I'm not a huge fan of rolex probably because of your same reasons, but the explorer is absolutely one the most beautiful watch in their catalogue and I'd love to own one, for that first reason I wouldn't sell it even more if it has a connection to a family member and memories in general associated to it, that's a keeper

IMHO, one of your best videos ever. I can hardly stop laughing. - "After watching the video three times, I was none the wiser" - "I'm pretty sure I turned to alcohol after that" Such great one-liner comebacks!!! Pure genius. Thank you for all the creativity you put into your craft. Please know that it is not in vain. We love it, and keep coming back for more!!

I sold my Casio DW660 which I bought in 1995 on joining the RAF. Had it as a daily-wear for 10 years and eventually sold it for pennies because it needed a new strap. I wasn't really 'into' watches back then, and didn't realise I could replace the strap, cover, etc... I wish I could have that watch back...

If you don’t like it, keep it in its box with all the papers and everything you have that came with it and store it away. Give it to your kid to either enjoy or sell 40 years from now when it’s a rare antique. They can bring it on antiques roadshow and it’ll make for a great episode.

I actually feel some regret about getting this far into this hobby. I used to be content with just two watches: a Seiko solar chronograph that I wore to anything indoors and a Casio Pro Trek that I wore outdoors. The Seiko broke one day and over the last 5 years, I discovered automatics, Swiss watches, GMTs and somehow found justification to spend thousands on watches that are less accurate than a $10 Casio from Walmart. I sold the Pro Trek more than 3 years ago and just bought another one back, but this one has Multi-Band 6. I think it's time to get back to basics and reclaim some sanity with this hobby.

My biggest regret was not getting into quartz (digital) watches sooner! I'd started with old manual wind / automatics, progressed to new ones, but still shunned quartz watches, especially digital ones. Now, the bulk of my collection are quartz watches and my daily wear is a G shock. I now appreciate more the tech behind how quartz watches work, and how they brought wristwatches to the masses.

”Brought wristwatches to the masses”? Not really 😅 Everyone had a watch on their wrists before quartz era. There was no other alternative in those days.
@plektosgaming
@plektosgaming 2 месяца назад
@@janelavie4115 The issue was that we were suffering with basically tiny cheap wind up alarm clocks on our wrists. Wind and set it daily. Usually some cheap Timex or similar that wasn't water resistant (not really) and didn't like being banged around very much. But we did know the time. Quartz, beat it up and forget about winding it - it was the reason we all bought one. Set the time once a week and on look - it's got some waterproofness so the rain doesn't ruin it. :) What quartz brought was reliability and survivability without the cost of a "real" watch.

A top video Russel. The only watches that I re bought that I can remember are the F-91W (I misplaced it, got another one then found on the same day it but I will still keep its sibling). I already had the the G-Shock 5610 non 'U' version with the EL back light that had been with my through various hospital procedures and surgeries over the years but still decided to get the 'U' LED backlight version with arguably improved functional updates. I'm keeping them both one for sentimental reasons and the new one for a brilliant tool watch G-Shock wear. Maybe I should take that offer of therapy up. Thanks for sharing.

I’ve got an Explorer I and adore it. It’s my daily watch and I’ve got a gray sailcloth strap, gray/black NATO strap, and black croc strap that look great with it. Great, versatile watch, and if I were to go down to one watch, that would be it. But if you don’t see yourself wearing it regularly, sell it. They’ve been around for 70+ years - you can find another if you change your mind.

Great topic and very well presented MWC. I would probably normally suggest selling the Explorer given you are not wearing it, but prices are not as strong as they were say two years ago, so a more prudent position might be to hold onto it and sell at the top of the next 'crazy time'. This also gives you the time to do some serious thinking on what you would get in its place.

