Watching Airplane for the FIRST TIME had me Crying!!! 

Loved they actually got Ethel Merman to play herself pretending to be a guy pretending he's her😂

I always thought that "The fog's getting thicker... and Leon's getting larger" was just a random silly comment. But just recently I was told that Leon's was a chain of furniture stores on the west coast, and when they added new stores in the '70s, their ads said "Leon's is getting larger."

The announcers arguing at the start of the movie were a real married couple that worked as announcers at LAX.

You've got to watch this through the ending credits, the man in the cab pops up and says, "I'll give him another 20 minutes". lol

Also I like references to drinks, "we're bombing the storage depots at dacquirri" and he also mentions he was "stationed in Drambui"

It's a movie you need to watch multiple times to get all the gags and still miss some. It's still hillarious no mater how many times you watch it.

Leslie Nelson’s Naked Gun series is absolutely hilarious

I love that the old woman who translates for the jive talking passengers was played by Barbara Billingsly, better known as June Cleaver, the mother of Beaver on the late '50's TV classic Leave It To Beaver.

When Captain Over is standing by the magazine rack, did you notice that the label on the section next to him reads Whacking Materials? All the magazines are adult themed. Every time I watch this movie I find details hidden in it.

It’s funny how that a lot of young Americans don’t get this movie. The sarcasm goes over their heads. But I have seen time and time again young foreigners watch this movie and laugh hysterically. They get the jokes, even though some of them are too old for them to understand since they do reference American pop culture from over 40 years ago.

Yes, rewatching this film is absolutely worthwhile. Like you mentioned, there is so much happening almost non-stop that you miss things. And some of the humor can be pretty subtle so you tend to not notice it the first few times.

Leslie Nielsen was considered a straight actor until he did this film. It was his deadpan delivery of the comic bits that led to his involvement with his many comic projecrs like the Naked Gun film series.

This was made during the era of dramatic disaster/catastophe movies (ex. Airport, Airport 1975, Posiedon Adventure, Earthquake, The Towering Informo) of the 1970s and this movie was such a contrast to themt so it made it even funnier. Also, many of the main characters were actors who were known for their serious roles and this movie was such a departure for many of them. That added to the absurdity of the film and made it even more enjoyable. A great funny movie and it was a pleasure seeing it again through your eyes. BTW, don’t call me Sherly.

Some of my favorite, more subtle gags are: 1) There are dozens of jars of mayonnaise behind the doctor at the Mayo Clinic, which is a real and prestigious hospital. Somehow, I must have seen this film at least a dozen times before I finally noticed this gag, which isn't all that subtle. 2) It does not make sense that a film made in 1980 has a younger character who flew in World War 2, which ended in 1945. This storyline comes from the melodrama "Zero Hour!" which inspired this spoof. It did make sense in that 1957 film. 3) The name of Rex Kramer's seemingly friendly but actually vicious dog is "Shep," which is the name of the dog in at least one of the "Lassie" films about a boy and his canine best friend. 4) During the doctor's pep talk to Ted, he mentions a character named George Zipp. This is a reference to George Gipp (1895-1920). He played American football for the famous team of the University of Notre Dame. Gipp died from infections which would likely be cured with today's medicine. In the Hollywood, probably fictional, version of him on his deathbed, he asked the coach that one day in the future, when victory seemed unlikely, the team should find a way to "win just one for the Gipper." When the doctor in this film says, "win one for the Zipper," the music playing is the "fight song" for the University of Notre Dame "Fighting Irish" football team. 5) There is a scene where the chief in the control tower asks for the compass bearing of the plane. The radar operator is playing an Atari basketball game instead, and he gives the time remaining in the game as the compass bearing. 6) Every time the jet aircraft is shown flying, you can hear the sound of propeller engines.

I’ve been watching this movie since I was a child and I still see things I’ve never seen before every time I watch it. A+

One thing to remember about any Zucker/Abrams/Zucker movies is that the jokes continue in the written credits.

This is essentially a remake of an old schlocky 50s disaster melodrama. The producers bought the rights to “Zero Hour!” so they could lift whole sections from the script to use with nearly no changes.

Every time you asked "why" I wanted to explain the references and inside jokes, lol. There are so many levels and layers of humor in this film. That's what makes it so great!

SO many people don't see all the 70s personalites like Jimmy JJ Walker as the mechanic checking the oil on the plane

The 4 older actors were all serious dramatic leads in the past, younger people would not understand why them delivering these crazy lines is so funny.

A couple of fun tidbits about the movie. 1. When Kareem grabs “Joey”, the size difference between Kareem and the kid meant he pulled the kid off his feet and literally into his lap. Obviously, this was a blooper and not in the actual movie. And 2. The automatic pilot is actually credited as “Otto” in the credits. As “Otto” sounds almost identical to “auto”

This movie gave some of the older more serious established actors the chance to be seen in a different light…. And genre…. Peter Graves ( Captain Over) …. Original Mission Impossible TV series….Lloyd Bridges ( Seahunt)…. Robert Stack…. Original Untouchables TV series…. And of course Leslie Nielsen.

Julie Hagerty's been in several hilarious classic comedies. Always the same character: Soft-spoken, delicate, sweet-natured lady who calmly accepts absolute madness all around her.

At 4:17 the guy with the flashlights who is "directing" the plane is Jerry Zucker with his brother David, the movie's "directors". Another brilliant inside joke.

They say this movie is the reason the FAA has a rule that the pilot and co-pilot are not allowed to eat the same meal... 😏

“Top Secret” next!!! It’s as much visual and physical humor as “Airplane!” is dad jokes.

