pumpkin, seabiscuit's stablemate, was actually a gelding (a neutured boy horse), hehe. they wouldn't have put a mare (girl horse) in with him, as it actually could have made him more aggressive and territorial. pumpkin and seabiscuit were the very best of friends and they went almost everywhere together :) btw if you're down for more horse movies, I highly recommend Secretariat (2010), The Man From Snowy River and its sequel (they're old and cheesy but they're pretty famous movies in the horse world and a huge part of many horse kids' childhood), Flicka (2006), Dreamer (2005), and The Black Stallion (1979). enjoyed the reaction! :D

Sometimes I wonder what they're teaching in schools these days. 😆 But yes, for a period of time in the US there was what's called the Prohibition. What was prohibited was alcohol. That was in the twenties and a little into the thirties. But that was how a lot of mobsters like Capone made money then (smuggling alcohol, illegal bars, etc.) That was why moonshining became a thing--people had to make their own liquor and then the cops would raid them. And there were bars they called speakeasies--to get into them, you had to know the password. It's pretty fascinating. You should look it up. 🙂

If you’re ever interested in other horse movies, I’ve got some good ones that I can recommend: -Secretariat -Ride Like a Girl -National Velvet -War Horse -Black Beauty (specifically the 90’s version, I feel like that adaptation did the author of the book the most justice as far as accuracy is concerned) -The Horse Whisperer -Moondance Alexander -Flicka -The Derby Stallion -The Black Stallion Obviously you don’t have to watch them if you don’t want to, but I figured it wouldn’t hurt to recommend them in case you’re ever looking for more horse movies to see! 😁

Interesting fact: the actor who played the jockey who rode Seabiscuit in the match race against War Admiral (George Wolf) is a champion jockey in real life called Gary Stevens. Also, jockeys are not only responsible for guiding their horses. They're also responsible for the horse's safety during the race too. They are the ones who get their horses out of tough, dangerous spots and, in the case of injury, they're the first one to feel it and are charged with stopping a horse running at 40 MPH as fast and safe as possible to check what's wrong. This is one of my favorite movies of all time, and is definitely the best filmed horse racing movie that I have personally watched. So glad you reacted to it!

And the jockey who rode War Admiral was Chris McCarron. Also a very very well known and accomplished jockey. Coincidentally McCarron won the George Wolfe Memorial Jockey Award in 1980.

The guy who played George Wolf in a hall of fame jockey in real life, his name is Gary Steven's. This movie is surprisingly historically accurate as well. The biggest complaints I have about it historically is that War Admiral was actually smaller than seabiscuit in real life (both were small horses, but War Admiral was so small that his nickname was actually "The Mighty Atom") and the final race was dramatized from the original race. Other than that it is amazingly historically accurate. To the point where the match race was actually replicated.
@myroselle6987
@myroselle6987 5 месяцев назад
Actually Seabiscuit and War Admiral were roughly the same size. Both were about 15.2 hands. It was the fact that The Admiral was so much smaller than Man O War (16.2 hands) that led him to be called “The Mighty Atom”. There are some things that are wrong that are important though. I love the movie but… for example, they didn’t know why Pollard stopped urging the horse in his first Santa Anita attempt. It’s true that he was blind in his one eye and couldn’t see to his outside but he would never have been able to admit it as he did in the movie. If he had he’d have been banned from racing. Also Georgie Woolf rode Seabiscuit in his second Santa Anita attempt because Red was injured. They lost by a nose and Laura Hillenbrand’s description of that race is amazing. They did dramatize the last Santa Anita but Woolf did ride a long shot horse called Heel Fly. Pollard also got married at some point in the story and he and his wife, a nurse named Agnes that he’d met in hospital, both wound up living with the Howard’s. Reds leg injury was much more serious even than what’s shown in the movie. They said his leg was like a discolored stick and even a tap could have destroyed it. I don’t mean to nitpick but this story is very important to me for many reasons. As “Howard” said of Seabiscuit in the movie…”This is a horse who won’t give up…..even when life beats him by a nose”. Words to live by..

Please forgive me if this has already been mentioned, but being a jockey is tough. The weight requirements alone are obscene. The things jockeys have to do to meet those weight requirements--you can imagine. And you would not believe the amount of abuse jockeys have to endure on social media. In the past few months, two American jockeys have taken their own lives. (There could be others. No one ever talks about them.) I just wanted to make sure you were aware of that.

Horse racing is so much fun to see in person. Most races are free to attend, so just bring whatever money you can afford to lose for betting on the races, and you'll have a pretty cheap, full day of entertainment. And even with the gambling and available booze, I've never seen anyone act like an a-hole. If anything, for a sporting event people are weirdly friendly. You get to know the people around you.

It's amazing how an animal can bring a country together and be so famous. We had the same with another horse in Denmark, called Tarok. He was a horse in harness-racing, and he would attract lines of multiple kilometers for every race he ran. When he died at only 9 years old, the news that night started with the line "Denmark on 4 legs has died". Even after his death he is immensely popular. A special race in his honor is run every year, and he even has a section in one of the biggest tracks named after him. He also has a movie made about his and his owners' life, much like Seabiscuit.

Some horses like to lead, some prefer to be near the front, some like to hang around the middle of the field, and some like to stay at the back. And often, when they showed his POV while riding, they would only show the left side of Seabiscuit.
