coughing, sneezing, hyper-ventilating & then choking 2 death. Did u ever hear anyone say dat "too much of anything is bad 4 u"!?
To catch such a prize, then not able to eat it? I was right there with Mark. No way!!! And then, voila!!! Just goes to prove, where there's a will, there's a way. And that bird had determination!
Like reptiles, their skin has amazing elasticity. I once had a boa constrictor that got to be quite the big boy. I’d defrost jumbo rats ( I never fed live), and wonder how in the world he was going to get that down. He never disappointed! The cormorants sunning and drying on the broken pier pilings was quite the sight.
sir Mark you should have shown fully the entire video---the cormorant totally swallowing the fish... why cut???filming the most exciting interesting part the action/reaction of the bird...
I saw one of those come out of my lake in Fl. It was carrying a fish so big it looked like a bird with a fish head. Took me a moment to realize what it was
