You're a great teacher! I've heard it be said that it's difficult for people to accept changes when their dignity is being attacked, and you managed to be specific, critical, and persistent while being encouraging, clear, and not patronizing. Nice work dude

The ~90% internalisation is pretty much how I teach mathematics to kids (although 100% is more appropriate and achievable in basic maths of course). There's been a long debate about memorising times tables and whether or not it's worth it, but the instant recall of a fact uses a lot less cognitive load than a calculation (I think of cognitive load as analogous to RAM) so when it comes to finding factors of numbers, the ability to instantly recall that say 6x5=30 (in your words, you have the fact internalised) will make the problem of finding the factors of the number 30, not only easier, but you will learn more from the act of finding the factors, because your brain has more spare load that can be used for learning rather than calculating (called the germain load). [side note: I should say it's debated whether times tables should be learned explicitly with focused memorisation practice or just implicitly from solving problems involving the times tables calculations - personally I think both have their time and place, but the engagement and opportunity for multiple representations of the tables means the latter can lead to more of a relational understanding (ie where knowing times tables fits into the grander scheme of mathematics) than an instrumental understanding (ie you are trying to learn by memorising things in a list, with no meaning connecting the objects]. The interesting find in recent years is that it appears this spare cognitive capacity known as the germain load is likely the necessary component of learning, and I really liked this video and explanation because you seem to have grasped a lot of this intuitively and applied it to melee in a beautiful way. I'm sure there's no one accusing you of being a bad teacher, but if you ever needed some ammo in an argument then you can say that your techniques are backed by the latest in education research! (which then you can debate the validity of...)

I am just starting to get an appreciation and grasp the beauty of math as an adult. My interest in the subject was destroyed at a young age by things like memorizing times tables.

I've watched this whole episode at least 30 times, and I only just realized that this video only has 6k views. What a fucking shame. Every player worse than top 10 on their regional PR should be studying this thoroughly.

This is done so well it’s making me wonder why I think I’d rather do coaching instead of competitive play… I think it’s important for people who love this game to see others helping spread that love and I know I had such a hard time conceptualizing melee before I learned to literally “actively see what is in front of you” through practice and mentality and i love the idea of helping others reach that point too

Unless I’m asked to decide tho I don’t think there’s any reason not to compete, play casually and teach as much as I’m able- still grinding my skills, won’t ever stop learning the game

Awesome video, thank you for sharing this. I'm going to try and ask myself the same kinds of questions about my own gameplay.

i have a really hard time getting real meaty combos on samus ever to be honest. I think that's her greatest strength. She just Nairs out of any combos I try unless I'm playing gannon and out range her dumb ass.
