Randy, another great review! I’ve had the first generation for a few years and wondered if the new model would be better. I’m going to stay with the first gen. Newer isn’t always better. I tell my wife the same thing, “For greater clarity and less sibilance, stick with your vintage husband.”

Randy, I picked up a pair of original RP-600M's last month to replace my Optimus Pro LX5 speakers. I'm very happy you did a head to head comparison of the originals vs. the V2s. Coming from the LX5's the sonic difference is night and day on the plus side. Couple that with a $250 discount over the newer model, the original RP600Ms were a big win for Me! 😊😊

thanks, randy - this comparison couldn't be better timed. i'm updating a room / system and literally have been going back-and-forth on the mk1's or mk2's. was leaning toward mk2's until this video. need to decide soon, but haven't listened to either. now i'm leaning towards mk1's to try them out while still available. the lower cost is also very compelling. again, really appreciate this video. 👍

Thanks Randy, bought a pair of RP8000F's 6 months ago, and was worried as soon as I did Klipsch would intro an updated version. (Knew they had been in production a while). Sure enough the mk2 came out and I was bummed I bought early. Your review alleviates that suckered feeling I had I had traded away a pair of the older RF82 ll , and the RP8000 sound sweeter in the horn and a better presentation. So I'll enjoy the RP8000 and not worry about upgrading.

Dude, love the sincerity of your review! Keep 'em coming! A BIG fan of your channel! P.S. I completely agree with you about the forward bass on the first version, which could be described even as very slight flubbiness - when you don't have a sub and your amp tends to be on the warmer side. For those who don't quite like that, one option is to eq it, or in my case, I simply adjust the crossover so that my subwoofer handles anything under 80 Hz. Then I simply adjust the volume of my sub to taste - which can actually be done for either version of the speakers - but I digress. I think BOTH are excellent speakers for the money and I will never regret buying them. Cheers.

Hey Randy - Thanks for the review. I guess what I have learned over the last several months is that I'm quite far from being an audiophile. I have no skill in being able to plug-in a set of speakers and tell if they are in-phase, out of phase, have dips, peaks or valleys or anything else that is commonly discussed in articles, charts and/or reviews about these Klipsch RP600Ms. I suspect that like myself, this is also true for many others. It may sound small and but I really do appreciate your descriptions especially how you reference points in songs that you enjoy listening to as well as the time you spend talking about what is different from speaker to speaker. That at least in my opinion is very helpful. If you say these are a steal at $400 bucks thats my queue to take your years of experience and knowledge, and trained ear, as a green light. Thanks again.

When I had a lower budget I used the micca RB42s as my stereo channels. When that budget got bigger I bought the 600M OGs and was extremely pleased. My home theater is now exactly the way I like it. Moved the RB42s to the rear channels and got a JBL studio 520c for the center alongside the OG 600Ms for stereo. Sub is the Bic PL200 ii which I believe isn't made anymore was a great value at $300 for a movie first, music second Home Theater.

According to Audio Science Review of the first gen RP600, there was a massive dip in the crossover frequency indicating poor crossover design and integration of the horn-loaded tweeter and woofer. Now that you've mentioned Adele's voice being more forward, it seems that they have finally addressed that issue.

Thanks for this one, as it answers yet again the ever-recurring audiophile question: do I need to upgrade? What I'm hearing is, probably not, which is great for me, because I was debating whether or not to get the new model or the much cheaper original, and I sprung for the latter, figuring I'd reliably experience the Klipsch sound anyway. These are my first Klipsch and first horns, and I'm happy to say you've made me feel even better about my choice. Much appreciated!

The emotiva does a great job of sending just the right ammount of bass to the sub to compliment the SSCS5's....HOWEVER, in my small room the OG 600M's do just fine on the bass, the dont knock paintings off the wall, but they get loud enough to piss off the battle ax

Thank you for a great video! The way I see (hear) it, the original sounds real with all the liveliness and realism of music. The "updated" II version, on the other hand, reminds me of how the Noise Reduction system worked. If you'd recall it, it was simply shaving off all the noise, including the true essence of real sound, making the listening experience boring and flat. After comparing the two, I no longer want to replace the original Klipsch RP-600M. Like what cheapaudioman said: keep the original!

