hello~✸
I've come to terms with the fact that I have been feeling art blocked for a long time now, and each time I feel like it's gone, it comes back again. I knew it was a deeper problem than just feeling creatively burnt out, so I decided to start "The Artist's Way" by Julia Cameron. The book is a 12-week journey to unblock yourself creatively with morning pages, artist dates, and activities to see what you actually enjoy doing. This is a peek into my first and second weeks of starting!

I used to draw nonstop but after my depression got worse, I found myself unable to draw for 2 years. I procrastinated every kind of self care. I'll try journaling and taking walks. Thanks for the inspiration, loved the video style

Try adult coloring books, it lets you color without the big step of creating something to color first

@@AmbiCahira There are also coloring books that let you trace the line work as well as color. It makes me feel more creative because I can control line weights and make it a little more in my style. It has definitely helps me be less paralyzed from creating.

I did Morning Pages over 20 years ago. I remember it being a great exercise. I'm glad you are finding value in it too, Tiffany. Being creative, whether for a living or a hobby, is a little bit like being an athlete. There is at the start what people call "talent," and that can kickstart the desire to do art, be an artist, etc. But after a while, talent isn't enough. We must train to get better and that is not always fun and inspiring (because there's always the question, "Better than what?") Still, the discipline of artmaking does have its rewards which makes it worthwhile. After a while, we get to the place where training doesn't work either. All artists must learn how to nourish our explorations with the same wide-eyed curiosity as if seeing things for the first time, an attitude similar to what the Buddhists call "beginner's mind." I think this is what Morning Pages cultivate, because once we can unwind the clutch of the worn out tapes that repeat in our heads (which is usually the trap of believing we could live forever on our talent immortal, and somewhere knew inside, it ain't so), then we can return more easily to "beginner's mind," which I experience as a blank page, or a cleared-away desktop, the opening of a window. This point of view provides the space for something new to happen, for me to see with new eyes what has always been in with me. It's more of a homecoming than a quest to a mountaintop. This is why artmaking is a spiritual endeavor and in the end, I have discovered, it's not pursued for the applause from making something that propels me to create, but for that inner conversation to rediscover what makes me whole, what brings me home.

i bought this book two weeks ago and it's honestly already so mind altering and makes you realize the little things. And realizing that you don't have to make such huge, crazy steps in your life to feel accomplished. The little things really matter. I also definitely cried at the start of this for Week One and two. it's so great seeing other artists doing this and sharing their journey.

thank you. I sat down with my sketch book today and scrolled Pinterest to find something to draw, something that would put me back in the amazingness of art. after an hour of doing nothing I stumbled upon your video. listening to your voice did something magical. I made art that im happy with for the first time in a while. I am going to try to use a little of the given advice. I hope you know how you've helped me today:)

I've been on a burnout phase for two years, last year I took a long break and your right taking a break wasn't enough. I was so glad I stumbled to the podcast Magical Overthinkers on their episode on burnout and it helped me so much break free from the rut and fix the root problems of my work process. I like how it's evidence based explanations and solution and it helped me understand how to approach this. I'll also check out the artist way from your suggestions!

I've been art-blocked for the last 2 years, my avoidance really took over especially with the things I loved. I'm only just in the last couple months making my way back to creating & it feels so good, it really reminds me of how I've really been coasting through life on autopilot but now I feel so much more like myself now that I'm drawing most days, just in pencil with no expectations & no intent to post what I make. I still have this weird fear of fully giving myself back to it & into the whole Instagram community because as much as I loved posting it became extremely overwhelming. It felt like a pressurised thing of having to post or you'd be drowned by the algorithm, so I felt like I had to post, not because I wanted to & it took the joy out of it, but I feel like a lot of other people have experienced the same thing since the pandemic & also disappeared from socials

oh my god, you have no idea how much i needed this video. For the last 6 months I have been in a crazy artblock. My studio is a complete disaster and everything I create when I have the energy to do so has been riddled with constant negative thoughts. I have never had an artblock/burnout like this ever and honestly I thought I was immune turns out I am not. I have been doing other things I went crazy buying plants to brighten up my home and then I decided to sell second hand clothing. I cried, iam gonna go get the audible. Iam desperate to to be creative without all negative aspects..

