So glad they didn't go with that ending. Although I also heard that the shaving was meant that he was going to go undercover to bring Camron down 🤷‍♀️ If they went with that end I feel that it would have downplayed the "Oh God what have I done " line. Which I feel was probably the 2nd most powerful single line. 1st of course being unarguable..

I used to have a good friend who, before we met, was a neo nazi. He explained to me that he was lost and angry and someone older basically groomed him to be just like this. Thankfully he never actually acted on it like in the film, or got any tattoos, but once he hit like 20 he had his eyes opened. Now he's the opposite. So sweet and accepting and considerate of anyone he meets. It was hard to get out of though. It just goes to show how these gangs go after young kids. They're predators.

The curb-stomping scene almost always stops me from finishing this film, and I've seen it several times. Mind you...all it takes is to convince people that the Other is "lesser." Even in 2021, the possibility exists in a segregated society.

Affirmative action is real, Harvard University had a lawsuit filed against them by Asian students who were denied even though they scored much higher on tests than Black students. Also happened in Air Traffic control for landing planes, hiring people based off their color of their skin even though they scored lower on testing. I agree I think it should be the most qualified person who should be hired.
@thepeopleschamp9076
@thepeopleschamp9076 2 года назад
Wow... that was such a ridiculous statement. Look the number one beneficiaries of Affirmative Action ARE WHITE WOMEN. I hate to read dumb statements like that, I guarantee you cant provide a legit article stating exactly what you wrote. Because if you know what Affirmative Action is for, you'd realize that Asian Americans benefit from it as well, it's not something created just for black people. Now that you've lied, allow me to correct you. The lawsuit had nothing to do with students of other races being selected over them even though they had higher scores. There's literally no way to prove that if students weren't admitted. The claim is, in seeking diversity Harvard created a quota system, which is illegal. For example, If Harvard said :to maintain diversity we'll allow 40 white students,20 Black, 20 Latino, and 20 Asian students for every 100 qualified students". So let's say 30 Blacks apply, 30 Latinos apply, and 100 Asians apply. Due to their "quota", 80 Asian students automatically get turned away. The issue is not their grades, it's the system itself. It's a fact that Asian's apply to Harvard more than any other minority, and their applications have skyrocketed 200% over the last 10 years.

@Jalynfein 2 года назад
Don't forget to mention how the Native Americans practiced intertribal warfare and slavery and sometimes even cannabilism, long before Europeans arrived. Hell, the Native Americans didn't even have the wheel or domesticated horses and were largely decimated by the Europeans unknowingly contaminating them with smallpox and other diseases.
@thepeopleschamp9076
@thepeopleschamp9076 2 года назад
@@Jalynfein How does tribal warfare and slavery factor into the point she was making? She made the point that they flourished by oppressing her ancestors. If we're being honest here, you can see evidence of her claims everyday, not just for Native Americans, but for African Americans, Asian Americans, etc. The clock that wakes you up for work is evidence of stolen black genius. When you stop at a stop light on your way to work, you see the evidence. Even the tag on your car proves who's land this truly is. Over half of American states have names that are derived from Native American tribes. If not your state, it's very likely that the city or county you live in has a name that was taken from a Native American tribe.

And the thing is that people act like his dad was making good arguments. I don't know how jobs are assigned in fire-stations but people act like it's the same in the school. The two African-american guys who Gott the job might have gotten it because they were african-american but it also would've been because they scored highest out of all the african-americans who took the test. And how does he know who scored higher? \But the main thing is, he says it should be the best man for he job and then he's mocking a teacher in front of his kids calling him "mr-two-phd's" and instantly starts calling it pushing an agenda because he introduced new books to the curriculum. If a man has two phd's he could be teaching at a university not a high school, no we don't find out what his phd's were in but we can assume they had something to do with literature. And if the school was that desperate for teachers in the first place they should still be grateful that they got him. There are hundreds of good books in the world and twice as many mediocre or even bad ones, choosing one over the other either as a set reading list or as a personal reading list does not mean that one is better than the other or that the others "aren't good enough anymore". And besides, in school reading lists change every few years, how else are they going to make sure the students won't just cheat on papers or tests? And he tells his kids they need to question things that Dr Sweeney says but as soon as they question him, meaning as soon as they say 'yeah maybe' to what he says he instantly says "No" like he's saying "No, don't question me, I'm right". Some people seem to genuinely think that he made good arguments with one racist comment but his whole scene showed the father was a racist. Yes he did an important job that required bravery as a firefighter, but he was still a racist.

