Watching A Christmas Story (1983) FOR THE FIRST TIME!! || Movie Reaction!! 

Hey everyone!! Sorry had to reupload this because the previous version got blocked! Hope this version can stay up and see you this week for some more surprise movies!!

This movie is so significant and relatable to me. On the negative side of things, I got my mouth washed out with soap on many occasions for swearing and back-talking my parents. On the positive side, I so badly wanted an electric guitar that I did the type of "hinting" that Ralphie did to plant the idea of that gift in my parents' subconscious. It worked. In 1982, when I was 16 years old, I got my first electric guitar for Christmas. My parents hid the present just like Ralphie's father did. After all the other presents were opened, thinking that I wouldn't get my wish that year, my parents revealed that there was one more gift hidden away in my sisters' bedroom. My "Red Rider BB Gun" took the form of a Peavey T-30 electric guitar. I've been a musician ever since.

The narration in this movie is what held this movie together. And fun fact, it's the voice of the author of the book. It works because only he could have interpreted the narration the way it was intended. The tone, the inflections, even the delivery of the funniest lines.

The dream spots in this are hilarious. "Randy lay there like a slug. It was his only defence." XD!!!! Randy flat on the ground with that narration makes me laugh every time. "Ohhhhhh fffffffffuddddgggeeee......" "Only I didn't say fudge." XD! The physical acting when Ralphie's mom and Ralphie's dad discuss his fight is amazing. It's clear from the dads face that he's asking "Do I need to get involved?"but the mom changes the subject and lets him know "No, I handled it." The guy who says "The line ends here, it begins there!"is the narrator. Lmao, Ralphies face after Santa says "You'll shoot your eye out kid!"and the slow moving of the boot into his POV("HOOOOOO HOOOOOO...Ho." and Ralphies anguished "NOOO!"as he's booted down the slide is one of my favourite scenes of all time! Ralphies dad was the only person who he didn't ask for the BB gun and he was the one who got it for him. Such a sweet moment.

This is timeless. It will always be charming, funny, warm and relatable for audiences. The narration, the daydream fantasies, the Dad's cussing ... just great. Generations have fallen under its winning spell, and that'll keep happening over time. I love that the American humorist Jean Shepherd based this film on his own semiautobiographical stories-- and that he co-wrote it and narrated it. His books of story collections are worth seeking out.

Every Christmas there is a channel that plays this for 24 hrs and my mom being the crazy but lovely person she is, plays it for those 24 hrs. No one can change it and it's been that way for as long as I remember. I was born in 02 so my childhood wasnt exactly like Ralphie's but it brings up so many memories, it's my favorite Christmas movie.

The Wizard of Oz helps place the time of the movie. The Wizard of Oz premiered in 1939. Ralphie said they had the same stuff last year, so that makes the year 1940. While the war was already going in Europe, America didn't enter the War until 1941. That makes it pre-war.

I love how this movie really show what it's like to be a kid at Christmas through the narration and what it's like for the parents with their reactions. Times change but kids at Christmas are the same.

11:16 "What are we gonna do?!" "I don't know! The bell rang!" As a substitute teacher, I can confirm this is actually a fairly accurate display of kid logic. In that kids don't always make the most logical decisions. 😆

It just means that mom is so busy hopping up and down serving her family that by the time she eats, her food isn't hot.

No such thing as laughing too much at this movie....it's still funny 40 years later. The scene where Ralphie's mom gets Randy to eat his dinner floors me every time, especially when thr camera cuts to his dad and he makes such a face🤣🤣🤣

Aaahhhh one of my all-time favorite Christmas movies! I love it dearly. I think I love it because A Christmas Story is just a simple retelling of one family's December set in the 40's/50's. The stakes are just "the little boy won't get the gift he wants", and he's so motivated to reach his goal (obtaining the gift he wants). It doesn't hurt that there are so many fantastic performances and hilarious lines throughout it all.

