I am Welsh so obviously extremely biased, but can't believe a compilation of the best rugby tries did not feature the mythical Gareth Edwards try for the Barbarians against the All Blacks! Almost always referred to as the greatest try ever as I was growing up; I don't personally agree that its the absolute best but in a compilation of 30+ it should def be in there imo. Also, I was so hyped you recommended Super Furry Animals! :D

The more recent 2 tries you saw with "Number 11" (he pushed off three tacklers) wasn't Jonah "The Beast" Lomu but Julian "The Bus" Savea. The number 11 signifies the player in the Left Wing position, not a specific player. Both Lomu and Savea played in that position. Great reaction; as a Kiwi, I love that your have a "thing" for rugby union! 🙂 And, no, you can't punch. You ARE allowed to fend off a player (even in the face) with an open hand.

Definitely a New Zealander who put this together 🤔😜 Some of the NZ tries were good but not worthy of appearing in a greatest try compilation. I’d also suggest it was maybe a bit mis-titled; many of these tries were very important (very late in games and game winning or tries in the World Cup final or semi) but not that amazing as tries. I’d also add that this New Zealander chose to omit a try that I think is an absolute must in a greatest try compilation… it just happened to be against New Zealand. It was by an English player called Jonny May and was from 2014. One of the greatest displays of pace and best solo tries of all time.

10:20 that try was the one that won the game for Japan and is deemed one of the biggest upsets in rugby history (although pretty much everyone who wasn't South African was supporting Japan as they are popular underdogs). In general the clips were likely put together by someone in the southern hemisphere (New Zealand, Australia or South Africa) as they don't contain any clips without a southern hemisphere team in them. There are a lot of great tries between northern hemisphere teams that have been missed off this.

You are hearing alot of people naming the New Zealand #11 as Jonah Lomu. He was in a number of those highlights but there were actually other players in that highlight that have worn the #11 for New Zealand in that highlight since Lomu retired: Julian Savea, Christian Cullen and Reiko Ioane. Unlike many American sports where players can pick a number to wear on their jersey, the sport or rugby jersey numbers actually indicate the position being played by the wearer of the jersey. #11 is worn by the left-wing player.

The DIVE is the easiest and safest way to touch the ball down. There's a 'highlight video' somewhere that is nothing but people getting the ball slapped out of their hands as they reached out to touch the ball down. That's not always the same All Black's #11. Three to five of them were Jonah Lomu who is a Rugby GOAT but there were others wearing that jersey. Unlike in American sports rugby players don't 'have' numbers. The position you are playing on that day determines which number you wear. You could wear #1 one match and then #16 the next. As I've gotten older I've gotten to the point that I can not watch a NFL game anymore. It's not just the fact that the game starts and stops so much, it's the time investment. Due to the relentless commercial breaks it takes 3.5 to 4 hours to watch a 60 minute game. (Even more for a Super Bowl). You can watch an entire 80 minutes of rugby in less than 2 hours.

also the fact you have to touch the ball to the ground while still holding it to score makes diving a much easier motion than bending over

Rugby reminds me of a game we play when I was a kid. It was called Smear the Man With the Ball. You get 7 or 8 guys together in a large field. Throw a football up in the air, whoever catches it runs towards a predetermined goal while the rest of the kids tackle or should I say smear him. Once smeared or if a goal is made you do it all over again. This is the first rugby match I've seen😊❤

You will notice some players after crossing the try line run towards a position behind the posts, because the conversion kick (sort of extra point) is taken directly in line with where the ball was touched down, thus more centre field more goal you see.

3:09 The diving is because to score you must touch the ball down with positive pressure and while being under full control of it. If somebody gets a body part between ball and ground there is no score. I've also once seen a guy holding the ball in the 'endzone' being picked up and carried out of bounds resulting in no score.

Some nice tries, but also quite a few run-of-the-mill; in my opinion. I am of an age where the great tries were from players like JJ and JPR Williams, Cliff Morgan, etc., when Wales was a rugby powerhouse. Not sure what to suggest for books or music ....! Ok, a wierd thought has just occured - the rugby ball is egg-shaped and there is an excellent non-fiction book called The Cuckoo's Egg, by Clifford Stoll, concerning how one of the first hackers was discovered and tracked.

The reason they dive is because to score you have to place the ball on the ground on or behind the try line and the safest way to hold the ball is by hugging it to your chest, so the safest way to score is to dive (it also looks flashy)

I agree, a try fest video showcases the great game way better than hits videos, although there will always be a place for great tackles. I was a number of games, the South Africa v Japan in Brighton was one of the best games I've ever attended, as the commentator said, the greatest upset in the games history. Jonah Lomu is all over these clips, IMO the greatest player of all time. I met him in 2015, lovely man, a matter of month's later, he passed away, such a said loss.

To score a try there has to be downward pressure on the ball as it touches the ground, that's why you see lots of people 'dive' as they score. Not a rule/essential, but it does look bloody good.

