The fact "The Lorax" book by Dr. Seuss and this TV show adaption came out 50 years ago, being based off the industrial movement then and still applies now is its own horror in a way. Those 50 years only made factory production and large-scale habitat loss over urbanization more ubiquitous.
When I taught kindergarten in Korea a few years ago, I always made it a point to show my students THIS version of the Lorax when we had our environment lesson. They couldn't understand all the words, but they could understand the images they saw, and that's the absolute beauty of this short. I still get chills up my spine when I listen to the Once-ler give that final speech about caring. So glad you enjoyed this!
In the Seuss-themed area of Universal Studios/Islands of Adventure parks, the themed recycle bins have a picture of the Lorax with a sign "UNLESS...you recycle". Funny, yes, but the last speech about a Thought Someone Ought always gives me the chills.
18:07 fun fact: the book was actually banned for this line, because while the lake was in very bad shape when Seuss first wrote it, it had since been cleaned up. They asked him to remove the line, and he republished it without it.
Sooooo glad you're watching this one before the 2012 one. Not gonna tell you what to think, but I think I'm not alone when I say that this one is the better adaptation.
Eddie Albert does the intro (at that time, he was known for starring in Green Acres). This special has aired occasionally on TV, but was always cut in one way or another. It does expand on the original book, giving more attention to the Once-Ler and even having him question his decisions.
I just made it home from work and happily surprised to see this notification. Glad you enjoyed my request. Also Dr. Seuss' real name is Ted Giesel which is listed as one of the producers. The reason you don't see the Onceler's face is to show how anyone can end up like him.
You chose the correct version(the NON CG version.) Some spoilers in case you plan to watch it down the line, but: The Onceler in this one is fully at fault for the destruction of the forest(unlike the CG version, who has his greedy family push him to do it). Second, having him hidden the whole time and showing no more than his arm or eyes means that he could be just about ANYBODY, which I think is a good message Seuss had. In the CG version, they do it for a bit, then in the flashbacks they show him as this hipster dude and it made me so angry.... One of the things thats in this one that isn't in the kids book is the Onceler giving a few reasons for not giving in, like his factory and making his workers lose their jobs, as well as him arguing with himself whether it's right or not. The Oncelers not evil, he just pushed too hard and over harvested, leaving himself with nothing and the forest gone.
I see your points, and yet there are ways that the other movie gets these things right. Stuff like this is never truly a one person's fault. There are almost always other factors at play. Citizens voting with their dollar. And corporate greed nudging and prodding. These are represented in the other movie by the customers and the Once-ler's family. The Once-ler himself represents the company. As such, he is responsible and could have stopped it at any point, but it doesn't make the factors around him blameless. When the people started offering to buy his thneeds, the company (Once-ler) decided to keep going. Same with the rest of the nudging and prodding. It shows that whatever part you are part of, you have and influence in the happenings.
Since this sticks closer to the original book, I feel the message is stronger. Since it is a environmental message, staying direct to it with the dire seriously that it is makes this a good animated short. Plus the music is very catchy yes! Original written songs with rhymes are always fun.
I love The Lorax book and it teaches how important to save the trees without deforestation. You should see the 2012 version and another favorite “FernGully: The Last Rainforest” 🌺 🌲 🌱 🧚♀️
WOW! Eddie Albert was introduced as the narrator I didn't expect the voice of the narrator when I was a kid watching the original Lorax on vhs this is before the 2012 movie version that has Danny devito voicing The lorax Eddie Albert has been nominated an academy award for best supporting actor in the 1953 romantic classic roman Holiday starring Audrey Hepburn and Gregory peck.