Yes, the "air rifle" that Ralphie wants is a spring-action BB gun. I had the same model when I was about 12 years old. It was not uncommon, however, for youngsters to hunt with a real "fire-arm" at a fairly young age. My first hunting experience was when I was about 9 years old. I had taken a "hunter's safety" course in 4th grade, and earned a certificate and an NRA patch. To celebrate, my father took me out squirrel hunting, (we always ate what we shot), and I used Dad's 22 caliber pump-action rifle. I was a terrible shot, but responsible none-the-less. Also, at about the same age, I got my first try with a pump-action 12 gauge shotgun. That outing was just target practice rather than true hunting. Again, I was accompanied by my father.

The Old Man is often so overlooked and underrated, like the joy on his face when he gave Ralphie the BB gun and trying to suppress a smile after Ralphie says the f word. Darrin McGavin gave such a great performance.

Soap in the mouth was most definitely a real punishment, one I received a few times when I was a kid. Probably isn’t that common anymore (hopefully it’s not)

I think soap in the mouth was a more common parenting technique for punishment back in day. My mom has said her brother (my uncle) had soap in his mouth quite often when they were kids because he was always getting in trouble for bad words haha

I thought your laughter was totally appropriate. I was a teen when this movie came out. My mom would have been close to the kids' ages in the time period, the 1940s. The first time we watched it with my grandparents, they could hardly breathe from laughing, because every scene and detail in it mirrored their own experience as a family back then. Especially the scenes with the Mom getting Randy into his snowsuit and the "Mommy's little piggy" scene, because it was a long-running family joke that one of my great-aunts treated her boys that way - overdressing them against the cold to the point they were always damp with sweat, and doting and spoiling them over food. When the grandfolks saw it in the movie, they almost fell off their chairs laughing. My mom also had harsh memories of those old-fashioned snowsuits, which were wool stuff with cotton, which got soaking wet in the snow, were heavy and not at all warm. We love this movie at our house.

Another great Christmas film is "It's a Wonderful Life" (1946). It was originally shot on black & white film, but was colorized for the first time in 1986 and re-colorized a few times since. I've seen both. The original is great if you want to enjoy the film as theatrical audiences and 40 years worth of television audiences enjoyed it. The colorized version is well done too. The colors are subtle and don't look "artificial" or out of place in any way. Audiences who lack interest in black & white films might find the colorized version preferable. Either way, the narrative is outstanding and James Stewart's iconic role as George Bailey is timeless.

As an adult, one of my favourite things about this movie is how the family doesn't feel like actors playing a family, it feels like you're just observing a real family. I don't know how they did it, but it's so magical.

Hard to believe that you've never seen this movie before. TBS has been annually airing 24-hour marathons of this movie ever since I was a kid.

"Is the major prize going to be awful?" Depends on who you ask lol

I think we like and revere this movie so much because its just a really well done slice of life story about what its like to be a kid during Christmas. Few other Christmas movies take that route, as most of them are centered on older characters or the morals surrounding the Christmas season. For instance, most of them talk about the "true meaning of Christmas", but how many of us actually experience or think about the true meaning of Christmas in our lifetimes? On the contrary, ALL of us have been kids and know the feeling of wondering if you're going to get your most wanted Christmas gift. There's just so much more in this movie that's relatable when compared to most other Christmas movies which are either fantastic in their themes and settings or a bit too "produced" with them.

You seriously need to watch It’s a Wonderful Life next. It’s right up your alley.

I had a very similar imagination at that age. This movie nails it. Everything is life changing drama at that age. LOL!

LOL, I never caught until this time around that Flick's last name is Schwarts, the one Ralphie sold out and said he taught him the bad word. LOL, poor kid! Also never caught that Randy is the one that picked up Ralphie's glasses for him during the fight.

I really hope that you react to Klaus too, is a really good animated christmas movie and almost won an oscar for best animated feature two years ago.

You have to remember he's recalling these events from his 9 year old perspective, including wild exaggerations and a filter of four decades. Also, maybe it's about the giving and the sharing when you're an adult. When you're a kid it's about the presents.

