as mixed filipino, not a lot of filipinos speak spanish itself, but most can understand context of some spanish conversations due to overlap of words. however, a lot of filipino actors (especially back then) weren't considered asian enough to be cast as the asian characters, so they'd take hispanic/latino roles. like vanessa hudgens having to play a latina character, "gabriella montez" so everyone thought she was hispanic/latina and not half filipino. kind of similar how brenda song (london tipton) had to chinese-wash herself (literally changing last name from xiong to song) and fit the asian box the acting industry built for her, erasing her hmong heritage. this is hilariously common in movies with filipino/hmong/other "niche," if you'd say, ethnicities that are not acknowledged by hollywood!
I noticed that too, since Lalaine who played Miranda from Lizzie Mcguire was also Filipino playing a latine character. I remember Dante Basco, Zuko's voice actor and actor for movies like Hook, had to explain he was Spanish/Chinese/Malay, which is how Filipinos thought we were mixed or to contextualize what being Filipino was, since westerners didn't know who Southeast Asians were or where SEA is. I mean, some of us Filipinos are Chinese and/or Spanish descent, so it wasn't off the mark. But not all Filipinos are. Also, nice to learn about Brenda's heritage here.
To add to the list, I just recently learned that Jose De Vega, the actor who played Chino, a member of the Puerto Rican-American gang in the original West Side Story, was Filipino. Not many people in that movie were their character’s actual ethnicities though, so I guess I shouldn’t have been that surprised.
Something I think people don’t give movies like Bring It On credit for is just how well they are able to do camp and satire. The sequels try to do it, but it’s so poorly done. The OG had silly lines (“Missy’s the poo, so take a big whiff”) but it was able to strike the balance with a strong narrative, great acting, and juuust enough realism to make it work. The others are just so over-the-top wacky and overly simple, like it doesn’t even try to strike a balance.
I think the trope is called warm place warm lighting, I know it as the Mexico piss filter. It is ridiculous but it has some logic behind it, the yellow makes the place look warm, movies also use cold light if they're set somewhere cold. It doesn't make sense however when you're filming two different schools in the same area!
I'm sorry but you have lied. Bring It On Again literally made the perfect sequel... set us up with high expectations for the disappointment that is the rest of the series. You have lied but Jesus Christ forgives all those who trespass against us. This was trespassing on the simple comedy of early 2000's coming-of-age college stories. Jesus still loves you tho ❤
I simply LOVE all of these videos and I know she mentioned a new editor from the saltburn video but the random memes and vine booms were so shocking everytime 😭
Yeah, I know they just started working together and I'm sure we'll see improvements over time, but using the Windows error click noise approximately 50 times in one video was wayyyyy too much. Some of these edits were giving "just discovered iMovie." 😬
I didn't like it at all. Previous videos were like we all are just chilling with her whereas now it's like they are doing anything and everything to be generic. Especially hate the back and forth zooming effects 😒
Filipino here; we don’t usually speak Spanish. It’s not like that, it’s that some words are borrowed from Spanish. There’s like some phrases and words that are the same but overall Tagalog is the main language
I think the Asian Love Interest was also a love interest in an Australian ballet show called Dance Academy. Fun show from childhood just like the first 4 of these Bring It On movies.
fun fact bring it on 4 isn't just a romeo and juliet vibe but actually based on west side story (the sharks vs. the jets) we get a glimpse of this in the alley way "fight" scene
I've been watching Kennie for years, but found this video a little hard to watch with all the editing. Did anyone else feel the same? I hope it's dialed back next time because Kennie's so funny on her own.
The bring it on series reminds me of being in hospital and then resting at home after a 10 hour surgery. I was so out of it but I watched it so many times, it’s ingrained into my soul at this point 😂
100% agree with your ranking, these are my guilty pleasures but they’re so fun and stupid 😭😭 I could rewatch your top 3 and I’d even want like 15 more mins of them to properly develop the love interests / friendships lmao
Honestly you're ranking is exactly the same as mine just all or nothing is tied with fight for the finish because it's just messy and it's really a guilty pleasure this series just holds a special place in my world of camp foolishness
Woah. For 20 years I've thought the 3rd movie was the 2nd and I've never heard of the 2nd (or any of the other sequels.) I did love the original back in the day though.
