Was in San Diego yesterday and got the alert to get away from the water because of one to three foot waves in the San Diego area. There was absolutely nothing to worry about there but seeing this type of devastation is scary.

It depends on the power of the event that causes the tsunami and the amount of water displaced. For instance, there was an event in Alaska back in the 1800s I believe (might be the 1900s) where a huge part of a mountain or glacier slammed into a bay and there was a tsunami that reached like 700ft at shore. Totally wiped out the town there. If a huge asteroid the size of the one that killed the dinosaurs slammed into the Atlantic or Pacific oceans. At that velocity, there could be waves 1000s of feet high..

True story. In 2004 a tsunami hit a Pacific island and the so-called primitive people in loin cloths using bows and arrows got the message from the spirit (God) and fled for high ground. The civilized people had no such warning and didn't fare so well. Many perished. The human race has basically lost the connection with the creator.

The after eruption photo is after the first smaller eruption earlier in the week. You can't get a clear shot like that right now.

The image of the island at 1:07 is false. That image came about from an eruption on January 14th. We do not have any images of the current island look due to all the dust in the air.

What terrifying about Tsunamis aren't the waves but the pull of water back to the ocean. A few feet can make a car be moved. A human being is powerless unless they hold onto a secured structure.

The difference is that the eruption caused the upper water tsunami and starting point was in one point. The earthquake is raising the water from the very bottom and also the starting point is wider

The before / after pictures, if I recall correctly, were from a smaller eruption before the _'omg, look, from space'_ one. I think island pictures are still pending from the tsunami-maker. _[edit: They added a correction in the video's description]_

First, I do hope that everyone who is going through this survives and are ok. This does seem less severe than the Indonesia Tsunami or even the Japan Tsunami. On another note/question, Do we know if this type of seismic event is capable of changing our weather systems? I know that having smoke and ash in the air is bad but it also helps to block the sun's rays.

Depends on size. For something of this size, it'll probably change local weather systems for a few days or weeks. I don't think it'll have much of an impact on the US or Europe

Just a small example of the fact that the Earth is doing whater it is going to do. 10,000 years ago there was a similar "climate change" to what people are blabbering about now. Ice caps melted, sea levels went up, crazy weather, etc. Humans had nothing to do with it then, just like now. Nature is going to happen no matter what. And what industrialized humans have done in just the last 150 years is only a tiny blip on the radar of history. We're just a speck in time.

That's why we need to put on our thinking caps and stay away from the seashore habitat that are not our home but are home to many sea shore animals. We're not thinking. Degrees money and such don't pay for Devastation to are seashores. There's only the aftermath of I hope and I wish we didn't destroy. If you really care about those negatively affected by this then I would recommend a small donation to any number of charities currently on the way there to help. I have looked it up and Red Cross is one such group that you can donate to.

Current estimates are placing the energy output of the explosion to around the same as the Tsar Bomba. So, that's probably not true.

This was a three foot tsunami, and when you compare it to a regular thirty foot wave hitting the beach, you can see the difference between the two. Tsunamis aren’t just big waves hitting the beach, it’s the encroachment of the sea onto land. Edit: At incredible speeds!!

This reminds me of the eruption of stories of Thera (spl?) in the Mediterranean Sea. Just like this volcano it blew itself up and left the island it was a part of in pieces. It's wild to think about the amount of power volcanoes release when they erupt.

Undersea is actually worse, as depending on the type of vent exposed, you can have millions of gallons of water being instantly converted to steam which intensifies the eruptive power.

@@sarge6870 I know. I didn't explain myself well. I'm in the beach area of Baja California, Mexico and every time something like an earthquake or other natural disaster happens in Japan- we feel the effects of it over here.

The "tsunami" that hit Santa Cruz was measured at 8 inches. Santa Cruz citizens swear it was at least 8 FEET.

This video reminds me of the 2004 Sumatran Tsunami, and the 2011 Tohoku Tsunami. Although obviously more severe, regardless, its a reminder that life is precious.

The picture of the island showing the center of the island blown out is not what it looked like after the eruption. It is what it looked like just prior to the large eruption. The center of the volcano was blown out in earlier precursor explosions.

🤔 Satellites ARE all around the earth...here in Florida we see NASA launching all the time & the stated missions are "satellite placement"....evidently they are letting Mr. Musk do the space exploration these days 🥰