Nice to see Sith Audio sponsors back in action! I would never dream to upgrade my RP600M to the 2nd generation, there are a lot of very 'interesting' speakers in the $700-1,000 range and if/when tired of the 600 I'll go for a totally different sound. At less than $400 the originals are bargain compared to the II. Nice fun video, Mr. Randy!

While I logically don't want to believe in burn-in I can't deny that IRL burn in makes a difference. And a few hours doesn't do it, I find it takes at least 96 hours. Some speakers take more, like Q-Acoustics. (Best way to do this is to play a good mix of music and sweeps and noise, mono at around 70dB. Reverse polarity on one speaker and then face the speakers towards each other at an inch or less apart. They pretty much cancel each other out in terms of volume which means you can leave them running for a week without driving everyone crazy in the house). So if you like the brand new first gen because it's brighter, that actually might mellow out a little over time as the speakers break in.

I’ve had these speakers for over 12yrs. Would you recommend the RB 81 II’s or should I get another set of 600’s for the front or should I stay with the Sony towers altogether? All these will be powered by my Onkyo NR-696 receiver. I would like to upgrade so I can run separate amplifiers but budget is low currently. I appreciate all your feedback and recommendations sir! Ty

I saw your two year old video when you sold the original. I bought the originals big sale when they came out with the new ones. I thought they were ok near field but not good for my room. But I kept them. Took over a year for them to open up. Just recently opened up and I have them aiming straight with a very slight toe in.. for the price they are okay and will be moving them to my gaming room once I get my JBLs The 600m are good for techno and more vocals. Music like Depeche Mode comes in pretty awesome. It took a long time for these speakers to open up and they are still not perfect but for what I paid, I am happy. They will be awesome for my gaming speakers coupled with my surround Axiom speakers QS8s. FTW: I also upgraded my Tidal to master and using through USB with my Rotel A12 MK2. I noticed when Tidal gives me a song in MQA.. always sounds more defined. And using 24 bit@192.

Great video Randy 👍 I do worry that when a 2nd generation of a product is launched, at least a portion of the development goes into looking at ways of reducing production costs vs giving us a better product. It makes sense of course in order to give consumers a new product at a similar pricepoint when all the associated costs are forever increasing. Normally, we won't know or care as long as the said product performs as expected. BUT with audio equipment - especially speakers, we may actually hear the negative implications of this cost-cutting. We may not see it, especially if the perceived visual quality of build and component choice can be boosted during the "upgrade". Food for thought?

Thanks for your honesty and the focus on Subjective opinion. I wonder if your front end might be something to play with, and the selected test tracks changed, to add some depth to the test, based on other comparisons made by other evaluators. Steve Guttenberg prefers the new version specifically because he thought they were clearer and more lively in the mids and vocals,the opposite of your remarks. And it seems you didn't include any Chet Atkins records, so yeah, man. It's a great review, but I would like to hear your opinions after playing something like Chester And Lester by Chet and Les Paul, and maybe Cruising For Bruising by Basia. Great review. Thanks again!

There is a huge hole in the frequency response in the midrange of the 1st version, the 2nd has smoothed it out. I think the magic of the first one is that what is an outright mistake in the version version actually sounds good in a way.
@stevengagnon4777
@stevengagnon4777 7 месяцев назад
Funny thing is Randy really describes the difference exactly what I predicted. They fix the hole in the midrange but from what I understand there is a phase shift...that forward midrange he mentioned. The new woofer has a bigger voice coil ( big is not necessarily better) that's probably why he preferred the older model the punchier base the smaller voice coil has a better controlled magnetic field and the coil also has a tighter controled electromagnetic field. Fix the cross over in the first generation with a little better parts with a little more overlap and keep it fairly simple and you could have a winner.