I was only a yr old when this came out and grew up near where they filmed this, it's still a tourist attraction you can walk through it and it's very nostalgic. This never gets old it's simple and yet such a perfect Christmas movie. Glad you enjoyed it 😊

This was my dad's favorite movie. He grew up in the same era and he wanted the Red Ryder BB gun too. He loved the old radio shows and would get tapes of them and play them for my boys on camping trips. They even made a Broadway musical of this movie and it is one of my favorites. The Christmas Story 2 is good. It's set in the 70s.

When I lived with my Mom we would get a real tree every year and the key is to water it so it won't get dry and cause a fire, and the needles fall off if they aren't watered. And they smell good too 😄

Ah, another human introduced to.....The Lamp! For those not in BB gun knowledge, you never, EVER shoot a BB at a metal target because the BBs will ricochet and possibly hit the shooter. they are made of steel

I love the wolf theme from Peter and the Wolf by Prokofiev plays when bully Scut Farkas is on screen. Farkas means wolf in Hungarian.

Hi. Glad that you liked this film. Mrs. Parker’s dinner is usually cold because as soon as she sits at the table her husband or boys keep asking her to get something. She could have told them to do it themselves but I don’t think that Mr. Parker would like that.

The actor who played Ralphie has gone on to become a successful movie producer, he works a lot with Jon Favreau and they produced the movie for Iron man and Elf which he also played one of the elves. I saw a story recently that he went to the house where the movie was filmed and was outside signing autographs and the guy who owns the house came out and freaked out on him. Randy would have been like 5 and honestly when you are a parent with a kid who won’t eat sometimes you will do anything to get some food into them.

Of course the little brother actually ate food in the three years. It just means it wasn’t willingly lol And No the mom wasn’t giving away her food lol it means by the time she finished serving everyone else, her plate of food had gotten cold. That happens when you have kids and a partner to feed first lol

i remember my aunts and uncles would yell at my grandma to sit down and eat, because shed just loiter around checking on people and things on the counter and stove until people started yelling at her to sit down and eat!

"My mother had not had a hot meal in over 8 years" the joke is that she keeps getting up to get things for everybody else that by the time she sits down to eat her food is cold. We crack this joke all the time in my house because I do the same thing.

"You'll shoot your eye out, kid". This is a legendary film, and the house is from Ohio, which is my home state. There's a sequel coming out soon if memory serves me right.

This is my family’s staple Xmas film. Absolutely fabulous. It’s just a slice of life, and I love that. Just a tip- a little warm water will unstick the tongue from a frozen pole.

A lot of the stuff that confused you were common things and events for those of us who grew up in the 40s-70s. It's a different world now.

Fun Fact: At 39:14, That's Jean Shepherd, a.k.a. the adult Ralphie narrator. Also, at 19:23, the man with the wool cap is Bob Clark, the film's director.

This is my dad’s and I’s favorite Christmas movie. He and I quote it all the time. The dad is for sure our favorite character in the movie. We watch it every year during the Christmas Day 24 hour back to back showing of the movie on tbs. I’m so happy you enjoyed the movie! I also highly recommend Netflix’s Klaus. That has also become one of my favorite Christmas movies. It’s so heartwarming ❄️❤️

I took a little vacation earlier this year to Cleveland Ohio to visit the Cleveland Browns Stadium and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and to my surprise there is a museum in Cleveland that is in the house that they filmed this movie in, with all sorts of memorabilia and interesting and fun stuff also a really silly gift shop where I bought a few Christmas Story items. They even sell the the crazy leg lamp and the pink bunny pajamas.

If you like this movie and want more movie based on the stories of Jean Shepherd (the narrator) I recommend the 1990 movie "My Summer Story" (It was originally called "It Runs In The Family" but they changed the title). Since they made it 7 years after this movie and the actors had all aged up, almost everyone has been recast. But it's by the same director and Jean Shepherd, the narrator from, A Christmas Story, narrates this one the same way. Also, the teacher, Miss Shields, is played by the same actress. Kieran Culkin (Macauley Culkin's brother) plays Ralphie. The movie is another bunch of vignettes strung together with a loose overall plot arc, just like A Christmas Story. It's not as good as A Christmas Story, but like you said, that movie is 10/10. My Summer Story is still really good and gives you more adventures with Ralphie and his old man, told by adult Ralphie, and really has much of the same feel as A Christmas Story. There's another movie, A Christmas Story 2, that came out a few years ago. STAY AWAY from that one! It's terrible and no one who worked on the original movie worked on this one. Then there's the movie that just came out on HBO last month, "A Christmas Story Story". I haven't seen it yet but I have hopes it will be decent because it got all the actors that are still alive from A Christmas Story, reprising their roles as adults in the 1960's with kids of their own. But if you only watch one other movie set in this universe, you have to watch My Summer Story! So glad you loved this movie!!! Best Regards and Happy Holidays!

