Fun fact: In the books Peeta actually burnt the bread on purpose because he knew that it was the only way his mom would let him throw out the bread. Fully knowing he’d get hit…his parents are kinda shown to be abusive
It wasn't about the heaviness, but about that a bow her dad made for her wasn't shooting exactly straight, typical stuff with most of handmade things, also considering the fact in what condidtions it was made. Capitol's bow was wayy more accurate, almost perfect and she wasn't used to it shooting exactly where she was aiming.
@@Freyka_ Lol!! You’re both right. It was those 2 things mixed with the fact that the capitol bow was made of a more high tech material that she wasn’t used to so she had to get accustomed to the feel. Had they watched her second shot and were smart enough to understand all that they would’ve been extremely impressed. To acclimate after one test shot so perfectly would’ve been impossible but she did it.
every bow is different, even the best of archers need at least one or two practise shots before they get a feel for one they aren't used to. in the books katniss takes two or three shots before she perfects it and shoots perfectly every time after
The three finger hand sign is explained in the book. Its from district 12 and used as a farewell to loved ones. As they are a mining community, the chance of death by a mine a collapse is very high so it is often exchanged between families as the men go to work. 12 uses it as a goodbye to their tributes every year for the hunger games because its a silent way of showing mourning. Once in the games, Katniss is just doing what she knows to do to show she cared for Rue and saying she's sorry for her death. It turns into a symbol of respect for Katniss and rebellion against the capital in 11. It also becomes significant in later books/movies.
The three-fingered gesture is hardly ever used in District 12 anymore. Katniss knows what it means (“admiration/goodbye to someone you love”) but is surprised that it was used when she volunteered to save her sister because she didn’t think that people in District 12 saw her that way. It was never stated in the books that it was used to say goodbye to the miners as they went off to work. Katniss just recalls that it’s very occasionally used/seen at funerals. It later became a salute for the rebels.
Katniss isn't totally faking her interest in Peeta in this movie but she is very conflicted. This is where the book helps some, in the cave she says that second kiss was real. She also says when she is afraid he will die that it's not just about the sponsers or that she doesn't want to be alone rather she doesn't want to lose him, the boy with the bread.
A major reason why a war never happened was because the districts were kept isolated. They never had any contact, or knowledge about the other districts outside of what they saw during the Hunger Games (in the books Katniss also thinks that a conversation she has with Rue where they talk about their districts wouldn’t be shown as the Capitol want the districts to be unaware). The Hunger Games are also used as a tool to further this separation and make the districts each others competition/enemies. Not only because they want their kids to return but also because the winning district gets money and food - which they all need. This literally breeds resentment and hostility towards other districts. Riots do happen from time to time but they’re always isolated and dealt with fairly easily because there is no connection between the districts (or even really amongst the people in a district because of what the Capitol does). Alliances also happen in the games but it’s all a means to an end. Rue and Katniss were different, they were actually friends and cared about each other. The way Katniss honoured Rue after her death was a first and quite shocking considering they came from different districts. This can be seen as in the books, District 11 sends Katniss some bread as a thank you which would’ve taken pretty much the whole district to chip in to buy it and send it (another first). Katniss and Rue’s friendship actively went against all the ideology that the Capitol had been spreading for the past 74 years.
ahhh appreciate you for doing this one! I know 4 movies seem like a lot but the overall story is sooo worth it. The second movie is def the best in my opinion! Happy watching ☺
My favorite is the third which I think is criminally underrated. I remember waiting for these movies though. I was too young for the Harry Potter hype, so this was my generations hyped movies ❤
2 nd and 4 th are the best but the 1st is OG, stands on its own..the only reason why 3 rd is shaky for me is as a stand alone it and is less exciting, it is only the first half of the book so it is setting up for all the good stuff in 4
I'm so excited to see you react to this! I love that you _immediately_ clocked how tortured Haymitch is by his past. Most people just think he's an asshole, which he is, but he's an asshole for good reasons. Also, they couldn't go into such detail for the movie, but Peeta burned the bread on purpose, knowing he'd get a beating for it, so he could give it to Katniss ❤
Not only tortured by his own Hunger Games, but by losing 2 tributes from district 12 every year since. I think that's what he's trying to numb himself from.