3:03 Yes, that's a major reason. You have to release the ball when you get tackled, so getting tackled near the try line is not ideal. There are other reasons too. - Reaching down with one arm while staying upright (like the number 11 at 1:35) is nice when you have the space and time, but in full flight it's easy to pull a hamstring that way. It tends to be the shorter guys like Cheslin Kolbe who can pull that off at speed. - It's also easier to lose your balance in the process and have an uncontrolled faceplant. Better to be in control of the crash landing. - Securing the ball - transferring it to one hand while running like a crazed animal risks fumbling or dropping the ball - Landing belly down helps break your speed. If you're running full speed at the try line, it can be tricky to come to a stop in time. There's been a few incidents over the years of players crashing into camera crews and going over the barrier. - But mostly, it looks good :)
@kjlovescoffee
@kjlovescoffee 2 месяца назад
To add to my comment above, here is an example of why the dive helps avoiding the risk of getting tackled when scoring a try. NZ vs IRE in the 2023 World Cup, Aardie Savea scored in the corner, James Lowe could easily have disrupted him if his feet were on the ground. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FZQjoWkzIjk.htmlsi=s_pPkTxTsbeTBUQl&t=436 By the way, the extended highlights from the world cup (on World Rugby's channel) are excellent. It gives not just the score moments, but a good bit of the play leading up to it. Another one worth watching is the Fiji vs Wales game - it's not every day that the full last 10 minutes of a game gets published, but this was so wild: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HO11jcsi0Vg.html. I think you'll like watching Fiji play - they have a very flamboyant style, they like to keep the ball alive and avoid going to the ground. It's a bit more subtle in this game, but if you look up any of their 7s matches, you'll get a good idea. They're a joy to watch!

If you have a watch list I've got a recommendation in case your interest revisits black holes again. I'm a bit of a fan of Anton Petrov' channel. They guy often talks about news in astrophysics, which is great since succinct spoken summaries are way more fun than reading academic papers. A recent video titled "Bizarre Black Holes Made Out of Light Proven To Be Impossible (Kugelblitz)" [11:05] walks through some of the early history of the topic of black holes in order to contextualize a paper on the theoretical concept of a Kugelblitz. Maybe not the most reaction worthy of videos, but you might find it interesting.

I think a lot of these tries were based more on context, either significant wins over old foes, first wins, world cup wins and the like although I'm glad they had the Campese pass in there (the Australian pass you said you didn't see) which happened decades before those sort of no look passes became routine. I'd recommend watching a try saving tackles video as well. The same channel you watched here has at least one. Lomu was incredible.

I recommend watching the Morgan Freeman, and Matt Damon film 'Invictus' (2009). It kinda shows how worried these huge men were about him. Fiji are another fantastic team to watch. They seem to prefer to enjoy the game, over the result (I mean no disrespect by that, I love Fiji. After the All blacks, they are my next non affiliated team to watch) I think you can easily watch 7's. Fast and fun games. way less technical in terms of all the parts of the game. You're not allowed to punch but if you're in a scrum or maul you're supposed to punch as long as the refs can't see.

15 per side in rugby union. You can't punch, but you can open hand push people away, witch sometimes involves a face. The ball just needs to touch the grass passed the line. The diving is just a safe way to do it without getting caught or pushed away. Also RSA is not Russia, it's the Republic of South Africa. Some of these clips are like almost 30 years old, some are fairly recent. And as everyone else has pointed out, that number 11 is Jonah Lomu and he played for the all blacks from 94 to 01 and was a big deal at the time.

RSA= Republic of South Africa FYI😊 I actually wish Russia played Rugby, I reckon they would compete well after some years of Development.

They were at the 2007 RWC and I remember being impressed that they didn't allow Australia to score against them in the second half.

Russia were at the 2019 RWC in a group with Japan, Ireland, Scotland and Samoa. They secured 0 points. Until 2022 they were also a regular fixture in the Rugby Europe Championship (level below 6 Nations). This competition currently includes Georgia, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Poland

Wow! What an exciting sport. It has elements of soccer, American football and basketball (the passing), with pretty much non-stop action. We Americans are missing out. I think the word "scrum" put us off. 😊

The USA is hosting the Rugby World Cup in 2031. The national team needs work but there is a lot of investment and quite a few Americans have gone pro.

USMLR (Major League Rugby) is about to wrap up the regular season and head into Playoffs. Confirmed playoff teams are currently Houston Sabercats and Seattle Seawolves from the Western Conference and New England Freejacks from the Eastern conference. The other places are still up for grabs I believe.

I've been living in The Philippines for the past 13 years. How has that U.S. rugby league been faring? Does it have TV coverage? I hope it thrives, but I have my doubts.

@@EdMac40 Fair enough. It's niche still, average crowds for the best supported teams are in the 4-7k range, with some teams struggling to get over 1k. I believe at least one match per week is televised nationally, although 4 were this recent weekend. This season has been relatively competitive with only a few "blowouts" (barring Anthem, a team exclusively made up of young US Eagles prospects IE a development team).

@@EdMac40 Rugby League is pretty much none existent but Rugby Union (the sport from this video) is growing steadily. There is a steady flow of former pros going to the US to coach teams after they retire so the money is there.

If you watch Rugby seven, try to watch some of Argentina's greatest moments, and pay attention to Marcos "Money" Moneta, he is one of the fastest runners on the game with a clocked speed of 40.3 km/h or 25.1mph. just for reference Husain Bolt's record is 27.8 mph (44.72 km/h.