It amazes me how many younger people enjoy watching this movie without the context of the 70s disaster movies this movie references.

Keep in mind that in 1980, there were no real age restrictions on movies. In North America, it was rated PG. I first saw it in theatre at 12 years old.

Just about everyone misses the after credit scene

Leslie Nielsen had been a well known dramatic actor for decades - in the fifties, he starred in Forbidden Planet, which greatly influenced Star Trek. Airplane was his first comic role, at least for this kind of wacky comedy, and the rest of his career consisted of similar roles. The movie parodies Love in the Afternoon (the girl running alongside the plane, instead of a train, waving goodbye to her boyfriend), From Here to Eternity (the wave washing over the two lovers on the beach, only this time with kelp), and Knute Rockne, All American (the story about the dying words of George Zip, instead of George Gip - that's why the Notre Dame fight song plays at the end of the scene). "He never has a second cup of coffee at home" spoofs a coffee commercial that had been running constantly for several years at the time, until everyone knew it by heart and was sick of it. The man waiting in the taxi is Howard Jarvis, then a famous (not to say notorious) California politician.

This movie is what gave me my love for sarcastic humor and what made me such a smartass. It needs rewatching a few times to catch everything. I am so glad it was made back then because it never would've been made today.

When this movie came out the nuts in the airports asking for money was a real problem. So when the nuts get beaten up the audiences didn't laugh, we cheered and applauded

The entire movie uses a propeller plane sound effect for a jet engine plane. Always makes me smile as the main gags play over the top.

There is a sequel to this. Airplane 2. It has the same type of jokes coming at you a mile a minute.

This was hands down the funniest movies I've ever seen. Im still seeing references and details i didn't catch the first time i watched it. I wish Hollywood was still this creative and clever today.

They’re punching and beating up the guys at the airport simply because they’re annoying. Back in the day, at the airport, it was heavy solicitation and people constantly approaching you to join a cause or donate to something, etc.

During the 70's, there was a huge overflow of disaster films. Airport had some 5 sequels alone. The Poseidon Adventure and The Towering Inferno were two big movies of the time. This movie was a parody of those movies.

80s good time for movies

The nun singing "sock it to me" is funny, and the reason the black guy is throwing up, is because it's a version of "RESPECT" by the queen of soul Aretha Franklin. She's doing it so WHITELY.

The flight attendant was singing a song about the River Jordan to the young girl. The river Jordan is symbolism for death. Crossing the river Jordan is crossing from life to death. Not exactly inappropriate song for a very sick girl.

This was inspired from a 1957 movie called “Zero Hour” Some scenes are almost identical. Of course in this context it’s funny because they play all the jokes so straight. Best wishes.

This is one of my Top 5 favorite movies of all time. I love it when reactors enjoy it as much as I do. You definitely need to watch it again. I think I watched it 3 times before I stopped noticing jokes I had missed.

This movie is so funny! I watched a few years ago, I think during the lockdown or a little before. Brilliant, silly, hilarious. The painting was a realistic painting, that's why he moves for real hahaahhhaha and the doctor was not doing a birth, it was a gynecological exam! 😆 I love those innocent jokes, that's why my favorites tv shows lately are the light ones with humor.

An hour & 27-minute movie "in this day & age" is the equivalent of a Video Short!

Saw this at the theater when it came out and I couldn't breathe at times from laughing. If you like this movie, may i suggest the 1985 Comedy, CLUE. Hilarious and great cast. Tim Curry as the butler, well, you don't get any better than that!

Amazing reaction! I watched this back in the 80s and have watched hundreds of times since. The 'staying alive' scene is still one of my favourites, me and my mate kept rewinding the bit where Ted jumps back on the dancefloor and you hear a springboard sound... we creased up keep repeating it and we wore the VHS tape out at that bit! To this day is still say "What a pisser!" pretty much everyday, and i annoy my friends all the time saying "And dont call me Shirley!". Another line i love (and have been known to work into sentences) is "Nervous?", "Yes", First time?" "No, ive been nervous lots of times!" Its great watching a fellow Brit doing reactions, I do comedy reactions myself and i don't see too many Brits on RU-vid doing this stuff! I also love that you watch classic movies with your son. My son is currently 7 and i hope to follow in your footsteps and introduce him to classic movies on my channel when hes a bit older. Top Secret is another classic, so similar to Airplane, oh and ofcourse you must watch Airplane 2... i still get some of the jokes from the two movies mixed up! Keep up the good work. Funny how some now see him as a stalker. Wasn't even on the radar as that back then. It was considered as not giving up. Many relationships had stories where he pursued her and they went on to long lives together. People also knew the line between healthy pursuit and unhealthy obsession.

This is a movie you have to watch several times. You missed a lot of jokes. I still laugh when I watch this movie and I saw it when it first came out. There are a lot of subtle jokes. In the hospital scene, there is an announcement over the hospital's PA system. It is for the doctor that is in the plane. The background noise of the plane is the sound of a propeller plane, but they are in a jet. You really have to watch everything for the visual humor, and listen to everything for the audio humor. Watch it again, you won't be disappointed.

I'm so fascinated that so many people watch this film and ask, "Why is he/she doing/saying that thing?" The answer is invariably "because it's funny." I think the film tells you pretty clearly with the Jaws opening that the whole movie is just absurd, but people seem to constantly want something deeper. It's like analyzing a fart. Just laugh, and let it go.

There is one last joke no one ever sees because they don't watch the movie to the very end. Marvel wasn't the first to do post credits zingers.