It's taken me a long time to fully appreciate The Lorax (having grown up in a conservative household). It's on the nose, but the entire point is a bald-faced cautionary tale. One of my favorite narrative techniques in The Lorax has to be the vagueness or the faceless representations. The Once-ler has no face because he could be any one of us (or any company) responsible for worsening environmental conditions. The thneed is a nonsense item so that it can represent anything in the real world (nuclear power, coal, gas, plastic, etc.). The short ends before knowing how anything ends up; it really hits home with a bittersweet and semi-hopeful feeling. Unless the people who grow up with this message make the decisions necessary to curb the destruction, things will just get worse. The Lorax is complicated and simple at the same time. It wears its message on its sleeve, but it treats its audience with some intelligence by presenting points (If the factory closes, many people will lose their jobs), observations (causes and effects), and developments (new riches reignite greed when the Once-ler hears how thneed stock grows) rather than saying that good and bad are as clear cut as black and white. The Lorax presents this crisis with the nuance it deserves, and I'm relieved that I've grown enough to appreciate it. (Also super happy you watched this version before the.........other film.......which does not treat its audience with the same respects.....)
Well, for one thing, it doesn't try to put aside that the Onceler is fully at fault for the destruction of the forest(unlike the CG version, who has his greedy family push him to do it).Second, having him hidden the whole time and showing no more than his arm or eyes means that he could be just about ANYBODY, which I think is a good message Seuss had.
The first, and probably best, live-action Dr. Seuss film was 'The 5000 Fingers of Dr. T' (1953). It certainly went all-out in portraying Dr. Seuss's whimsical and borderline-insane art style. He actually didn't like the finished product but don't let that stop you from watching! You may even decide that it is… _very_ atomic!
You don't see the Once-ler's face so it's easier to put yourself in his position. Anyone could become a Once-ler. They also ingeniously show the Once-ler debate and ponder with himself, but he always finds a reason to keep moving forward. His argument about not wanting to fire his workers is a good point. The genius of this story is that there is no bad guy. It's more like a story that shows what happens when someone takes too much without thinking their actions through.
This version in better, it is more like the book (apart from the animation which is then made by Dr. Seuss), here he raises more serious things like the Once-ler, he says "If i didn't do them, someone else"
Hello Nick! It's great that you saw The Lorax. It is a short film that teaches you to respect and take better care of nature. I recommend that you see the new version of The Lorax (2012) starring Danny Devito and also that you see the two versions of Horton Hears a Who (the one from 1970 and the one from 2008). Take good care Nick and I look forward to your next reaction.
I haven’t seen this since I was small. There’s another Dr. Seuss cartoon which might interest you. It’s called The Sneeches. It’s about the haves and the have nots.
I requested you to watch the 2012 Lorax movie on Earth day this year! I’m not disappointed, Nick, not at all, but I’m glad you decided to watch this version first. Just make sure you include the fact that a RU-vidr requested the 2012 Lorax in your intro, okay.?
I only remember bits and pieces of watching the original Lorax cartoon, i don't think i've watched since like maybe the early 2010's. i mean i do remember watching it on the internet when i was a teenager.
Pontoffel Pock, Where Are You? is a really great Dr. Seuss short like this and it is absolutely amazing, would love to see you react to that. Love your videos man keep doing what you do.

I remembered watching this in grade school with my classmates long before the 2012 CGI version debuted! Didn’t understand the purpose of the Once-ler because his face was always unseen.
@@Rickettson Only that he is the personification of a person who uses and abuses his power, even if it leads to pollution and deforestation in the process.
@@twist58 hiding his face means that he could be anyone. He’s not evil, he’s a captain of industry who came from nothing. He could be anybody, meaning that any one of us that could become just like him. His lack of identity is a call to the audience to take responsibility for their actions.
Movie Recommendations: Spontaneous The Lovely Bones (I'm warning you now, there's a lot of heavy subject matter in this one, don't watch it unless you're in the right emotional mindset beforehand.) Request: Horton Hears A Who from 1970/2008. It’s another Dr Seuss story about an elephant trying to save a bunch of tiny people on a dust speck, who no one else believes in. 🐘🌸
It’s actually a good idea to watch the better, Seuss-verbatim 70’s animated specials first, so you can get a true perspective on how the 10’s CGI Lorax and Horton have absolutely Richard Q. Dick to do with anything Seuss wrote. Next, you may wish to go on to the classic 70’s animated Cat in the Hat, but if you want to move on from there to 00’s Mike Myers….no one can help you, friend. 😞
I think you should have turned off closed captions, as the RU-vid ones are automated, and misidentify some words. Like "Trufulla Tree" was "Truck our trees". They aren't official captions, just captions automatically generated
This one (1972) was directed by Dr. Seuss himself. The new one is good, but I like it better. The gist of it that was lost was the Once-Ler's face was always hidden which had a lot of significance.