I really enjoy seeing how other people go through this book. Makes me want to bust it out again it's been a couple years. One thing I found was it can be quite dogmatic which put me off at first but after reading what some others had to say I was able to take a more "take what works and leave what doesn't" approach and it went way more smoothly for me. A big example I seen a lot of people express was just not being able to do the morning pages first thing in the morning for various very legit reasons so instead they did them after they got there kids off to school or even in the evening if mornings were just not an option. It just made me realize it's better to do it in a way that you can actually sustain in your own life than feel you "failed" or "there's no point" if you are unable to do it in exactly the way Julia lays it out. We all have different lives with different obstacles so don't let anyone tell you "there are no excuses not to do it in exactly this way" modifying things so they work for you rather than getting frustrated and giving up altogether is a very important life skill that I'm really trying to work on. I just wanted to share that in case anyone else gets to caught up in the books dogmatic approach because I do feel there is a lot to be taken from this book and it would be a shame to miss out because you feel you can't to do it "right". I know I miss out on a lot in life because I'm waiting for the "right" or "perfect" time that will never exist rather than just meeting myself where I'm at and just going for it. I'm really working on trying to get out of my own way in this regard because I'm tired of missing out and stunting my own development.

I fully agree with you, I've found it actually easier to start my day and wake up a little more with coffee or brushing my teeth before getting to the pages. I think however you want to approach it, is however it should be done! :)

Mine is so bad I havent been able to create anything for a while. I used to do a lot of creative things now I just play animal crossing, read fantasy, go for walks in the park, drink some coffee. I did deside to study Communication so I hopefully eill be doing that for work after finishing my degree. Its hard to have been so creative and now just not. I am enjoying exploring interests and relaxing/recovering from busy exams and assignments. I have a vew weeks of vacation now.

"Running away from what I really want to do bt filling my time and space with other things" --- I have recently had to confront this in myself, so it was nice to hear someone else coming to this realization and knowing that it's something others go through and that, that also means that others must have come out the other side of it! A book I am reading, Solo: How to Work Alone (and Not Lose Your Mind) by Rebecca Seal has been helping me find balance in life, trying to be productive, not letting others down (whether real or imagined), making money, and enjoying life and trying new things. Life, it's a lot and I get that time scarcity mindset and trying to notice and move away from it. I'm happy to see your journey and love that you shared with us. :)

There's a lot of vlog type videos where artists go and do art within the community and I just love those types of videos, so I would love for you to continue that. I think for those of us who work at home, it's hard to remind ourselves to get out and away from the house. And I just love the idea of doing art in public places, even if I don't get the opportunity to do that much. I look forward to seeing what you put out next. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for making this and being so open and honest, I really appreciate it. I'm going through a super tough time right now, I have the book but life has just been like a scary film since I got it and the pressure of making art and reading has been something I've been pounding onto myself so it's made it harder! Today I started the day with water, food and 'positive art media' which is just videos of and by artists for me. I appreciated this video I'm actually going to read the book today, for some reason this has made it less scary and reminded me to (to paraphrase Anne Lamott) turn down K Fuck Radio (that's what she calls the negative self talk haha). Your orchids looked beautiful

Wow this opened my mind a lot. I’ve been really struggling with art because since almost the start of 2023 until the begging of June I spent almost 8 hours a day studying, and felt a lot of stress and pressure over my shoulders. Now that exams are over (everything went well btw!!) I have the time to draw and I have sooooo many ideas, but I’m so scared to take the first step because when I did I didn’t like how the piece turned out. I might look into the book that you showed, it seemed very interesting! I’m also thinking of doing anatomy studies and flower studies for fun! Your orchid drawings really inspired me and reminded me that I’ve been meaning to pick up a plant book from the library too! So thank you for sharing your journey!! Yeah I think I needed to see this video today. Been stuck for months (years, lets be honest) creatively and for a while I've heard, like how you mentioned, that loud voice in my head that says "what's the point?" or "who am I even doing this for?" I like that the methods from this book are more than just excercises in art fundamentals like how a lot of generic "How To Beat Art Block" guides are, but instead a journey where you identify what's halting you creatively and what you can do to re-route your lifestyle choices to be more focused on your needs and your happiness. I've never added a book to my wishlist faster lol I wish you the absolute best on your creative journey, and I think I might pick this book up and try it out for myself!

I like that about the book as well! Honestly I went into it thinking it would be giving me prompts to make different types of works or something, but I like how it's more heavily touching on experiences and how it shapes our work!

Yeah I think breaks are just procrastination on the problem which is mental. A break doesn't solve the perspective shift or mindset shift that needs to be done to continue being creative with a sense of relief. Took me a while to figure it out too :)

The best advice on how to deal with artist's block, is to just do it. Just make the art.

This was really interesting! I listened to "The Artist's Way" on audio, and I was intrigued by it, but I never actually did any of the exercises! It was cool to see you trying the activities and reflecting on them.

this makes me want to start journaling and walking places by myself :) I totally empathize with what you're saying in the video. I'm in college right now for graphic design, but it's summer and I find it so much harder to be creative in the summer when it's not for homework. But I started painting while watching your vlog and I already feel so much better. I love your videos! 🧡

I absolutely loved this! You got me inspired again to work on my art block instead of postponing it and then going back to that ‘old system’. That really hit home hahah I’m really curious of the other weeks!