Universities give blacks like 150 free points that Whites and Asians don't get and most companies are forced to have certain quota of diversity hires, they often cannot qualify, so the requirements are lowered but the quota for diversity hires is not. You can see everywhere you look a massive over-representation of the percent of certain races and sexual orientation than what is the per capita make-up of the U.S. Just like in advertising, including the push for mixed couples.

Tim I was looking forward to your reactions and comments for this film a little more than most of your film reactions . This movie strikes a cord with me because of my Cherokee ( dark skin Indian ) mixed nationality . Indians and many Caucasians did not have a great past together and even today... things sometimes get a bit tense . For many there is so much to dissect and learn from this film... there is so much meaning behind it all . Even when someone believes in something with passion if it doesn't come from a good place that will come to light . In the end of it I had the strongest feeling that if anything bad happened it was going to happen to Danny in order for Derek to learn the consequences for his actions.... he took a life and he was proud of it . He later regretted it but that was after the fact ; I was not full on sure if anything bad was going to happen at the end ( I was hoping for a happy ending ) . I went through a roller coaster of emotions with this film and cried thru a few scenes . I agree with your reactions and comments for this film and I am really glad you watched this . I’ll explain affirmative action as you don’t get the concept. Government introduced laws allowing minorities to get hired for certain jobs or go to certain universities(without asians) even if they would score lower than the white people. The logic being that this would help decrease the crime rates in minority neighborhoods as people would have jobs to buy food and goods and other youngsters would have role models like policemen, doctors or firefighters instead of drug dealers or gang members.

The guy at the beginning standing in the porch looking out had a pistol in his hand waiting to use it if anybody caught them. I don't think you noticed that. I say that because you implied the only reason for shooting was because of the robbery, but if he would have opened that door without shooting, he would have without a doubt been the one that have gotten shot. I got stabbed when I was 18 and shot when I was twenty-three, and both times were from people I didn't even know trying to rob me.

Its crazy how normalized racism is. I once shared some beer with a homeless dude before a concert and we talked about Nation of Islam and Farrakhan. He kept talking about sticks. Im like what are sticks? He said you know honkys white people. And im like well i just learned a new racist term.

Love your reactions man, I can’t get enough. I highly recommend the King on netflix if you haven’t seen it, a brilliant medieval period piece based off the Shakespeare play Henry V, Timothy Chemelet (?) literally brought so much life and emotion to that character. It is a bit slow but 💯 worth the watch!

nice you finally got to this masterpiece as well :) definitely one of the best movies ever, up there with the likes of Schindler's List, 12 Angry Men, The Green Mile, Saving Private Ryan, its so well acted, so well written, its such a great touch to do the past stuff in black and white, it hits you hard, it feels authentic, it feels real, a great story, its a worthy watch for everybody :) the ending was very well done, they kept it super tense till the last moment :) mainly love the fact that this movie is really focusing on the human aspect, their emotions, mainly hatred, its just not trying to show us racism, skinheads, nazis, or whatever, any sort of discrimination, its about the fundamentals, its all about hate, the never-ending cycle of of hatred :) another great film you might have not seen yet is One Flew Over the Cuckoo Nest, starring Jack Nicholson, hope you get to that one too, its awesome :)

Edward Norton as a method actor and a highly sensitive person IRL went through literal physical and psychological trauma as Derek Vinyard even worse than as "Jack" in "Fight Club".Afterwards, his OCD and insomnia went through the roof and he would rewrite "The Incredible Hulk" in the middle of filming which got him and Director Louis Leterrier fired from the MCU by then-new MARVEL President Kevin Feige.

Killing Danny was more of a punishment to Derek than killing Derek. Derek will have to live with that hurt and regret for the rest of his life. On the plus side, Derek can build on race equality in all aspects in life. Best if he moves his family away and starts over. Thanks for reacting to this important movie.

12:06 And by your own logic Dereck what makes you an expert? What gives you the right to say that their methods were appropriate if the teacher doesn't have the right to say that the policemen actions were excessive? Can you not hear how being hypocritical you're being through the whole scene? He says that his sister needs to learn how to question things and how to listen and then dismisses everything she says like he's saying 'no, shut up, I'm right and you're wrong' and seems to genuinely think that telling her to 'get your head out of your ass' counts as a mature argument.