If I remember correctly from the books, those “dogs” are essentially made from the dead tributes. She even recognizes one of them, it’s a horrific thought.
The salute is like a symbol of goodbye. The actor of Peeta was on Zathura, Bridge to Terabithia, Journey to the Center of the Earth.... also, he burned the bread on purpose so he could give it to her. PS: Catching Fire (the 2nd movie/book) is most of the fandom's favorite
Right from the start, I love peeta. Unlike gaile who is full of anger and trauma, Peeta said "I need to be me" he wants to die while still being himself. Being gentle and kind. And not letting anger consume him. They have every right to be angry of course. But that is not what Katniss needs. She is traumatized and full of rage. Peeta's gentleness will help her see kidness in this cruel world
lmao I think that just writing the quote from the end of the book would’ve been easier💀 besides this information isn’t even relevant until the last movie
@@ravenlenoirr how is it not relevant? Right from the start obviously there is a love triangle and people fight over team p or team g. These reactions are for fans to enjoy so I am free to share my thoughts about the story 😂
21:38 - The moment I started crying and humming “Safe and Sound (Taylor’s Version)”. And no line has sent a chill through me like DS saying “a little hope is effective - a lot of hope is dangerous”. Some truly scathing social commentary in THG. Suzanne Collins did not come to play.
the 3 finger salute isn’t their version of an applause. they don’t explain it’s meaning in the movies but this is how katniss describes it in the books, “it’s an odd rarely used gesture of our district, occasionally seen at funerals. it means thanks, it means admiration, it means goodbye to someone you love.” also i love how you were so confused on peetas true intentions throughout the movie. since the book is only through katniss’s pov the reader is meant to feel the same way. we never know whether to trust him or not since katniss never really trusts him. i’ve seen a lot of hunger games reactions but yours is by far one of the best
My personal favorite of the films is the second one. Catching Fire is amazing!! No Spoilers : So President Snow is the bad guy and he’s essentially the evil dictator, there is a movie coming out in November about his backstory. You are right about Haymitch being traumatized from the games but Haymitch’s game was a little different. So every 25 years they have a Quarter Quell and they usually change up the games somehow. The first Quarter Quell the districts had to vote who to be in the games and the second one (Haymitch’s gam) It was 2 boys and 2 girls making 48 tributes and similar to Katniss had a friend die in his arms and showed up the capital this led to the murder of his family by President Snow.
Totally wasn't expecting this but I'm so glad you decided to do it! Honestly I never would have thought of recommending this series to you but at the same time I feel like it's right up your alley. The fucking Tom Holland comments killed me lmfao. Josh Hutcherson walked so Tom Holland could run!!
One of my favorite things about the cultural impact of The Hunger Games (books and films) is that when the first book was released, it was marketed as “The Next Harry Potter” in terms of its potential. And then AFTER the books and films had all been released, every single dystopian book/film for the next TEN YEARS tried to market themselves as “The Next Hunger Games” 🤭 the cultural impact of The Hunger Games was huge for young adult fiction and was primarily the reason why there was such popularity for other huge franchises like The Maze Runner and Divergent. And as a young girl that was a teenager when the books/films were coming out, god it was so cool to see a franchise where young women take action and promote change be so incredibly popular. Awesome reaction, hope you enjoy these films!