Definitely keep the Explorer, Russell. With the intrinsic connection to the original model through your Grandad being a special one, you have the right idea already IMO. Unless your kids were also close with your Grandad as well and would like his vintage watch more than a late model Explorer, I’d say create some memories with your own watch for them to remember you by and keep the tradition alive mate! Great video btw!
@michaelhorn8962

As long as you're undecided about the Explorer, just hold onto it. No need to be hasty. It's practically money in the bank. God forbid the day comes you might NEED to sell it, but if you're not totally in love with it, might come in handy. If you firmly decide to keep it, once the little MWC is old enough to notice, you should wear it all the time so that he identifies it with you, and when you hand it down it will really feel like "Dad's watch."

Regarding the Explorer I think you answered your own question in the way you reference it. The fact it is a Rolex is incidental, if your Grandfather had an omega you would have got one of them. Its not a “flex” as the youth would say, it’s a memorial/tribute. Definitely a keeper 🥺

Hiya Russ! First time commentor - I found your channel via JOMW and the review of the Origin. Your videos are fun, I enjoy them! My regrets have stemmed from buying disconinued Seikos. Buying a used SKX can be a minefield, and a couple of times what looked like a very well presented watch turned out to be a poorly reassembled non original watch out of the Philippines. I've then associated the bad taste of paying too much for a watch not worth the asking price with the watch itself, meaning I don't wear it, and it sits in the box reminding me of it. A hard lesson, but a valuable one.

I got the call and purchased an Explorer 124270. It looked perfect online and perfect at the AD. It is historic and pure class. After 7 months of ownership I sold it. I really wanted to love my Explorer, but it felt so small and dainty, I hated the 14mm bracelet but hoped I’d get used to it…never happened so I sold it.
@liquid_metal
@liquid_metal 14 дней назад
Felt the same way, which is why I got the 40mm instead. Have a 6.5" flat wrist and it fits perfectly. As for the "historic" 36mm, it's a misconception. The Explorer 1 is inspired from the Edmund Hilary Smith De Lux watch he wore when conquering Everest. That watch was 33mm with an 18mm lug width. It also had a leather strap and a "12" numeral. Neither the 36mm (which is really 35.5mm) nor the 40mm (which is really 38-39mm) are accurate reproductions, not least with a steel bracelet. For that reason, the sizing should be based on what works on your wrist and what you like, not slavishly choosing this watch based on a made-up story from Rolex's marketing department. Plus a load of complete nonsense on Rolex forums waxing lyrical about the 36mm where, with almost cultish fervor, it's made out the EX1 40mm is the biggest watch man has ever seen! It's all quite pathetic and childish. Rolex released the 40mm because the 36mm wasn't selling. In my opinion, the positioning of the EX1 is the 36mm and 40mm are 'his n hers'. The smaller, more dainty Explorer 1 for the wife; the larger, more masculine one for him.

Suggest that you retain Retain all those watches which have a History / Sentiments attached to them & replace all the other watches with New (& Better) watches Ciao & TC P.S. : One should always listen to his wife because if & when anything goes wrong you can always put the blame on her 🤣

I must admit I have brought a couple of watches based on your recommendations , both g shock squares , the GBD-200 and the GW-M5610u and am pleased to say I’m very happy with both . Plus I’ve just ordered a Heron marinor that I first saw on your show too. Keep up the great work and DON’T SELL THE ROLEX !!!

Over my 5 years of being a watch nut, I've learned not to have regrets.... I've sold every watch I've had, apart from my 5600 G shock (Omega Aqua Terra, Speedy, Bond 2541 Seamaster, IWC mark 16, seiko Turtle, seiko Skyliner , Hamilton pilot pioneer, CWC G10 and others), but it's just been great journey... I'm down to just the G shock, but looking forward to what's next... the more i discover, the more i learn. No regrets P.s. have to own up... bought and sold the Speedy 3 times, aqua terra twice and iwc twice.... yes.. weirdo here..... i did regret selling them but now have realised that if i sell a watch, it normally means it wasn't right in the first place... not every time, but most of the time

You're definitely "guilty" of making me purchase a watch. Turned out it is one of my watches that qualifies easily in the "only one I need" category. Good for you. Keep up the good work, mate. Long time follower, but commenting for the first time ever.

