Nice, simple video... I recently purchased a Seiko SNE049 and really enjoy the watch. I have always had $20 Casio watches before. The Seiko was very inexpensive and the materials of the watch are to the point. What I mean by that is you can tell it's just stainless steel, hardlex face with a leather strap. I can't stand "fake bling" (if you will) when it comes to watches. I did not know what a mechanical watch was until a few minutes ago and I must say, they are really fascinating pieces of equipment. Since the purchase of the Seiko, I have been bitten by the timepiece bug and really wanting another watch. I'm just fascinated by the precise technology in such a small item. Thanks for the video

thank you very much for uploading this video sir. i've been wondering for years about the differences of automatic and self winding watch.
@Synthspike
@Synthspike 12 лет назад
@madman44c. Usually "winding" is what I call hand wind. That is, that you have to wind up the watch manually. An automatic is self winding. Quartz watches don't have a spring that needs to be wound, they run off a battery.
@Synthspike
@Synthspike 11 лет назад
A smooth sweep (most often with a second hand that ticks 5-8 times per second) is almost always associated with mechanical watches. Almost all quartz watches have a second hand that ticks once per second. But that is "almost". You don't have to search too far to find some exceptions.

It's okay, I forgive you. I'm glad now you understand the difference between mechanical movements, quartz movement and fully electronic watches (most accurate). I personally have a Rolex oyster perpetual that loses a couple minutes every year. That is acceptable. But I also have a digital electronic watch, if I want extra accuracy.

We are talking in general here because there are always a few exceptions to the rules. The vast majority of watches tick. The second hand on most quartz watches ticks once per second. The second hand on most mechanical watches (automatic or hand wind) ticks 5, 6, 7, or 8 times per second. Seiko Spring Drive watches are the rare watches that have a second hand that glides smoothly without ticks.
@Synthspike
@Synthspike 12 лет назад
There is no best - only personal preference. Watch enthusiasts generally prefer automatic. I like all 3 types but am particularly attracted to hand wind. Most people like quartz because it is the most accurate, practical, and affordable.

Quartz watches bother me because, as it ticks, the second hand seldom lines up with the markers. Even on expensive models. I think if you are going to pay a lot of money, it should at least have the precision of a perfectly aligned second hand.

Yes, the 8735 was discontinued about 2 years ago. They have similar models, but I think all are generally all automatic, not hand wind. I think the only hand wind model left is the 8786, a skeleton version of the 8735 and it costs a lot more. These are in the Classima Executive series.
@LeathermanFan2

Don't forget solar quartz, kinetic quartz, and dynabeat watches too. Casio G-Shocks and Eco-Drives are solar quartz, and Seiko Kinetic watches have a rotatory that powers a electric generator. And Timex came out with a watch with a battery with a mechanical movement called a Dynabeat.
@Synthspike
@Synthspike 12 лет назад
@shaokem It helps an automatic watch to reach full wind if you also manually wind it. But some automatic movements are certainly efficient enough to reach full wind all on their own just using the auto wind. Many do not even have a manual wind feature.

On a normal automatic movement, if you wear it all day it should be fully charged when you take it off at night. It should still be running when you put it on the following morning. Typically you could expect an automatic watch to run for 36-40 hours after taking it off. From your description it seems you have either a cheap movement or a good movement that needs servicing. Most manufacturers recommend that you get automatic or hand wind watches serviced with new lubrication once every 5 years.

You still have to wind a automatic watch. Many people believe you never have to wind them. You may not have to wind as often as a purely mechanical watch, but you still have to wind up the main spring.

@2fast4uspartan There are watches that are sometimes referred to as atomic. They remain highly accurate by receiving a radio signal to synchronize their time to an atomic clock. In North America most of these types of watches can receive a signal of the US Government atomic clock in Colorado. Casio Waveceptor series is one such clock.

@RebelKnightCSA
@RebelKnightCSA 12 лет назад
@shaokem This is only true if you have stored the watch for so long, the watch has completely run down. Then you need to manually wind. But if you wear the watch every day or keep it on a winder, then there is no need to manually wind.

Most hand wind watches have a power reserve of 40 hours. So basically you need to wind the watch every day and a half, but most people end up winding once a day. But there are far more automatic watches. If you wear an automatic watch every day, it should just keep running. Under $1000 new my choices would be Tissot or Hamilton.

im sorry i still dont get it.. please correct me if im wrong: we have either a quartz or mechanical watch, quartz is a battery-powered watch in which you dont have to wind it and whose second hand is ticking, mechanical can be either self winding (an automatic watch whose second hand is moving constantly instead of ticking) or manually winding, just like your baume & mercier watch... BUT how is the hand movement of a manually winding watch? is it ticking or moving constantly? thanks!!