The Clovers "BRR IT'S COLD IN HERE" cheer scene still gives me goosebumps.... As a brown person myself, i thought the Clovers were the coolest and prettiest girls when i was younger!
Me and my husband saw the musical live in London and genuinely enjoyed it, they did a really good job of mixing musical numbers with impressive moves 😅
Please, it’s great that you have got editors but the (overused) sound effects and meme inserts are so not needed, by this point fans keep coming back cos we love how Kennie is as she was, just her talking, laughing and reacting is ENOUGH😭
Okay, I know it’s petty and I’m likely not the first mention- BUT Torrance held auditions because Carver broke her leg in 3 places and was going to be in a wheelchair during Nationals. I loved your video, I had NO idea 7 of these existed!!!
no one can ever make me hate this series of movies (we just pretend the last one doesn't exists lmao) this was my CHILDHOOD! they're the reason I started cheering lol
My favorite character in Bring It On: In it to Win it was Sarah (played by Kiersten Koppel) the punk/emo/goth cheerleader because she shared my name, I thought being punk was cool in like 8th grade, and I thought she was so pretty. Her presence in this movie made me want to get bangs and literally she was my “inspiration” photo when I went to the salon
Honestly bring it on fight to the finish was and will always be my favorite and I’ll always watch it every now and then, it has prima j acting it in and one of there songs, as a half Mexican and white girl I loved watching it and seeing the two step girls interact it was like seeing myself in person in two besides the cheer because that’s exactly how I acted and still do it is hard figuring yourself out when you don’t fit in like the girls in the movie
My older sisters were obsessed with the original! I wasn’t allowed to watch at my age though. When I finally did see it, I enjoyed it a lot and finally understood my sisters’ many references to it! Definitely my favorite so far I’ve been watching them all here though, and they’re not good but they’re a good time hahaha
I'm hoping to join my uni's cheer team next year and I've been obsessing over cheerleadings and training. The fact that you made this video during this training period feels like a lot to me.
G.U. did so much for that first movie to make it what it was, she got so much changed from the original script from just having actually named characters to dialogue, my girl did her best. And recognition to the rest of the cast and crew for being willing to listen to her and make changes.
I feel crazy because as a kid All or Nothing and In it To Win It were my favorite of the movies as a kid😂😂😂😂 like I’ve seen them both at least 50 times
As a woman who grew up watching the Bring It On franchise, I completely agree with this ranking. I could watch the top three over and over again but Cheersmack made my throat itch🙃
I remember years ago thinking when did they make another one I was so disappointed they disrespected my childhood it didn’t even seem like a bring it on movie it seem like one of those teen 2015 movies they don’t know how teens act at all
My favorite is In it to win it. I remember renting at the blockbuster because I was wanting to watch the 1st one. I ended up falling in love with it. I really liked it because I feel like I got to see more cheer, I don't know how to explain it maybe it's because there wasn't any heavy underlining meaning, it was just super cheer focused to me. I mainly rewatch the 4th and 5th one. I've seen all the way to the 6th one.
When I think of Bring it On, I am immediately brought back to 8th grade History class because my teacher Ms. Jessica Thomas told my class that she was an extra on the Clovers. Months later a new student sat down in class telling everyone that he watched the movie and noticed that there was an extra that looked like Ms. Thomas.
I know the editor is brand new at this point, but you might want to fire them now and get it out of the way. It doesn't seem like they're paying full attention to the job.
@@Ashbrash1998 What, you didn't notice the bit at 43:00 where it jump cuts and chops off the end of one sentence and the start of another? "Alright, so, final" "round off this video."
Gabrielle Union actually wrote an article some years ago about her experience on the movie and its handling of racism and the Black characters, SUPER recommend it! Great video!
The last two I don’t count but I love the five. I wish the second one got more credit because college cheer is so fun! But yeah I loved the bring it on movies and I’m so glad you watched them !! They’re my guilty pleasure. Fun fact: when the first movie was tested everyone said they wanted more clovers so they just shot a bunch of insert shots for a trailer but didn’t show the black team anymore :(
Torrance, Whittier, & Carson are counties in SoCal lol Whittier and Carson are meant to be callbacks to Torrance’s name in the first movie In It to Win It is meant to be an adaptation of West Side Story (Jets and Sharks, star-crossed lovers, etc) I had no idea there was a 7th movie!!