I've been undecided on which gen for a while. I've listened to many reviews and you are the only reviewer that likes the first gen 600 over the MII. Now I'm going to have to do more research because I can get the 2nd gen 600 for $460 new and that's a very good price.
@somestuffithoughtyoumightl6985
I think it would be good to test at normal vs reference levels. It lower volume, the original 600M has a lot of detail, indeed. At high volume, the original became shrill and even painful in higher frequencies. I ordered the gen II to compare and hope it corrects this issue.
@somestuffithoughtyoumightl6985
We all know the Klipsch signature is brighter and more foreword and the M II is no exception. Definitely less so than the original 600 M. It feels more balanced. Supposedly has an upgraded cap for the tweet. Compared them both to a KEF Q350. 350 was very nice, but sounds muted when compared to the Klipsch. Compressed content is such a mixed bag, often lacking in one area or another and we expect our monitors to sound good zeroed out.

I haven't heard either speaker, but if I did, I may very well agree with your choice. But more air, more detail, being able to hear things buried in the mix, could also indicate a boosted treble. Would be interesting to know whether turning up the bass and treble controls on the new one would sound like the original. Or turning them down on the original will get you an RP600M ii, as well. Two for the price of one.

Hey Randy, just wanted to say you kick ass man. Also, you mentioned Miles Davis in this review and I’m kind of on an old school jazz kick at the moment. So, question: If you were stranded on a deserted island and could only listen to jazz on one speaker, would it be the Klipsch?

Get involved with a guitar building forum and you will quickly discover discussions of clamps as in depth as any topic in home audio. In fact, it can actually cost more for the clamps than materials to build a guitar.

Thank you for this comparison. You mostly compared using music. How would the gen 1's compare as rears in a home theater setting? I currently have rp502s ii as rear side elevations and looking at either of these as the rears mainly for movies. My front speakers are ALL B & W with 704 towers. The current price is $375 vs $563 both good deals

Funny the things one listens for. Dire Straits, Private Investigations. Towards the end I'm listening for a cats meow followed by the tinkling of glass, like a bottle breaking. Very indistinct but it's there. I only have bottom dollar gear, so it could be that with a "good" system, the tinkling sound of glass might be as clear as day. Dunno, never investigated that probability.. But you're right Randy, it's those subtle differences we use to assess the perceived quality of kit... One song I've always had trouble with, and it might just be a peculiarity with my hearing, is Song For Guy, Elton John. At the end he says "Life, isn't ev-ery thi-ing." All I've ever got out of it is "Life, isn't it very fair." Folks I've asked all say the same. It's the former. I can hear the former a bit better because I know what it's supposed to be, but I still hear the latter if I'm not paying attention. Maybe I need to get out more...

Thank you for this video. I have been toiling over which set to buy. Your review helped immensely. They with the klipsch center will complete my transition to a full klipsch 7.1.2 system. My two 12 inch subs, rear surrounds and atmos speakers were klipsch while my center and towers were Polk. I wanted consistency. I will sell off the poles or use them in my gym. No other reviewer gave me the insights you did. I love the music choices you made also Great review

Hey, how about a comparison between the 600M MK 2 and the R-P 160M? The RP-160's are $375 on Crutchfield. I bought them last year at $375 and would like to think that they are still a good deal compared to both versions of 600's.

I modified my original RP-600Ms by replacing the 3.9uF tweeter cap with 10uF. This virtually eliminates the scoop at 1.5 KHz. I also replaced the 9.1 ohm resistor with 13 ohms which lowers the treble by about 2.5 db. I added a switch on the terminal plate to switch between original and modified. This mod is easy and inexpensive. I recently purchased the RP-600Mii, and I like the sound of my modified RP-600Ms better. Punchier bass and more balanced.

@@vladimirerfan7721 I don’t think you need to modify the RP-500M. The scoop at 1.5KHz is not as large as the RP-600M and the treble is not as boosted.

Sounds like the extra med in the second generation is drowning out the treble and bass. I build speakers and design crossovers and just one ohm difference in resistance on the med inductor can easily make that much difference.

Hi. Not clear on your feedback. Erin's both measurements (objective) and sound clip (subjective, objective) shows it has better midrange and smoother response. I believe this is what klipsch upgraded with MII. Whether it is worthy to change is one's decision (i.e eq can be used to fine tune) and I think not necessary if you are not itchy...

Technically, I would consider the RP175M to be the 1st generation of this speaker. The main difference between the 175M and the 600M is that the 175M had a built in plinth. I’m one who doesn’t like hearing cabinet resonances so I’d probably prefer the RP600M Mk2.
