An explorer at heart, Adriana speaks to the adventurer in all of us. Her studies in quantum biology and passion for space have lead her being selected as one of the final candidates to set up a colony on Mars. Adriana shares her reasoning for her jumping at the opportunity for a one-way ticket to Mars and invites us all to explore our boundaries just a little more.
Adriana Marais studied theoretical physics and philosophy at the University of Cape Town. She completed her MSc summa cum laude in quantum cryptography at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), and was awarded her PhD in quantum biology at the same institute earlier this year. She is a member of the Quantum Research Group established by Prof. Francesco Petruccione at UKZN, and plans to continue doing research in quantum biology, specifically studying quantum effects in photosynthesis as well as the origins of prebiotic molecules and life itself. Adriana has published a number of scientific and media articles on her research. Most recently, she and her team published an article “A quantum protective mechanism in photosynthesis” in the Nature journal Scientific Reports. In 2014 she was one of 200 Young South African achievers recognised by the Mail and Guardian. In 2015 she was one of 15 recipients worldwide of a L’Oreal‐UNESCO International Rising Talent Grant for Women in Science.

Sorry to break it to you, lady, but you ain't going nowhere off this planet. Nothing or nobody has ever been higher up than 150 000 feet in the air. And no such thing as "other planets" to go and land on. Discover it the hard way.

+gsacni The X15 reached an altitude of 356 000 feet for a couple of minutes in 1963. This is the highest man has ever been. I cannot believe she thinks she is going to Mars. No person has ever been to space.

It is precisely this limited way of thinking and aspiring that will keep man where he is. Think of all the advances we as humans have made in the last 100 years (or as little as the last 50 years)…now tell me that we are not able to leave earth within the next 100 years. You need to familiarise yourself with what people are doing these days, and then let your mind go…

Morne van Rensburg This is not limited way of thinking. You just believe everything you are told without question. "Nothing has or ever will penetrate the glass dome" -Dr.John Mack, Dept.of Defense. "Scientists have discovered something truly remarkable above the earth's atmosphere - an invisible shield located approx. 7200 miles above the earth that scientists are likening to Force fields on Star Trek. Now that scientists know the invisible shield exists they are trying to determine how it was formed and exactly how it works. "Its almost like these electrons are running into a glass wall in space" Nasa admits they cannot get past the 'Van Allen Belt' - this is the same thing! You have a lot to learn Morne. Show me one photograph of one planet? There isn't one - they are all made up CGI!
