I'm convinced that Stephenie Meyer has some repressed polyamorous desires that she pours into her writing. I'm convinced she can't write book 2 because she backed herself into an ending where Jared, Ian, Wanda and Melanie are definitely about to form a harem.

I've read it for the first time in 2012 and I still regularly reread it, it's such a pleasure to read! Some things are weird but the characters always felt more alive to me than in Stephenie's other books and I love the romance between Ian/Wanda and the relationship with Jamie, and Wanda/Mel friendship
@m.p.6039
@m.p.6039 2 года назад
Whenever I want to feel depressed I just read what Stephenie Meyer fans have to say about her. It's always one misogynist woman after another apologizing for reading books written by women, and ashamedly calling them guilty pleasures.
@trashfire7474
@trashfire7474 2 года назад
@@m.p.6039 I call it a guilty pleasure not because it’s a book written by a woman. I read plenty of those and enjoy them without reservations. I call this a guilty pleasure because the weird relationship dynamics that seem to come up in all of meyer’s books. In this one specifically, something I never liked was the fact that both relationships have an age gap that the characters can’t help but talk about and emphasize, which to me points at something deeper than characters who just happen to have an age gap. And when Wanda gets a new body in the end of the book, there’s a whole emphasis put on the fact that it’s a 16 year old body, while Ian is in his late 20s. Generally, I don’t mind age gaps, but I don’t like the weird way characters linger on it like a fun little naughty element of their relationships. I don’t think having a somewhat negative opinion of this specific romance novel makes me misogynistic.

The book has kind of a special place in my heart because it introduced me to scifi when I was a kid. I think it has some really interesting concepts and relationship dynamics. Though like lot of scifi books and movies it just brushed over the question of colonialism. I do think it addressed it briefly (with the algae planet), but not not in depth enough. I hate how okay the group is with sending Souls to other planets as their solution. A sequel where Wanda and her friends try to help free other planets as well, would have been nice. My favorite parts of the book were when Wanda talked about the other planets, so it would be cool to actually go there.

WHAT TO SAY dear god what to say. i read this right away after twilight like literally maybe two years tops after it came out (and obvs every sketchy thing just flew over my head i think i was like 12?) the thing about stephanie is that she just comes out with CONCEPTS that have this odd sort of allure (like i still think the twilight vampires are fascinating) but the execution is like. ma'am :| now im just sitting here thinking this could've been an amazing book in better hands and with other perspectives (like the whole host thing i think you come out thinking that what they're doing is wrong ofc-although somewhat wrong /because/ they're doing it to humans-but not that the souls are necessarily. wrong themselves? like the mass suicide thing has horrendous implications and wanda just. breezes past it. like, my worm??? a little moment of silence???) i really loved it for the relationship between melanie and wanda tbh i think that's rlly the whole core of the book the film was disappointing in that regard (particularly considering saoirse can Deliver) i was waiting for your reaction to the final wanda jdsjjfskjd IN THE CASTING DEPARTMENT'S DEFENSE this was A Cast most of the leads were like actors tipping on the edge of real fame which i think only saoirse really attained but like atm jake abel had done the lightning thief and max irons was like Thee pretty boy of that year on tumblr and well everyone knows emily browning, who i think was stephanie's first pick for bella lol (i was personally IN LOVE bc this was one of the first films where i like Knew everyone in the cast but the reception was mixed)

I read it once, but didn't finished, then a year or more later I borrowed it again from the library and read through the whole novel, and surprisingly I really enjoyed it, mainly the second half till the epilogue, aka start from the part when Uncle Jeb finds "them" till "it's a strange world..." Later on, I managed to watch the movie as well and really enjoyed it too Idk, I feel like the host is definitely much lesser known than Twilight, so for me it felt underated...cause I enjoyed it, and some of the topics and themes it explores are rather unusual/interesting Love Wanda/Mel, sisters forever

I had a very different view of the colonization that occurred in the book. Colonization is a completely natural things organisms do in order to increase their species odds of survival. Conceptually the more spread out that you are, the less chance there is for you all to die out. Humans, unlike other animals, have the empathy necessary to know that colonization is wrong (which obviously doesn't always stop them from doing it). From what I understand in the book, while Wanda was in control of these other species, she was still incapable of feeling empathy. It was not until humans that she had the range of emotions we have that allowed her to realize her species was literally murdering hundreds of millions of other species. The way I think about it is imagine being a dog, then a spider, then a shark, etc. As those animals, you would not have a problem killing off other species in order to colonize. However if all of a sudden you were put into a human, you would gain the understanding that what you are doing is kind of messed up

The concept was great. Its seems to be the repeating theme with Meyer, a feeling of some people around her being not normal in a way, being too wholesome/perfect too be true. Elves when they play the negative (as in Riyria Revelations and An Enchantment of Ravens), Tom Marvolo Riddle, and Vampires in Twilight appear to be a repeating theme. A suggestion (as in a thought) that had come to me in more vague ways for some people in South-East Asia/West. This book has overly wholesome westerners as its focus. Notice how the scar/eyes are subtle, little bit hard to notice signs, they blend in the crowd perfectly well otherwise. I will never forget this book, for it put words to something I had seen/or experienced.

Worst Book to film adaptation was probably Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. Tim Burton just ruined the story for that movie, just took the book and just made it completely different to the movie. The book is more visceral, intense, graphic... Wanderer remembers, through flashbacks, what it was like on different worlds. The planet or system of origin is not mentioned in the book ( or film for that matter) Wanderer is hunted down in the book by both humans and its own kind.. In the book, The seeker doesn't stop pursuing Wanderer ( In the film, it's captured and overcome ( sent back to its own planet) The end of the film is completely different from the end of the book. Wanderer is still being pursued at the end of the book, It tries to escape into the desert, but its new human host is dying from the heat...