My mom didn't like me playing with toy guns when I was little all though I did have several cap guns and I'd chose water pistols. She refused to let me have a skateboard, even though lots of my friends had them. I finally got one when I was a little older, like 15.

This was directed by Bob Clark who directed Porky's and Black Christmas (1974), a creepy Christmas slasher.

the flagpole was just a plastic pipe with a vacuum system attached. there was a little hole for the actor to it his tongue over making it look like it’s stuck

My family and I have watched this movie every Christmas day ever since I was little and continue to watch and It's one of my favorite holiday films of all time and is so quotable. Really enjoyed your reaction to it. The tongue to the pole scene was achieved with a hidden motor concealed in the snow which created a vacuum that came from a little hole that was on the flagpole and when the child actor stuck his tongue to it, the vacuum gently held it there to give the illusion that it was frozen to the pole. Also the panoramic shot of their backyard covered in snow and ice near the end of the film, was fake snow because that area where it was filmed didn't get any real snow at the time. So their house was the only spot that looked like it had been snowed on.

This movie is such a classic definitely in the top 3 of the best Christmas movies of all time. Don't watch the sequels because they are terrible and it's not the same people.

I don't recommend checking out A Christmas Story 2 (2012). It was a strange cash grab made decades after the first one, and it really, really shows. I'm sure you've seen the other comments about how A Christmas Story is an autobiographical work by Jean Sheppherd (who is also the narrator). A Christmas Story 2 (2012) isn't based on any of Jean's writings. It's just borrowing characters based on Jean's work. Everything else is... "Quick, A Christmas Story is really popular right now; we have to capitalize on it!! Same movie, age up the characters, take away the charm STAT!" I'm sure someone out there may like it, but it's devoid of the fun and charm A Christmas Story has.

I thoroughly enjoy watching your reaction videos. While this takes place (I believe) in the 1940s, I was a child of the 1960s and the clasps on Ralphie's winter boots were exactly the ones I had on my own rain boots as well as rain jacket. I don't know if they even make clasps like that any more but merely seeing that brought me back in time. I became acquainted with this movie when the Turner cable channels ran 24 hour marathons 8pm Christmas Eve to 8pm Christmas day each year and it was a common occurrence to have the television playing this movie in the background the majority of Christmas Day since our big celebration was Christmas Eve. I think the casting was essential to making this movie a success; particularly all in the Parker household. Because of this movie, I started a yearly tradition of having a Christmas-time meal at a fine Chinese restaurant in my old hometown of NJ (the Hunan Taste in Denville, for those in the area) and while last year I transitioned to Massachusetts and missed this tradition, I am now relocated in Florida and plan on having that sit down Chinese food dinner this month. It won't be with my two best friends from NJ so it will be different but that meal has become a tradition due solely to this movie and a deleted scene from A Harold and Kumar Christmas.

This is a childhood classic for me. Still a homely family Christmas movie, the older I get the more I identify with pops. Gotta react to the sequel that just recently released, it's a true sequel to this.

This is my favorite Christmas movie that I watch on Christmas Day every year. I’m so glad you loved it. I love how it’s told from the point of view of a kid, so everything is overly dramatic and a big deal. I think that’s what makes it so funny for adults watching it. You definitely need to check out the new sequel that just came out this year. I just watched it and it’s really good. It was done very well and I bet you’ll enjoy that one too. I wouldn’t say it’s better than the original but it’s a an excellent sequel, 30 years after the original story. Merry Christmas to you!
