Have you seen Kubo and the Two Strings or Paranorman? Those are my two choices for top-tier animated films 🙂 They are PHENOMENAL and both happen to be by studio Laika, the company that did Coraline. Oh, and buckets better than Raya 🤣 as an Asian-American, I was really disappointed and sad by this film when it came out, haha. The plot isn’t that good or the fleshing out of locations/characters

This movie was good but there were so many elements I wish could be explored more, particularly the different locations and subcultures of all the characters.(and their backstories) It would’ve been a great tv series imo (even if a series wouldn’t get the same level of animation quality)

this is why i'm hoping disney makes some sort of sequel or series. the movie is great, but it's trying to cram such a vast world with such a deep story into only 2 hours of content, which leaves it feeling like they tried to adapt a 700-page book into a single movie. if we'd have had more time to explore the setting, and the relationships between the characters, im certain this would have been an even better movie

I would have said the message is the classic "if we want to save the world, we need to work together for it" with a touch of "sometimes, you'll have to be the first person to make a move in the right direction. it won't always work out, but without the first step, we won't be able to walk forward". i like your interpretation a lot too, though!

But that's also a bad message lol? In order to have faith in someone, you have to trust them to an extent. And the person that is trying to say she needs to trust is also someone who has betrayed her in the past, with no signs of remorse or character growth. Great movie, plot and visuals- poor moral lesson imo.

The writers had a blast making researching South East Asian cultures. After they pitched that they wanted to make an "Asiancentric" film, Disney gave them a few weeks to fully develop their concept by sending them to Thailand, the Philippines, and Malaysia. If you watch Raya in its entirety, you'll see some aspects of lore and customs from each of the researched cultures. They came up with the name "Raya" for the protagonist the last minute before finalizing their pitch to Disney and came into being it after they unintentionally overheard some Malaysians use that name in a casual discussion.

It's definitely a good and entertaining movie. I think the biggest issue people have with it is the message it sent- that you should trust blindly and are required to forgive and forget, even after being betrayed by that person with no signs of remorse. But so long as that is pointed out and recognized as not a reasonable solution, I see no issue with people liking it. It has a great plot and beautiful visuals.

The true moral of this movie should have been forgiveness, not trust. True trust does not come from confide blindly in others (like Sisu) but from forgiving theme. The other morale should have been atonement and earning said forgiveness and trust, but let's be onest not once has Namari, nor Fang in general, did anything to redeem themselves for literally causing the end of the world, and earning the trust of others. Till the very end they keep plotting and betray, the only reason Namari returned back to form the gem was that there was no other way around it and everything was already lost.

A beautiful movie. Not just visually, but spiritually as well. It didn't pull any punches. It didn't have some magical plotarmor. Shizu died, and the heroes had to give up their souls and have blind faith to win. This is not something you would see out of Disney, or most studios now a days.

Raya and the Last Dragon is one of my favorite Disney films of the latest releases. The ancient setting of the story is what pulled me in, where people coexist with fascinating creatures like the dragons. Speaking of which, Sisu is my favorite character in this film. Her personality is enjoyable in my opinion, and I like how she she’s willing to put her trust in others (even though at times, it didn’t work out). I really like how heartwarming this film is, the feels hit me every time, especially when I see the families are reunited and all the tribes come together again in the end. Thanks for the reaction, Nick! 🙂 P.S: I really like the soundtrack!

Out of all the minority Disney princesses, we have 3 Asian ones: Jasmine from a Middle-Eastern-inspired land (West Asia); Mulan from China (East/Northeast Asia) and now Raya from a Southeast-Asian-inspired world. Maybe someday we'll get a Japanese-inspired epic musical--though I'd also enjoy another Native American story (preferably pure fiction rather than historical fiction).