I didn't quite get the colonisation message back then and I just loved the *boring* scenes of Mel/Wanda cooking and cleaning and providing and telling stories, especially cause one of the stories was when she was some sort of bug? and like the best bugs would give birth to millions but it killed the mother and apparently everyone was like slay you would be a great mum but Wanda never did it and that's why 'I finally found a reason to die for' was suppose to hit hard? Also I remember at one point Wanda is looking at a park and sees two Hosted parents and a normal human kid and was like awwww,,,, they love the child even tho its not there's... and now looking back on it its a MAJOR side eye moment

Did they write Radioactive for this movie? What a cultural impact if so lol. I remember really liking this book when I read it in high school, but yea, the movie was completely forgettable. Also forgot it was Saoirse! Way to bounce back, girl.

I loved this book as a teenager, just as much as Twilight. Your making me want to do a reread so see if my opinions have changed. I really enjoyed the movie but I do think they could have done better with showing the audience the connection and love that grew between Wanda and Melanie, like you mentioned and there were a few other things they missed out from the book which I didn't like but overall loved the movie and still do. I now find the twilight movies cheesy as an adult compared to when I was a teenager but still love them haha. Also I'm thankful for this movie as it introduced me to one of my favourite bands, Imagine Dragons 😍 love their song radioactive.

Honestly my favourite part of the movie was the credits. I liked what they did with the galaxies and all. Otherwise horrible movie. A movie that always makes my heart bleed is the adaptation of ink heart by Cornelia Funke. The books were great, the movie was just a train wreak that had only vague similarities with the original first book. Thankfully they stopped after one movie.

I didn't think the movie was necessarily bad but it wasn't the greatest either. I can't remember what happens in the book either but I really wished she had released a second in this series instead of Midnight Sun. The Twilight movies will always be better.

I really disagree. I actually really liked this movie and the concept. I liked the acting as well. I think the screenplay maybe is more digestible to me than the book because I do prefer the movie and its pace. I do wish we saw much more of the relationship with wanda and melanie (and jared cuz he's my favorite) more but everything else I like better. I think the movie however is supposed to be metaphors of free- will, control, and actual celestial colonization than it is about this world's history of colonization.

I remember waiting forever for the sequel to this book after reading it like junior high. Back then I quite liked the book but at the age of 27 I feel like now I'd feel very differently. I don't know why but I was so into Ian when reading the book for the first time cause then I didn't see the romance coming and when it happened I was just amazed. But yeah, the book has so many yucky things going on, with the weird fixation to the ages and colonialism that's super yikes. I like the idea of parasites and hosts but somehow the way it was done just wasn't it.

I used to absolutely love the movie (I mean I also never read the book) but I will not rewatch it to save my memory. And at the time I also did not realise anything about colonialism (yes, I was also a middle schooler).

I loved the book, though it's been a while since I actually read it, but The Host movie is just bad. Baaaaaaddddd. Like you said, they left out probably 85% of the character and relationship development, so everybody's just going through the motions pretending their actions make sense, which they might, if, you know, the script had actually included the motivations for what they were doing!! Plus the acting is just bad...it really annoys me that they made it into a movie, lol. Shoulda just let it be a wacky book. Thank you for this opportunity to rant, lol.

Ahh the kissing book/ movie. Also I think you pulled out the concept of colonization from the book, which is understandable. However, the author is Mormon. I see alot of influence from that in the book if you know anything about Mormon beliefs: I used to live in Utah: lotta Mormon friends.

My Twilight phase was me refusing to touch anything related to Twilight which meant no Stephenie Meyers books lol However the most recent worst movie adaptation I've seen has to The Sun is Also a Star. The book was wonderful and incorporated so much of the character's surroundings and that's what made the book great (imo) and the movie just didn't do that so it fell very flat.

Twilight came out in 05. The host came out in 08. She had started the host as another series to write along side twilight. But. But people suck. Two things happened, one twilight took off so much so that she was pressured into finishing that series and to drop the host series. Two that the last book in the twilight series was licked. She didn’t even want to publish it the book. And released the what if book instead. And has no intention of ever finishing host series. I think it would have been better than twilight. Which I hated twilight. It was so bad. Right up there with divergent series as horrible.

I like the concept of the invasive aliens and the fact that the story happens post-colonization when humanity is defeated very badly... I like how the aliens aren't depicted as absolute evil, I actually want to see that world evolve through sequels and prequels. Colonization is a natural part of life, humanity lost the war and so it was only fair that it lost its dominion over the Earth. In nature the weaker, least intelligent or least adapted loses its place, that is just how things are. What I don't like is the romance parts (I never like them, romance just makes me cringe and puts me out of my immersion in the story) , but at least it is a better love story than Twilight. I never read the novel.

I watched that movie years ago. Hated it. But the cast was promising: Saoirse Ronan, Max Irons (son of Jeremy Irons) played Jared, Diane Kruger played the lady villain, William Hurt was too. I was disappointed because I love Andrew Niccol's previous film: In Time with Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried but oh well...I blame the book source material 😁 Radioactive by Imagine Dragons on the end titles might be the only plus 😁. I hated the movie adaptation of the book The Aftermath. It's a historical fiction post WWII set in Germany where a British general occupies the manor of a former Nazi party member. The British dude moves in with his wife and the Nazi and his daughter are put to live in the attic. The general is absent a lot so the wife starts a friendship with the Nazi that develops into a romantic affair. I read the book before watching the movie, I was super excited because Keira Knightley playing the general's wife and Alexander Skarsgard the Nazi. But OMG they had zero chemist and the script removed all the sad parts of the book about living in a post war Germany. Highly disappointing 🙄
