I know I'm here really late but still I gotta give some credit back to Borat since people told you people were in on it. Only like 3 people from the entire movie knew what was going to happen. The rest were more or less told they're gonna shoot something but that was it. It went so far that some of the people in the movie sued the director as they were unhappy by how they were portrayed in the movie. Everybody of them lost. So yeah your assumption about the movie being real is kinds valid, with some minor details that werent legit.

we are no longer have these type of movies because now we need to have approval from others of what should and should not to be joke about, and it destroys the purpose of a joke since a joke should be objective some people can laugh at the most fucked up things but as long they're not doing a real harm to others i dont see a problem with that if you find something funny you laugh about it and if you dont find it funny just leave it and move on. but hey im the one who talking crazy according to social media nowadays
