As Giles would have put it: 300 Excellent questions :) Real world answer is that this season is inspired by 80:ies horrors such as The Blob, The Thing, Alien, Day of the Dead and so on.

I know this will probably be unpopular, but I actually hated all the "comic relief" in this season. In my opinion it just disqualified all the good job made to set up a certain kind of tone in the series. A little bit is fine, as it always was among the kids, but all that bickering between Joyce and Hopper literally ruined it for me (as well as the whole, totally useless, russian subplot). At least this season brought us that brilliant character that is Robin, and her chemistry with Steve.

Absolutely agreed! The adult plotline in this season is simply insufferable, and all the ridiculous Cold War stuff was a most unwelcome flashback to everything that sucked the worst about the 1980s. And yes, all the silly bickering is forgivable when it's happening among the 13-year-olds. Having the adults act that way was just cringe-making.