@@stephenholloway6893 they never seem to mention that, which is a shame for Mr. Pratt. There were a number of these around that time... some were excellently done. Of course the Grinch Stole Christmas turned out the most popular. The Sneetches were great, as well as the Butter Battle. A couple like Halloween is Grinch Night and Pontoffel Pock had some really imaginative animation and memorable songs, but just didn't quite get to 'classic' somehow. Though we enjoyed them enough as kids. Not sure if he directed them all. I haven't looked
Pratt only did 3. This Dr Seuss on the Loose and The Cat in the Hat. Studio wise MGM did the first 2 and began The Cat in the Hat. With Chuck Jones and Ben Washam co directed the first 2. DePatie Freleng finished The Cat in the Hat and ended their run during Grinch Grinches The Cat in the Hat. Which Marvel finished. Ralph Bakshi directed Butter Battle Book at his Studio then Hanna Barbera was one of the studios behind the last special Daisy Head Mazyie.
The reason why the once-lers face isn’t shown is because he’s a representation for greed who chould literally be anyone who’s greedy enough. The 1972 once-ler is just a huge representation for all of the different greedy companies.
This is a Amazing Short Movie and this is Dr.Seuss Darkest Work,so Dark and Realistic that the Book was Banned when it was First Published and is Way Better than the Illumination Entertainment Garbage which did the Complete Opposite and Play It Safe,One of the Biggest Examples has to Do with the Deleted Song Biggeringwhich was a Mistake,I Recommend you watch RWBY,Cat in the Hat,Norbit,Hazbin Hotel,Helluva Boss, and the Biggering Song.
@@featherguardian6023 No to the live action nightmare fuel. Let me tell you a story back in 5th grade in 2005 my teacher was going to show the class the Mike Myers Cat in the Hat, but I remember being freaked out by the trailer and asked to go to the library until it was over and she said yes. Later on she came back and got me and the entire class was jealous of me as everyone one of the 20 something students hated it even the teacher and threw it away.
@@jamesmoyner7499 Wow,that's a Believable and Understandable Story,I Feel Sorry for You,the Students, and the Teacher, even a Sibling of Mine Hates it like a Passion,I will admit that the Posters felt Off and Creepy and at First of Watching It Scared the $h1t Out of Me,now you might Hate what I'm About to Say but After Rewatching It Multiple Times and kept my Sanity in Checked I grew to Like It as a Guilty Pleasure.
@Feather Guardian i respect that you see it as a guilty pleasure, but like Doug said in his review: by putting in pop culture references in it they make it more dated, by throwing in adult jokes they make it more kiddish, by modernizing the dialog they show how little they understand the source material.
By the way Bob Holt voiced both leads in the special. He's perhaps best known voice wise as Grape Ape. Holt later voiced The Grinch in The Grinch Grinches the Cat in the Hat.
For Halloween you may like Dr Seuss 'Halloween is Grinch Night'. On a different note. You may like Tiny Toon Adventures: How I spent my Summer Vacation or Tom and Jerry: The Movie (1992)
The beauty and importance of THIS version over the garbage Illumination version can’t be overstated. The sadness of this cartoon’s events and the ambiguous yet optimistic ending are what make the story so relevant and important overall. The Illumination version DOES have all the animals and the Lorax come back, as well as showing the full Once-ler, removing the ambiguity of his identity and completely removing the urgency of the original story’s message.
This movie is so much more thought provoking and deep while being so short… the more modern, longer production in CGi added so much nonsensical fluff and completely removed any sense of audience responsibility. Disgraceful.
Seeing the original and the movie together is a good idea but I do have curiosity if seeing the movie 1st would give you a different opinion. If you do other movies that also have animated shorts maybe e some times you can do the movie and some times the short 1st. Maybe go with random choice or a poll winner? you should also consider this for any thin g lese that is a remake or adaptation