As a Latina my favorite was All or Nothing for obvious reasons lol and the original. I didn’t know Milian was in one so now im gonna watch Fight to the Finish. They really don’t make American high school cheerleading movies any more 😭😭😭😭 gimme a football team and cheerleaders i used to vicariously live thru these cus my HS was nothing like this in Miami. I remember watching In it to Win it when I was younger and just liked it cus it looked summer-y and they went to Orlando 😭
I just rewatched the first bring it on and I found it funny how they were based in San Diego California and their school is named Rancho Carne, and their mascot are the toros (bulls) but there wasn’t a lot of Hispanic/latino representation 😭😭
One of my besties name is Torrance because of this first movie, fight to the finish was always my fav cuz poc but in it to win it was close cuz that MAN whew lord
I’m a cheer coach just to assert my bias here, but I do feel like cheerleading gets such a bad rap due to Bring It On and just the Hollywood portrayal of cheer in general. I feel the portrayal is honestly super misogynistic and the reason cheer isn’t taken seriously. I’ll never be down with the portrayal of a sport being stripped down to women hating each other and being fatphobic and racist. I see the real world implications of it every season when bigger girls (mind you I coach at a middle school) ask if they’re allowed to try out. It’s saddening.
Just do add on to that, these movies with led by heavily female dominated casts always displays women as dumb, vapid, and to have the tendency to do ANYTHING for a man. I have to go above and beyond to break away from the stigma movies like Bring It On placed on cheer. The same reason we have to fight to be called a sport. It’s because cheer is portrayed as a club where girls show up to be bitchy to other girls rather than displays of athleticism by a female dominated sport. It’s very frustrating.
as a long time home skillet biscuit (and knowing how tough editing has been on kennie) I feel like this video was jarring to watch. Or that the current editors haven’t actually watched her content before. The camera pans moving with her, the zoom ins, the mixed sounds are really a lot(??) sensorily. It’s hard to stick with the video, but also a bit outdated in style more 2014 esque…. I really want to watch this video I LOVE bring it on but I literally can’t sit through the visual cuts. I hope the editor finds their groove with her content, it’s a lot of work to take on!
In 2008 when they were filming at my university campus I got paid to keep people out of a building and listen to directions on a headset and boy..... I'm so happy.......to see via this video..........that it sure was worth it in the end........................
This video is hilarious and I love you Kennie, but I miss the format of your old videos that didn't have a bunch of YT-style edits and distracting sound effects :( You're still awesome and I'll still watch your videos! I just prefer pure, unadulterated Kennie J.D. Maybe I'm just a cantankerous old lady lmfao
So fun fact in bring it on: in it to win it. They totally used two made leads that weren't very popular. Ashly benson, before she was in pll, this movie was cringey for her. Then we have cassie scerbo. She kinda should have been big in this. Because before (or during?)this she was in a girl group called the slumber party girls. They had bops, also released one album but no matter how good there songs were, plus if you watched cbs on Saturdays. (They also had shows for kids on there.) that's the only way you knew about them.
I love the original bring it on. It still aged well imo. As for the sequels i'd say some are better than others, but none of them can dethrone the original.
War torn sepia or as I also like to call it poor desert city americana. I grew up in a desert and whenever my hometown is shown it’s got that filter but the richer “nicer” towns in my state almost never have it in movies and stuff.
Omg I used to play Bring It On literally everyday annoying everyone in my house cause I knew EVERY WORD. My little sister got me back playing All or Nothing everyday when she was a toddler 😭😭😭
[disclaimer: this comment will be feedback on the editing] one thing that could change the jarring aspect of some of these new effects is pacing. seeing that this video is 40+ minutes, it can feel hard to sit through an increased pace of sounds, clips, and even certain zooms/transitions that are happening somewhat rapidly within a fraction of the video. For example, i found myself having to pause several times to connect back w/ what kennie was saying, when typically i feel like i can pay attention to her videos for much longer stretches of time, when they're of similar duration (or generally just a long form style). i hope this point about pacing can add some detail to what other feedback was mentioned (some of which i agree with), and provide a starting point for what could be tweaked going forward.