A lot of people are quick to dismiss Hunger Games as just YA love story stuff, but it is sooooo much more than that. The books are incredible and even more violent and horrific, but these are some of the best book-to-movie adaptations that have come out
YESSSSSS. This film series is everything to me. The politics and themes embedded throughout is so intriguing -so many people only see a "love triangle", but hopefully you can see past that and see what its actually supposed to resemble
You probably would recognize Josh from his child star days. He was in Bridge to Terabitha. Which is why I think casting him as Peeta was so smart cause most ppl remembered him as a child and seeing a “kid” in the games is so jarring but yes I think we all collectively agree that him and Tom holland have the same energy
I feel like Hunger Games is one of those series that people get really heated about when people miss these little details but you're so funny I hope they spare you
I've watched over a dozen people react to this series, and the fact you figured out what was happening in the flashbacks (and be the _only_ person to comment Peeta's mother waling on him), the only one I recall vocalizing the parallel of the Games celebrity media today, and your other deeper observations makes me excited to see the rest of your reactions to this series!
Imagine reading this story as a 13 year old girl. Katniss was the first female protagonist I had ever read that made me realize how young women could change the world.
this film is soo amazing! i just wish they went more into haymitch’s storyline because he has such a sad but interesting backstory i’m so happy you’re watching these films! the second one is definitely mine, and probably the fandom’s favourite! hope u love it
funny you mentioned peter dinklage would kill the role of caesar flickerman because peter dinklage is gonna star in the upcoming Hunger Games prequel A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes! what a coincidence haha and i totally agree, but stanley tucci really made the role his own
I had a poster of Josh Hutcherson in my binder when I was about 12 or 13. I had a big crush on him growing up. Ever since "Little Manhattan", but "Bridge To Terrabithia" and "Journey To The Center Of The Earth" really solidified it 😅
Josh Hutcherson really that one childhood crush that you'll never grow out of. helps that hes just an all around amazing guy gahhh i love him its disgustingly parasocial 💀😫
22:27 there was a war between the districts and the capitol, but the capitol won and oblitirated district 13, the hunger games was then invented to keep the districts under control
there has been some discussion among the fandom that katniss is actually asexual or demisexual. this doesnt negate the fact that she might like peeta or gale romantically tho since ace ppl can still have romantic attraction. "Katniss will pick whoever she thinks she can’t survive without.” is a line from one of the books.
I wish ace people got way more representation in mainstream media, but Katniss isn't really it in my opinion. The books make it clear to me that Katniss is not interested in relationships and having children because of the games. She can't fathom having a child in the world she lives in. This is backed up by the epilogue though I don't want to go into too much detail because the guy reacting hasn't got that far.
That’s a stretch because the book implies that katniss wants to avoid relationships & kids because of the kind of world she’s in. Considering it’s super traumatic and dictating
Major stretch IMO. She is literally in the most traumatic scenario a person can be in, her not thinking of sex has nothing to do with being ace. She has literal PTSD
As to Katniss's missed shot, she hadn't practiced with the bows at the Games, and it had a different pull than she was used to. She had to fire it without knowing how it would respond. Once she did, she was able to make the adjustment pretty quickly. The movies miss it, but Caesar Flickerman was actually a mostly good guy who tried to help the tributes however he could, by making them as memorable as he could and helping them if they got stuck.
Glad you picked this one. I just rewatched these myself after not having seen them since they first came out and I had forgotten a lot of it. I read the books first and so my biggest let-down in this first one is that in the book after Rue dies and District 11 sees Katniss take care of her, they pooled their meger funds and send her a tribute before they rioted. They left that tribute out of the movie. The upside is that the next 3 sequels to finish the story are still on Netflix until the end of the March. And as bad as you think it all can get and the reveals are...it's so much worse. I hope you follow through with them.
"He burned the bread, so he is a bad baker" 😂😂😂😂 that comment had no business making me laugh like that. RU-vid algorithm has been feeding me this franchise's reactions like crazy, so hey! I'm on board here and looking forward for yours. Pd: Obligatory _In the books, Peeta burned the bread on purpose so he could give it to Katniss_
The books are darker than the movies. Katniss is starving and peeta burns the bread on purpose to give to her, knowing his mother will hurt him. When her Dad died in a mine collapse her mum went into a deep depression and Katniss had to look after them both. After she blows up the food she loses hearing in one ear and s given a built in hearing aid at the end. Peeta actually loses the leg that Cato injured and has a prosthetic from then on. They both actually get the berries in their mouths before they call a halt and tell them they won. When younger Katniss sees a boy and a girl running away from a district, the capital shoot the boy through the chest with a harpoon and drag him into a hovercraft. Later Katniss sees the girl in the capital she is a servant/slave who has had her tongue cut out.