29:00 I agree it should be about whomever is best. Unfortunately at the time affirmative action was a major focus, and it wasn't always a positive. Don't get me wrong. There are definitely places where it needed to happen. But there were times that it happened that it didn't need to The best person for the job should get it regardless of color/race/gender/ect. But keep the era in mind for the movie. Now they are trying to push the same attitude for different reasons, doesn't make it right........

No, affirmative action probably got a lot of people jobs even though they weren't the best for the job. Simply because executives were forced to hire people for attributes like race, gender, etc. But that doesn't mean that affirmative action is bad. The point is that, while in the beginning, a lot of wrong people will get a job, over time, people will realize that race, gender, etc. don't matter that much. People will get used to the idea, that people from different races, genders, etc. can do the job just as well. It's about personal experiences. Just like Derek's personal experience with Lamant changed his perspective - affirmative action will change the perspective of people over time.

1) Saw this back when it came out in '98. Being bullied and intimidated, at school or in public, let alone armed/aggravated robbery and invading your home, regardless of race, are straightforward threats and pretty legitimate grievances. Let alone say, experiencing a parent being murdered. What I think the movie got very right about racism (both at the time and today) is how readily it hides behind such grievances in order to give itself legitimacy. But I thought the movie oversimplified though how much more complex it is for a "smart kid" like Derek to get sucked into the neo-Nazi world and ideology, with explanations like "Well, his dad was racist, so that, along with Cameron, is where he got it". Like.. really? Derek was stated to be an academically good student, respected and even admired his teacher and principal, a black man, *Dr.* Sweeney, but he puts on a swastika tattoo because his dad told him his own perception of workplace affirmative action as unjust discrimination? I'm the same generation as Derek (and Ed Norton). We all had/have one or both parents who had/have prejudiced views of other races. A) The vast majority of us all saw through it (We love you, mom and dad, but.. you're wrong), and B) every instance I know of neo-Nazis at that time, whether personally or from new stories, their backgrounds and life experiences suggest many, *many* more years of indoctrination and manipulation than what Derek had, or Danny especially. And my issue with the movie (at the time) was how it suggested, perhaps unintentionally, that intelligent, educated kids can be turned into neo-nazis from so little. (Nowadays, I don't know.. It seems like it doesn't really take all that much for people to either become as racist as Derek was portrayed as getting, let alone Danny.) 2) Here in California, we have castle doctrines but even within the home there are specific circumstances when deadly force can and cannot be used. I'm trying to remember if they were equally as restricted as today when this movie was made. I want to say no. By today's standards, Derek probably had legitimate justification (legally) to shoot the first robber (or most legitimate). But the others who were fleeing his property, let alone whichever one he executed by the curbstomp.. 3) (Neo-Nazi leader Cameron was played by Stacy Keach, who was the kind prison warden in Prison Break.)

It's all good to say if someone is running away, then let them go. It doesn't work that way for police, if you pose a threat like being armed and turn and run they can still take you out. If you live in areas where prople have gang issues and robberies, letting people run off, they usually are not caught and hey, they know where you live to come back and do a drive bt or burn your place down, among other things to your loved ones. So yeah it's great to say, oh ok your running away I'll just go back to bed. Not!
@gluuuuue

@@willahelmpowers4835I was talking about legal standards, then vs. now, in the scenario of self-defense in one’s own home and on their property. Not general law enforcement. Police are vested with the legal power and authority to enforce law. Private citizens aren’t (whether any of us like that or not).

The fact they show Derek got 3 years for killing three shows another aspect of America. A black man who did the same crime would get alonger sentence. Maybe even life. And what makes it worse is Derek has the right to defend his property. But the fact he kept shooting and then curb stomped the guy shes it was not just simple self defense. And yet he still got 3 years only. If someone is robbing your home and you shoot them (depening on the state), you can shoot them. But if you walk up to them and finish them off with another shot, then it turns from defense to murder.

I noticed that you laughed when the black dude was talking racist to Seth on the basketball court yet every time Derek spoke hate you point out how wrong he was whilst talking over him. It’s not that I disagree with you, Dereks speeches are uncomfortable and his misdirected hate is evident however your reaction of either laughter or literal flinching dependant on who the shade was pointed at, shows that in todays world, it’s ok to be hateful as long as it’s pointed at white people 🤔

This movie's such a dumb cartoon morality play. 13:00 why does Derek start shoving food in her mouth? So the audience is made to know whatever seemingly reasonable points he just expressed about crime, the self-fulfilling prophecy of black victimhood, etc. are actually super duper bad.
