Airplane engineer here: the wing box is the safest place in the plane if anything were to happen. Sit there if you wanna survive a crash or escape quickly.

I realize that I am watching this, like 4 years after you posted, but maybe nobody commented that when people like sitting near the wings, it’s because that is the most stable, least turbulent part of the aircraft to fly. Especially on smaller aircraft where if you’re sitting near the tail you can feel a lot of swaying side to side.

So to answer your concerns about the "where do you like to sit on a flight" question, this took place in a time where smoking on airplanes was still legal, but being phased out (it wasn't illegal for all airlines until 1990). Therefore, many airlines reserved smoking for the tail section. I would imagine this is why three of the wives answered with the tail.

They liked sitting in the rear because they could smoke. I had a horrible flu as a kid and had to sit in the smoking rear of the plane. The worst flight I'm my life. That was around '85/'86.

My Uncle Ed didn’t get married until he was 53. When he met Anne her identical twin daughters were teenagers. They’re still married and retired to Maine where it snows very hard but the fishing and lobster is good.

Yeah, Butthead not Beavis The where do you sit on a plane question was common then but in regards to safety. Surprised that wasn't how the question was worded by the show. Wing just means middle. Or "over wing". I was young then but there were bigger plane crashes like every month back in the day.

In a plane you either want the wings or the tail. Wing seats have the emergency exits right next to them so in a ditching the wings will be some of the first seats to get off, reference the miracle on the Hudson. In a full on crash, the rear third has the highest survival rate so that's always a good pick too. I believe there's one specific seat in a certain plane that on multiple occasions has had the lone survivor of a fatal crash and it was toward the rear.

Stewart seats usually have survivors for some reason. Some chick in europe I believe was in the steward seat and the plane broke up mid air at whatever 30k feet and somehow she didn't die from the fall. It messed her up real bad but she lived and was the only person to live. I can't remember if she had horrible survivors guilt or she went back to work and was in another plane crash. I drink a lot so some things are a little fuzzy when I'm borderline blacked out watching random stuff on youtube

y'all must not have trouble flying: near the wings is the way to minimize motion sickness during takeoff and landing. It's physics. No idea why anyone wants to sit near the tail.

Tail is the best place to be if there's a plane crash. Your survival odds are something like 60% at the tail, 30% at the front

I prefer the middle seats of a plane. You get the best window scenery and it doesn't take too long to disembark. Only downside (other than not being first class) is you're a little bit away from the restrooms but oh well

In the 80s smoking was allowed in the back of the aircraft. Sitting over the wing likely means in the exit row which would have more legroom than anywhere else in coach.