I love the “Bring It On” franchise. They r so cringy but so much fun. As someone who has a cheerleading background these movies r gold & so relatable. I personally love the 3rd “Bring It On: All Or Nothing” 4th “Bring It On: In It To Win It” & 5th “Bring It On: Fight To The Finish” movies the best they have better stories with more heart than the first 2 movies “Bring It On” & “Bring It On Again” definitely the 6th movie “Bring It On: Worldwide Cheersmack” . I haven’t seen the last one because I don’t like scary movies.
How did I not realize until the year of our lord 2024 that 3 of the main characters in this series are named Torrance, Whittier and Carson lmao fellow Angelenos am I the lone idiot here
i only ever saw the first one and i'm glad i stopped there >.> also no, filipinos don't generally learn spanish. some of us do; some universities in the philippines teach it. but most of us don't. it's not an official language of the philippines. a lot of spanish words have been incorporated into our language in the same way we've incorporated english words and, before colonisation, words from hindi, sanskrit, malay, some chinese languages- mostly hokkien, i think (a lot of people forget that before we were colonised by spain the islands had contact with other countries). however, they've been localised- e.g. cuchillo becomes kutsilyo- and use our grammatical structure so that a spanish speaker would find it difficult to learn our languages like tagalog or hiligaynon. it's the same as english having words from latin, greek, germanic, etc but english speakers wouldn't be able to speak latin or greek without a lot of studying. tl;dr no, a 1st or 2nd gen filipino immigrant probably wouldn't speak spanish unless they learned it in america. who knows, maybe he had latino neighbours and their families became super close friends v(' .' )v
I watched the original bring it on numerous times as a kid I loved it. I had bring it on all or nothing on dvd it was cringe but I still sorta enjoyed. I recall it having a how to dance tutorial on the dvd. And I haven’t seen the others. Didn’t even know there were movies after in it to win it
I'd rank them: 1. Bring It On 2. All or Nothing 3. Fight to the Finish 4. In It To Win It 5. Bring It On Again (this was the most boring one) 6. Cheersmack (IT WAS SO BAD) I never watched Cheer or Die
I heard the orange filter be called the Hispanic glow and how it’s often used for LA areas that have high Hispanic population. It’s ridiculous and I never understood why it was used so much.
This franchise is the Fast and Furious of girly movies. As someone who grew up loving, Bring It On (OG) I have watched all the sequels up until Cheer-smacked. I saw the trailer and knew it was gonna be hot garbage. I had a viceroy action to there being a hashtag in the title and made the decision that my mental health could not. I am just now finding out through this video that there was another one that came out and a musical. I have to imagine the musical has to be particularly bad because I am a musical girl and I’ve seen Beetlejuice, Mean Girls, and Heathers my algorithm should’ve sent that to me. it did not. Gabrielle Union, Kirsten, Dunst, and Eliza Dushku, all deserve an apology.
it’s obvious you have editors now but in a good way. they really match your style and not too over the top but just enough to still make it feel…kennie. i love it🩵
I’m kinda surprised Kennie never mentioned the fact that EVERY SINGLE movie in the franchise starts with the main character having a cheer nightmare 😂 …idk if it’s just me but I like that they kept that going lol
I’ve always thought the original Bring It On was such a good take on cultural appropriation. I don’t think they even meant for it to be. But the fact that the Gabrielle’s character blantantly rejects the white savior. And the Torrance immediately taking accountability and deciding to make their own routines after being embarrassed. Then in the end they don’t get first place, the black team does but they still learn that making their own routine felt better than stealing. It’s honestly so good, I love it
I think the films writer mentioned it being intentional. I have to look into to it, but I think it was an observation she had made from her experience working for Spin magazine. Don’t quote me on this though 😂
Funny hearing Kenny say "baby Gabrielle Union" considering she was 28 YEARS OLD in that movie.. and she can still got in that cheer uniform today at 50!!!