Really glad to see you watch this! It's definitely my favorite animated movie of the year! I won't try to ignore it's flaws, but I really hope disney makes more content with it (like a sequel or a tv series), because i feel like its biggest problem was trying to cram such a huge impactful story into 2 hours of content. i genuinely believe that if it was a series, it would have had time to properly explore the setting, develop the characters further and maybe even execute the final message a little better. Otherwise, this movie ends up feeling like a crappy book-to-movie adaptation where half the book's contents were cut in order to have the whole story in one movie (there isn't a book, im just saying that these are the vibes it gives me)

The message is about trusting, but literally the main characters are - Trust her.. *the world and gem fall apart*. NO, you need to trust her more! *Sisu fuxking dies!* The execution of the theme just throws the movie off, which is a HUGE shame. They push Sisus "trust blindly" way too much and basically screw over the main characters reason for not trusting the other chick.

The movie says the word trust to much with can be confusing, but I think more then just blinded trust the lesson is more like "Dont' assume the worst or judge people blindly, but have faith and trust one another" 🥺 Kinda like don't give up on humanity, which seems very appropriate considering when the movie was release, mis COVID pandemic. Edit: Also, Sisu died because she didn't trust her and cause the bow to shoot.

I don't think everyone gets this message about trust. It's not just trusting in someone but being trusted as well. Their world is broken because nobody trusts no one, nobody wants to do the first move and if someone does, the other person doesn't take the risk of possibly (or more likely) being stabbed in the back. Or at least that's how I understand it

@@vinz3022 yeah, thats sort of why I think the trust message gets a little confused and lost during the movie :( It starts showing people genuinely offering complete trust which gets taken advantage of and through out the movie her trust is often used against her making her untrustful which usually nets her the shard and it isn't until the end when everyone has something to gain against imminent annihilation that they "trust" her which isnt exactly the best of messages as it basically becomes "trusting each other is the best thing to do... if you are under imminent threat of death!" Movie wise its great but I think the moral of the story took a back seat to an entertaining storyline.

@@Xenotric yea I get you, the story was great but their delivery of that message wasn't and I understand why the majority didn't like how they delivered it and sisu's naivety didn't help either smh. but yea for me it was a great movie nonetheless, in their "trustless" world, there still are those people who are willing to make the first move and trust someone, she didn't trust boun's food either at first but she still left Sisu with him, he was conned by the baby yet she still hired and trusted her, she also sees their stories hence why she trusted them even though just a little but that's where it starts especially when it is from a complete zero like their world.

The beauty of trust gets a little lost in unhealthy naivety. I love the scene where Raya sacrifices herself, but I wish it had been like Raya had seen the good in Naamari and used this moment to show the others. I don't know why Namari or whatever her name is became potential friends with Raya. She's so toxic, and you can NEVER tell if she's lying or not because she was so good at it. Not friends, but just being chill with eachother would be SMARTER. For everyone, relationship wise especially. Sure, she may not be bad deep down because she likes dragons and wanted a solution for her people, but that's not much at all. Idk maybe I don't see things the way some people do.
@citrusred7064
@citrusred7064 2 года назад
i really doubt namaari had a lot of malicious intent. both as a kid and as an adult, she did what she thought was best for fang because she trusted her mother's judgement. even as an adult she's still following her orders, but you can see her start to doubt her judgements. i don't think raya and namaari end up quite as friends at the end, but unfortunately we weren't given enough time to fully explore their relationship with each other. it's clear they kept some sort of touch over the years, especially after raya stole the scroll, but we never got to see what happened during that time period. neither do we get to see the full aftermath of the events of the finale, so we can't exactly know how things are going between them. it's why im hoping disney gives us more content for this universe, i feel like they could tell a really good story if they had more time to present it. for now all we can do is speculate about what happens afterwards. probably still a lot of distrust/coldness from the other kingdoms towards fang (like how namaari's mom predicted), but if namaari's truly trying to redeem herself she'd probably be making efforts to win back the trust of the others (with genuine intentions this time)

I feel like the ultimate lesson was that blind trust can harm (Raya blindly trusted Naamari without good reason and was betrayed), but blind MISTRUST can also harm. Many of the problems they faced could have been avoided if Sisu had simply presented herself openly as THE Sisudatu instead of remaining hidden as paranoid Raya insisted. Buun and Tong were instantly on their side as soon as they knew who Sisu was, and the Talon Chief, while suspicious of the motives of random women collecting Gem Pieces, never would have questioned at all why THE Sisudatu would be doing it and likely would have handed hers over immediately. There was even plenty of indication Naamari was never going to fire the crossbow due to the long hesitation, since she already didn't agree with her mother on this plan. It only went off because Raya jarred her arm trying to disarm her instead of trusting that Sisu was reading the situation right... which she was. Raya only trusted Naamari in the end because she could see she was just as broken up about Sisu dying, making Raya realize she never would have fired. So there was no reason for mistrust at all this time, and Raya chose not to blindly mistrust her. And wasn't blindly trusting her, either.