Hey Russ great video. Full disclosure I’m not a big fan of what Rolex represents and how they do business these days either. That being said I respect the history and that watch should be worn if you are going to keep it. I would sell it. Take the proceeds and carefully choose something more in line with your sensibilities, and somewhat iconic from a brand with history- worthy of being passed down. You can still look at the new watch and trace its lineage directly to your grandfather, remembering him and how much he inspired you.

I miss my aqua terra, my seamaster 300 and my nomos neomatik... Especially bums me because I got them at prices that now seem like any collectors wet dream. But the piece I suprisingly miss a lot is the Atelier Wen Hao. This gorgeous enamel dial, the beautiful salmon leather strap, and that price!!! ..... If I could turn back time🤔🧐

Great advice on the Grand Seiko. I absolutely love the idea of one but also worry it’s too blingy. Maybe the Spring Drive GMT though… Also, don’t sell the Rolex. It’s a beauty and you’ll probably enjoy it more and more. Memories and sentimental connections are half the charm of watches so lean into it.

Great video! Keep the Rolex. If it reminds your of grandpa...... priceless ❤ I have a GS I don't wear. Been thinking about selling it. Also a SLA 039. That one is tougher. Actually wear that one to work.. Think my biggest problem is having too many watches, can't decide what to wear. Kind of funny is that my less expensive Seiko divers hold my heart the most!

Russell, I couldn't read all the comments but the predominance said keep the Explorer. I agree. Watches don't go bad. The dilemma, however, is having enough time on wrist. (And time replacing batteries!) Regrets: Brilliant topic for the video!

Hello, dont do anything to fast. Change the staps, I do that all the time. Use a very tooly strap on the Explorer like a Cordura with a nice buckle. Try some leather on the Grand Seiko, nothing shiny. but the Sinn can go. (I like Sinn but the Doxa is here now)

The only watch I have that I never get sick of is my SKX007. I liked my king turtle but never LOVED it - Sold. I liked my solar tuna but never LOVED it - Sold. I hardly wear my Casioak anymore - Can't sell it because it was a gift. I am considering a step up in value for my next watch with various options (Doxa Sub 200t, Longines Zulu, Rado Captain Cook even up to a Sinn U50). I will sit on it and see if I fall out of love with any.

I have exactly the same watch (Explorer 1, 39mm) and used to love it a lot more, I want to shrink it down about 2mm and have a more rounded bezel. I would love to compare it to the 36mm version and also the 36mm OP, to see if I’m missing something? 😁👍🏼

Keep that Explorer, Russ. It's more than just a watch for you, regardless of how much wrist time it currently gets. Thanks for making such great content!

Why??? People like 'em because of the brand. Purely the brand. It's a boring as heck old man's watch.

I've kicked around the idea of selling everything and just being having a "One Watch Collection" (yeah I know crazy right?) but if I did I would sell everything off except my Seamaster! My dad has a Seamaster so I'd like to keep that tradition going in the future. So with that being said, KEEP THE EXPLORER!

For me, a GS is a GS when it has a Hi-Beat. I'm not selling my car to have one but some day it'll be in my collection. I've got a Presage Cocktail Time that I absolutely adore but hardly wear. It's sitting there in my watch box looking absolutely beautiful but it's not more than a once a year wear. I still adore it but am conflicted.

KEEP the Explorer! Even if you don't wear it much... it has real value to pass along to your kids. Plus the wife wants you to keep it... so keep it. ;)

I researched the Baltic Aquaschape GMT after seeing them talk about Baltic on About Effing Time. I bought the blue/ green bezel with the needs of rice bracelet. Love the watch and it kept me from killing my fund to purchase the watch I really want. An Oysterquartz Day-Date in yellow gold. It’s an uncommon watch with a history that’s quite interesting. To me the PRX looks more like an Oysterquartz Copy than a Gerald Genta “inspired” watch.

I have the 214270 mk2 for 6 years now, since then i bought few other watches like omega, grand seiko and Tudor, I don’t wear my Explorer that much now, however every time i put it on I know it’s my exit watch. I always think watches with sentimental value deserve a place in a collection, your wife is wise, listen to her 👍🏻