Knock off tom holland? Lmfao Josh Huterson has been around looooong before Tom Holland and is a huge part of most of our childhoods from Zathura to Bridge to Terabithia to the hunger games. Don’t know how you don’t recognize him considering he was everywhere when these films came out lmao
Don’t you dare compare josh to Tom! Tom is an off brand Josh Hutcherson 😂 There was war where the districts tried overthrowing the capitol. However the games are a consequence of them loosing the war.
in my opinion, it wasn't rue's death alone that sparked the riot, many kids, even young ones have died in the 73 games before this one. however, because of the capitol and the games, the districts were very segregated and even hated each other. katniss's kindness to rue, giving her a proper burial, and saluting district 11 showed a certain solidarity between the districts and forced them to see that while they've been aiming at each other, the true enemy was and always will be the capitol.
Bev you should have millions of followers because you’re reactions are the best! So funny and you’re so invested in the content! Very happy I found your channel!
Here's some answers to questions you had. (These probably have all been answered a million times lol) If I remember correctly, Peeta burnt the bread on purpose so he could give it to her. Of course that caused him to be beat but he is such a kind soul he did it anyway. When Peeta says "I watched you going home." It's, fortunately, not that weird. It's because he works at the bakery so he was able to see her pass by from there. The reason there has never been a rebellion yet is that communication between the districts is non existent. They (the normal citizens, not anyone working for the capital) know nothing about the other districts so there is no way to plan/strategize a rebellion. At the end of the games, Peeta's leg needs to be amputated and he gets a prosthetic leg. However, they don't include this in the movies which is unfortunate :/ . A lot of times that he is seen as clumsy in the next movies is because, in the book, he isn't used to his new prosthetic leg and he struggles to get proper traction or it gets stuck on things. Let me know if you have any questions! And anyone who read this books let me know if I missed something/got something wrong!
Michael, if you love these movies (which you will, they're top-tier cinema!), you should also read the books! They're just next level with the story and the characters. Also, the second movie is the best one, it is a masterpiece!
The mutts they released towards the end were far more terrifying in the book, if I’m remembering correctly they resembled the fallen tributes and had tags with each of the district numbers of who the mutt was
Also in the book re the animals they released , there was one for every dead tribute and the beasts- I call them hell hounds- had the tributes eyes in them. They were also different sizes-(they mentioned a small one-Rue, a huge one thresh and one with green eyes, Glimmer from District 1. I think. I wish they had done that in the move.
this is one of my favorite movies/series ever i’m so excited for you to see it, the second one especially it’s the best, but all of them are good and jlaw is such an amazing actress
BTW I don't think it was mentioned in the movies, but the books let us know that the youngest kids (who are 12) only enter with one ticket into the bowl, and for each year you get an extra ticket (up to 7 for the 18 year olds) so Prim is even less likely to be picked since she was just one ticket.
7 if you’re 18 is lucky tbh, Gale had his name in the bowl like 42 times in the one year because they put your name in more for getting tesserae and I think Katniss name was in 20 times for the same reason.
i remember when i read the book, i found the fact that the dogs at the end had the faces of the dead tributes incredibly eerie but they didn't use it in the film
Loved this video! so entertaining, you and I watch movies the same way lmao, I kept being like "right???" with you. hope to see you react to the rest o the series too!!
27:54 Rewatch this scene carefully. You can clearly see Peeta is signalling her to shoot the guy in the hand by tapping his finger exactly where she eventually shot..
If you really wanna see Jennifer Lawrence act her face off, I recommend Winter’s Bone. I dunno how it would do on the channel as it’s a slow paced meditation on poverty in Appalachia, but she is just fantastic in it. Maybe it’s just one for your own enjoyment.