So if the second hand sweeps smoothly it means it's a mechanical watch? If it does it in steps it's a quartz (battery)?

@mikekent7724
@mikekent7724 3 года назад
If you are looking for accuracy of time, quartz is the best choice. In general, a $200 quartz watch will easily outperform a $2000 mechanical watch in terms of accuracy. You could find exceptions if you look hard enough: a very good mechanical movement (Rolex, Omega, etc.) might beat a really poor quality quartz movement. A good mechanical watch might be accurate to a couple of seconds a day but a high end quartz watch can be accurate to a couple of seconds a month or even a couple of seconds per year.

How long last working an automatic watch if you keep it in a drawer, 1 week?
@Synthspike
@Synthspike 10 лет назад
Most automatic watches have a power reserve of about 40 hours. If you wear it for a day, it should be fully wound. Then when you take it off, it will run for about 40 more hours before it stops.

@IhateYoutube
@IhateYoutube 10 лет назад
panchoskywalker It's not so bad when you own one Automatic and you wear it daily. But what usually happens is that you become a watch collector because it's fun! And then you wind up with all these watches that need, well, "wound up"! :) They make powered watch winders for Automatic Mechanical watches where you fasten the watch to a pad inside the case and it gently spins the watch in both directions to keep it wound for you. They make these with multiple pods so if you have multiple auto's you can keep them all ready to go. If you go with a straight mechanical (hand wind) then you will have to keep it hand wound.

I have this old automatic thats probably over forty years old, I took it out of the drawer, gave it a few shakes and now its working, but the problem is that it loses a little over one minute every day, is this normal or is it because it's old and needs some sort of repair?
@Synthspike
@Synthspike 10 лет назад
Your watch probably needs an overhaul. At least it could be calibrated for accuracy. Mechanical watches need to be serviced and oiled like a car's engine. Most manufacturers recommend an overhaul once every 5 years but I usually stretch that to 7 or 8. Then the repairer should do a calibration on it to make it more accurate. You can expect a good automatic to be accurate within 10 seconds a day. Some don't match that accuracy but most can be within 30 seconds a day.
@Kostas1601
@Kostas1601 10 лет назад
Synthspike Thanks for the reply man, and how much would an overhaul like that approximately cost on a Seiko 5 for instance (my watch)?
@IhateYoutube
@IhateYoutube 10 лет назад
Kostas1601 Servicing an Automatic Mechanical or straight Mechanical, prices will vary from the low side of say 50 dollars to the high side of $200. I wouldn't go cheap and I wouldn't go expensive (unless it was a high end watch). I own numerous Seiko 5's and I don't think I would spend too awful much for a service (that's why I am learning to service my own). I don't think I paid more than $80.00 each for my Seiko 5's straight out of Japan.

@mikekent7724
@mikekent7724 10 лет назад
All quartz watches use some kind of battery. Most have a battery that needs to be replaced every few years. You can get long life batteries that last about 10 years. Then there are quartz watches with rechargeable battery. Some use solar power to keep a charge: Citizen Ecodrive is a common series. Some use motion to charge he battery: Seiko Kinetic is a common series. But I don't know of a quartz that is also an automatic mechanical. If I needed a military watch I would choose a Casio Protrek with Solar Power and Atomic Time keeping or a G-Shock with those features.
@philipcooper8297
@philipcooper8297 10 лет назад
Solar powered quartz movement. In theory, if you give it 8 minutes of day light a day, it'll last 30-50 years before you have to change the battery in it. If not in use - not charged, the battery life time is dramatically reduced, just like when you let your car battery go flat.

Alright so someone explain something to me. For one I am new to the watch world and I only own two as of right now. From what I've been reader, it seems obvious to go with quartz movement, it's cheaper and works better so why the hell would you choose an auto or mechanical over this? I mean I like the nice smooth movement of the second hand but it's not really a selling point. So why do all these watch experts bash quartz and worship the other two styles?
@Synthspike
@Synthspike 9 лет назад
I own many of all types of watches, as you can see in my videos including the one above. Quartz certainly makes most sense for most people. If you want the least expensive to maintain (a battery every few years) then quartz is most worry free. If you want something that looks good, the movement inside is basically hidden anyway. Quartz is great, I'm wearing a quartz watch as I type this. But I still admire old style mechanical watches. I can't fully explain the attraction of mechanical movements for everyone but to me there is something admirable about a tiny machine made of springs, sprockets, gears, and levers, balanced on pin point ends of tiny jewels. It's all moving parts, no electronics, no battery, , all technology from the days before electricity and electronics. Modern engineering makes mechanical movements better than they used to be but the essence is a tiny machine that has evolved on ideas and discoveries over centuries.
