Because it's talking animals, Babe is often mistaken was a typical "kid's movie," but it's surprisingly much more mature and intended for adult audiences than you'd think.

@@Grimium Too many people use CGI as a scapegoat and I'm pretty sick of it. I see a lot of perfectly good movies with great CGI get blasted for "overuse" when other movies use it as much if not more and nobody says anything about it - with the exception of people who are just snobbish about everything - because those movies are considered "cooler" by the mainstream. I think it's an unhealthy attitude to have.

@@HobGungan I understand what you mean cuz CGI has its place, but the fact that so many movies rely heavily on CGI over practical effects instead of working in tandem simply because it's cheaper to use CG has been a detriment to movies overall. It definitely LOOKS cheaper and it takes you out of a movie. That's why movies like, say, Fury Road or Pan's Labyrinth which use practical effects WITH CGI get so much accolades. It's visually breathtaking

I LOVED this movie so much as a kid and still do!!! And with one of the most magical soundtracks ever. The leitmotif we hear throughout is actually from a piece that way predates this film, written by classical composer Camille Saint-Saens! The music fits so perfectly with this kind of heartfelt folktale, I'm so glad the film creators used it

Babe Facts: 1. The film was produced by George Miller who for him this was a change of pace as he has done all of the Mad Max films, 2. The film was nominated for multiple Oscars and won for Best Visual Effects which was done though real animals, cgi, and puppetry through The Jim Henson Creature Shop, 3. The voice of Babe will be familiar to people who grew up with multiple shows as Christine Cavanaugh has voiced Chucky in Rugrats, Dexter in Dexter’s Laboratory, Gosalyn in Darkwing Duck and many more, 4. The other Oscar nominations came in the form of Best Supporting Actor for James Cromwell as Farmer Hogett you will know him better as Professor Callahan in Big Hero 6, he unfortunately lost to Kevin Spacey in Usual Suspects, 5. It was because of the film Cromwell became a vegan and the film as a whole helped raise awareness for how pigs are treated and bring about a rise in vegetarians, 6. The main theme for the score throughout the film especially in the finale is a rendition of Camille Saint Saëns Organ Finale along with the song Hoggett sings is set to that theme, 7. Other Oscar nominations came in the form of Best Picture and Director which it unfortunately lost to the less deserving Braveheart for Both, best adapted screenplay (lost to Sense and Sensibility), art direction (lost to restoration), and film editing (lost to Apollo 13), 8. The whole thing regarding the password and how Babe treats the sheep is to show that the way things that Rex and Fly work with the sheep by yelling, biting and calling them idiots doesn’t work. It is through the understanding and wanting to be civil that Babe was able to work with the sheep and as a result win which was also one of the main points of the film in that how a simple and kind hearted pig was able to win over everyone and show how things are usually done don’t work, also no scenes had to be cut by showing Babe being with Ferdinand it was showing how he was able to make a friend when no one else would want him and the rest of the animals are barely in the film as the focus is where it should be on the pig, the dogs, the sheep and the farmer those four main components are what make the film and make it work so well. I cry everytime I watch the film and it breaks down the prejudice system the animals have for example where both the dogs and sheep thinks the other is stupid and there is more to one’s worth than surface layer and you can be anything you want to be, not having to be what life expects you to be This film 100% deserved to win every award it was nominated for especially Best Picture not the overblown Braveheart piece of shit,

Oooooo! This was my childhood! It’s legitimately surreal watching this as an adult now. Forgot how equally silly and equally morose this film is, from where mice sing in accapello to the threat of death constantly hanging over Babe. It’s a strange tone that somehow works here. There’s also a sequel called Pig in the City and that movie is even *more* stranger, but I had fond memories with that movie. Fun fact: the voice for Babe was done by Christine Cavanaugh, who did voice work for a lot of cartoons like Chuckie from Rugrats, Gosalyn Mallard from Darkwing Duck, Bunnie Rabot from Sonic and the eponymous character for Dexter’s Laboratory.

It’s funny. The way they make the animals move and express themselves are much less furnished and fancy than say, The Lion King remake. And yet there’s not much more they actually do in comparison to give the animals expression, and I’m trying to piece together why it works so much more HERE than ANYTHING that remake did. And the only thing I can come up with is that this movie uses all the other facets of the scene: music, color, lighting, cinematography, etc. to do what the animals themselves can’t convey. Just now realizing while watching this again that they really put the music to work on setting the mood. Very nicely done. 👍🏻👍🏻
@anonview
@anonview 2 года назад
I think it also has to do with movement. After all, animals have joints and body mass. Add their naturals instincts, and you expect them to move/react a certain way. They express their reactions through these body movements. The thing with LA Lion King is that the animals still move like animated characters even though they look hyperrealistic, which makes them less believable. You don't encounter this problem with, say, Narnia, because Aslan still had an 'animated' face. Hence, Aslan's movements complimented his expressions. 🙂

When Hoggett says “That’ll do pig” it reminds me of the scene in Shrek after he and Donkey cross the bridge over the lava and he says “That’ll do Donkey.” I wonder if it was a reference to this movie.

