In 1988, no one thought Bruce Willis would ever be an action hero. He had spent the last few years charming the nation in "Moonlighting," one of the best, funniest TV shows of the 80's, The only reason he was able to make "Die Hard" is because his "Moonlighting co-star, Cybill Shepard, became pregnant and put the show's production on hold.

This WAS Bruce Willis' first big hit too and what solidified him as an action movie actor/star too. If you check his filmography he pretty much did only uncredited bit parts before this. In fact that's part of why the movie works and how it was intended: John McClane is NOT supposed to be a macho action star but a relatable struggling everyman. (This is also why the Die Hard sequels didn't quite manage to capture the same quality and spirit.)

"is that where the line comes from?" Yeah... it may sound like a myth but back in the 70s, 80s, and even into the 90s we actually had people coming up with new and fun stuff that mostly now serves as templates for references, memes, and remakes.

I think it being based off of a book, helps it being more well thought out then a typical action movie. The book "Nothing Lasts Forever" was a sequel to "The Detective". The character's name was not John McClane, it was Joe Leland and he was like 70 years old. The wife was actually his daughter and she fell off of the building with Hans, who's name was Anton Gruber. Those are the biggest changers from the movie.

I never get tired of genuine Alan Rickman worshiping because the man truly was that good & deserves all the praise. Indeed, his voice was so iconic & so was the way he spoke as well. The master Shakespearean in him was what made him so appealing & masterful. His energy in the way he walked & moved. His little eye movements. His sex appeal. Alan was such a true gentleman, hence why even his villains (which aren't in fact that many) had so much class & that's why we still remember them. And his sense of humor, my goodness! Can you be any more British? Alan left us way too early, it's hard to this day to click that he's really gone. He made our lives & entertainment so much richer. Everywhere he went - Die Hard, Prince of Thieves, Harry Potter, the Tim Burton films he was in, everything - he made it all so much better. And he rightfully deserves to be compared to Morgan Freeman, both in iconic voice as acting.

Just a little trivia note. The actor who played the older brother, who wanted revenge, was played by Alexander Gudonov. He was one of Soviet Russia's most famous ballet dancers. On a trip to New York he defected to the US. For several days there was an ongoing international incident at the airport, while American officials tried to get his wife off of a Russia bound plane. She decided to go back to the Soviet Union, or so she told the American authorities. Gudonov danced in the u.s. for a few years, but also did some acting. He died in 1995 due to complications of chronic alcoholism. RIP Alan Rickman.

When this came out, I was in high school and Alan Rickman became an instant hero of mine. Especially at that time, I was doing a lot of plays and musicals in school and wanted to be an actor. Hans Gruber was just too cool. This film was Bruce Willis's first action film and made him an action star. He had been a comedic and dramatic actor and TV star on a TV show called 'Moonlighting' and had done a couple of films before this...but 'Die Hard' was the career-maker for his career. He went from being a pretty damn good actor to movie star instantly! It was also Alan Rickman's first major Hollywood film. Before he did 'Die Hard', Alan Rickman was primarily a stage and television actor in England. As they were casting for this, Alan was on Broadway in a play called 'Dangerous Liaisons' (which became a film starring John Malkovich in the role Alan played in Broadway, The Vicomte de Valmont). 'Dangerous Liaisons' is a really good film as well, BTW. Anyway, it was his role on Broadway which he had played in London first and transferred to New York and had then been nominated for every theater award for that led to 'Die Hard'.Al Powell, the cop was played by Reginald Vel Johnson, who reprised the role a couple of times in the franchise but he then went to TV in the series 'Family Matters' as the dad (who was also a cop). The terrorist Karl, whose brother was killed and went crazy, was played by Alexander Godunov, who was a famous and popular male ballet dancer before he started acting. "Yippee-Kai-Yay, M--------f--------" did come from this movie! Trust me, I have used the phrase since high school and I was 16 when this came out (I'm 48 now). I'm glad you liked this movie, it's a favorite of mine that I try to watch every Christmas.

I love all the small details that make this movie magical- After Takagi gets killed, One terrorist, Karl, slaps a bill in the safecracker's hand, implying a bet was placed on the outcome of negotiating the codes. Karl loses the bet. Another scene shows a terrorist eyeballing a candy bar and struggling to swipe it while also trying to hold a vigil for security purposes. Lots of gems like these makes the film a classic.

So many things contribute in my eyes to why Die Hard is so great. Love how McClane is at first not trying to even be an action hero and is hiding out trying to get the local police to do it. He has moments where he's really clever, but he also makes mistakes which don't feel contrived, and similarly the villains also get their moments of cleverness and mistakes. And having fewer villains make them feel less like cannon fodder and more like actual threats. This is easily the most intense of the Die Hard movies and the closest I feel like McClane actually gets to dying. The others have their positives (well, except for the awful, awful, fifth one), but the first is on a whole other level. As for Alan Rickman, this was his first movie role, and not only did he nail it, but Hans Gruber is listed as one of the top movie villains and justifiably so. Also, I think everyone was skeptical about this movie cause no one saw Bruce Willis as a big action star as he basically just did a TV show (which at the time was seen as considerably beneath movies) and I think he was in a flop.

What really impressed us when this was new was how hard John McLain had it and how much he got hurt. Not because of any kind of sadist love of pain, but because in an era where unbelievable action movies cliche this seemed so much more believable. After seeing movies where whole firing squads miss a hero who then just guns them down with ease this stood out.

What was most especially great about this film is that it changed the "hero" type. Before Die Hard, most action/adventure films showed leading men who were seemingly indestructible, stoic badasses shooting guns, no real emotion showed, surviving with barely a scratch. But this film showed the hero as a "regular" guy who struggled to survive the events of the film, someone who could be smart, vulnerable AND badass. He showed that men could be scared and still be heroic. The vulnerability was key to making this film so heartfelt. His buddy cop relationship with the guy on the other end of the radio, his talking to himself, his trying to figure out ways to get through it and save his wife and stop the bad guys... all put together made such an amazing film. And after that, we saw a lot of male action heroes who showed more heart and vulnerability. Bruce showed a different and unexpected side and I think that was the foundation that made this movie so great and so well received.
