What kind of seats are available and at what time should I be there?
Your questions answered on this guide to watching a sumo tournament in Tokyo, held for 15 days in January, May and September.
0:31 Approaching the Kokugikan (1pm)
1:15 Type of seating
2:46 Juryo division matches (230pm)
3:37 Makuuchi top division wrestlers (340pm)
4:37 Appearance of the YOKOZUNA (355pm)
8:25 Final match of the day (550pm)
12:25 Yumitorishiki closing ceremony (555pm)
(Update 2023)
Much of the scenes here were shot at the Kokugikan during a tournament in late 2020 when there was restriction on the number of fans allowed. Now all seats are sold like before and the tickets do tend to sell out, especially for Saturdays and Sundays.

Same day/non-reserved seating was discontinued during the pandemic. The same seats (the last row in the arena) are now sold under the category "Reserved D"

Hi! This video is saving my life! Thank you! I’m trying to buy tickets on the chairs on the second floor, but it doesn’t have an option to choose two seats together (it’s like they’re not assigned)l do you know if that means that we get to seat anywhere in the section we choose ?

If you want to designate seats yourself on the ticketing site, available seats will be highlighted in blue. If it is grayed out and you cannot choose, that seat has already been sold.

Hi, thank you for posting this video. Are you able to post the website that you recommend or a reliable one please?… I’m checking online but I’m not sure which one is trustful. Thank you.

www.sumo.or.jp/En/ The official site run by the Sumo Association, including option to buy tickets when they become available. There are many third party sites that also sell tickets but you're likely to be paying A LOT more.