15:16--15:30 Don't worry, Nick. Hoggett said that stuff on purpose. Tv tropes revealed he atcually didn't want Babe killed because he actually grew attached to the pig. You know, like a family member.

Haven't seen this movie in years! And now, already at the start of the movie, with the music, I just know-- I'm going to cry 🥺😹 which is NOT new on this channel, hahah, I really love your heartfelt reactions, Nick 💖

And I'm curious as to which Charlotte's Web you're planning on watching? There's the animated one from the 70s that I recall watching repeatedly as a kid. :D But if you're completely new to the story, I would definitely reccommend the live action one made in 2006. I personally think it's the better introduction to the story and it seems to be following in the steps of this movie - and I think it succeeds! ❤️ Plus, a score by Danny Elfman. 👀

I wish Nick could read the book that inspired this movie. I have a condensed version that my mom got for me. And I still remember the version of the password from that novel: "I may be ewe, I may be ram, May be mutton, may be lamb, But on the hoof or on the hook, I ain't as stupid as I look." 🙂

28:52 😆 34:31-34:46 that’s my favorite scene, when he cheers babe 🆙 40:16 congratulations 🎈🎊🎉 40:35 someday, you’ll watch the sequel. 40:43 that’s the same line to donkey from Shrek.

Funny thing, the actress playing Mrs. Hoggett is much younger than James Cromwell, but I can't imagine anyone else in the roll.

I love the animated version of Charlotte’s Web so I hope you are watching that version. Without mentioning specifics some of the songs really stuck with me.

Watching this childhood gem of mine many years later again, I was surprised how mature it actually was in many ways. It's package might look child friendly, because of the talking animals but we get a lot of serious themes here, like classism (every animal has a purpose), racism (dogs see almost all animals as below them, except for humans), breaking the mold ánd exceptations (a pig becoming a sherperd's dog) grudges and loss. Fly starts out as a product of her species, as to say. Dogs see themselves as superior to other animals because they believe others are too stupid. Only humans are above them. But as she takes in Babe as her son, her believes get challenged. She tries to mold Babe into a dog, something he simply isn't. And he finds his own way to still fullfill a dog's task (asking the sheep instead of forcing them). How? By being KIND. Pigs are shown no kindness, as stated at the very beginning of the movie. yet this pig manages to change the view of many by exactly doing that: showing kindess. Babe gets told by Maa that dogs (referred to as 'wolfs') are viscious killing machines. He gets to witness this first row with Maa getting mauled to death by dogs, yet he still sees the good in Fly. She is his mother after all. Rex is a whole other story. Fly clearly sees what happened to him as confirmation: sheep truely are stupid. And both hold a gigantic grudge against stupid animals. It's the whole reason why Rex was so insulted when Fly suddenly encouraged Babe. She did this though because the farmer saw potention in Babe, and she places farmer Hogget above all else. And then there is the whole matter of purpose. Babe has no real clue of what others preach a pig's purpose should be until his interaction with the cat. She practically spills it out for him: Pigs are to be eaten and that's the end of it. Why you think Babe's real mother didn't even bother to name her piglets? Because it wouldn't matter if they end up the same way she does :( Pigs are seen as products. By humans, but even by other animals as well. Fly doesn't even deny it, and blatantly confirms what the cat said is true. No sugarcoating. Kids can learn a lot from this movie.

Babe the pig's speaking voice was originally going to be done by a child actor. However adult voice actor Nancy Cartwright asked to audition for the part and was given the role. She is also the voice of Bart Simpson.

I was just thinking about this film today, nice to see you introduced to it. While not one of my favourites, it stands out in my mind a lot for highly memorable moments :)

This movie was my childhood and i still love it. The duck Ferdinand was my favorite character and the scene where he and Babe woke up the cat cracked me up as a kid and still does as an adult. Watching it again as an adult, I noticed Ferdinand said “I tried to do it with the hens but it didn’t work” 😹 And fun fact: Babe’s voice actress also voiced Dexter in Dexter’s Laboratory.

Just so you know: this movie was nominated for BEST PICTURES at the Oscars! And it really should have won over Braveheart. It’s so well put together! Another fun fact: the guy who directed mad max produced this movie, and directed Babe 2.