I thought it was ok. I didn't like how fast everything happened and I think the 'magic' of this source that helped dragons exist or if they exist because of peoples trust. It could also just be a place where dragons just exist and that's ok but they don't say that. I barely recognized the characters before they moved on to the next one. Ik there's boat boy, baby and monkeys, big buy with eyepatch. Lately names haven't really been resignations with me because I feel like the movies have been moving so fast. I wasn't invested tbh, but it's nice to see other people enjoy it. Not to mention that they butchered the message.

the movie itself is entertaining, but I'm really against the message that it gives. It's basically "hey even when people really hurt you and betray you, trust them anyway! If you don't forgive them and something bad happens as a result, you share half the blame!" Not a fan. It essentially turned into "Trust blindly and fully, even after they have betrayed you and done nothing to show improvement or remorse".

I've got such a mixed love of this movie. On one hand the characters are great and the world is stunning, but so much of the potential gets lost in the execution of the story. There could have been something great in this if they'd focused on forgiveness & healing, not blind trust. I also hate the look of the dragons. There were some great concepts, but instead they pasted on a generic female disney character face and called it a day.

This is a cool movie. I loved it. I really thought we we're gonna see the last dragon again. I got so sad. I really didn't expect the one who betrayed her to be the one who saved the world. Nice twist.

I've seen this one lately too and it's one of those movies I probably won't watch again to be honest. What worked for me? The quality was top notch, as usual, Sisu looked amazing and the fights were great animation, too. What didnt? the message about trust/faith was questionable and the tone of the movie was all over the place. I mean, it's a postapocalyptic tragedy. Can we stop the jokes and smack talking one liners? Also the characters and places felt pretty rushed/flat and especially that baby was SO random and out of place.

I love a lot about this movie, but I have very mixed feelings about the message. Blindly trusting people who knowingly and willingly betrayed you, especially when it led to so much harm both for you personally, and for everyone in general, is kind of a terrible thing to advocate for, especially to children. It works narratively because it's fiction in a kids movie, but maybe let's not teach kids to keep putting trust in relationships with people who have already proven to be abusive and destructive. I did love your reactions though!

I just watch this movie the other day and the story is really good. This film has a lot of inspiration from chinese myths and stories like with Avatar.

The movie is beautifully made, but seriously not everyone can or should be trusted blindly, especially when that person wants to f*cking kill you and actually kill others you love. (yeah sorry but I actually really hate Namari, I completely understand Raya though. I see it more as forgiveness in the end instead of "trust". ) Forgiveness is a whole different thing. You can forgive anyone - doesn't mean you have to trust them again though.

34:38 there is something bothering me here... if druuns are afraid of water... how did they get the whole spine population if their village is surrounded by snow? Because we saw that druun doesn't like the fog which is a form of water... and snow is a form of water too... and for those who might say that the weather might have been changing: 5:23 their village (i think) is permanently covered in snow...

So that's were all the money for Mulan(2020) went. Disney knew that it was doomed from the start when it was announced there'd be no Mushu, no Shang, no Cri-kee, no Grandma, and no songs. But instead, a witch, a phoenix, and stupid chi midichlorians(HELLO!!!). So they spent more money and heart into something original and awesome!

Idk I wish I would’ve liked this movie but it just left me with weird feelings. I like the comedy and the style but the story is just so twisted. I know adults can love these movies just as much as children but honestly I don’t think “blind trust” is a good message for a child to follow and they seem to hammer in the idea of “just trust me and everything will be fine” The characters literally did nothing to redeem themselves, they never held themselves accountable for what happened and even at the end she only decided to put those pieces together after she lost everything, she didn’t care once that raya could’ve had her dad back it was always about her village and their selfishness.
